How to Create a Sub-Directory

Question: Can I have a sub-web page under the same domain or do i need a new one?

Answer: You can have as many “sub” directories under a “main” directory on your server as you wish. If you have a script installed on the “root” of your server, you can create a sub-directory for other pages that don’t fit within the script’s framework. Examples of these would be a sales page, a members area, a product download area or a blog.

First, let’s look at the difference between a sub “Web” and a sub “Directory.”

A Sub-Web, better known as a Sub-Domain, is usually a complete website located on the same server as your main domain. In a web browser, the site URL would look like this:

http://subdomain.maindomain.com

OR

http://maindomain.com/subdomain

You can also have “add-on” domains which is a totally different domain name added on to your main domain. The URL address would be like this:

http://newdomain.com

…just as if the domain were on its own server.

You can create a new directory either from your web server control panel’s “File Manager” or by an FTP software program. I use FileZilla for FTP’ing (uploading) files to my server, so I will show you how to do it using FileZilla. Most FTP programs function the same way.

Here’s how to create a new directory using an FTP program:

Open your FTP program and login to your domain’s website server.

RIGHT Click on the TOP folder graphic on the right column of the software (where all of the folders and files are listed) and left click on “Create Directory.”

Enter your new file folder (Directory) name and click “OK.”

That’s it…your new directory has been created.
