When searching for vintage clothing online, it's important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you're looking for something gray, because well, there's gray (the American spelling) and then there's grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines. If you do, yo... While I've always concentrated on vintage clothing from mid-century, I've spied many an interesting earlier piece. The challenge is finding something from the early 1900s that is in wearable condition and in a size large enough to be worn. Just the other day I discovered a lovely woman's jacket with a 21-inch waist! Even my gifted tailor's magical fingers couldn't make that work for me. So you can imagine my glee over today's VPOD. This bobbin lace blouse in cream and black has old-fashioned ... Read Full Story

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Nettie Rosenstein held many distinctions. She was one of the first recipients of the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1938. She was awarded a Coty Award in 1947. And she was known for having some of the highest-priced wholesale clothing in New York City.Back in the 1940s, with price tags ranging from $100 to $500, her clothes may have been out of the reach of most women, but they were well worth the price. Not only were they beautifully constructed out of fabulou... Read Full Story

Juxtaposition is the conscious positioning or arranging of items side by side to highlight their similarities or differences. And Sally Milgrim accomplishes the task beautifully in today's VPOD.As the copy on the website says, "It takes years of collecting to come across a gown this special." And while there's no word if this is one of Sally Milgrim's famous custom designs, there's no doubt that this lady could juxtapose! Her choice of the flecked, lightweight wool for the bodice is certainly ... I once heard a motivational speaker advise that everyone should carry a $100 bill in their wallet. Supposedly every time you open up your wallet and see that crisp benjamin staring at you, you'll be reminded of your abundance. Maybe. What's more likely to happen is you'll be tempted to spend it. And then you'll have to replace it. And then you'll spend it again. And replace it. And well, you get the picture.I'd like to suggest that it's far better to take that original $100 bill and invest it... Read Full Story

You don't need to be a genius to take a quick peek into my closet and determine that I am not a big fan of pink. Or orange. So it's hard for me to explain why I squeal with delight when I see these two colors together. I guess sometimes, what in my book seems like two wrongs can make a right. And lots of folks agree. Jonathan Adler, for instance, who believes there's no better way to banish the blues than with this color combination. Or Alexander Girard and other designers in the 1960s who ma... Read Full Story

Mmmm, luscious, gooey, chewy caramel--what's not to love?! Well, since I completely eliminated corn syrup from my diet years ago, and corn syrup is an ingredient in just about every caramel recipe out there, I don't often get to indulge my sweet tooth. And perhaps that explains why I'm so drawn to luscious caramel shades in fashion.Take today's VPOD for instance. This chic vintage Lilli Ann suit is made from beautiful caramel-colored fabric that was loomed in Paris. Although it's decades old,... Read Full Story

When purchasing vintage clothing, I abide by the theory that you should follow your heart, not your head. You should buy what you love, what makes your heart skip a beat and what gives you that giddy feeling you get when you think you've found "the one." But it is okay to pay a little attention to the voice in your head. Particularly the one that advises you that, though you might not be purchasing this fab little outfit for future investment, it's still nice to know that it's from the first ... Read Full Story

In the early 1980s, the first Color Me Beautiful book became an instant bestseller with its groundbreaking advice for choosing the right makeup and wardrobe colors.
