They can pick and choose their customers and deny coverage to anyone with any sort of pre-existing condition -- even acne. They can get away with dropping your coverage when you get sick. And since 1945 they have been exempt from the antitrust regulations that apply to nearly every other industry, rules that protect consumers from anti-competitive business practices like price-fixing. President Bush has signed into law an annual defense authorization bill that includes reforms of the National Guard that were engineered by Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Kit Bond (R-Mo.). The Leahy-Bond National Guard Empowerment reforms, drawn from a bill Leahy and Bond introduced, will give the Guard more bureaucratic muscle at the Pentagon in decision making about the Guard's missions, equipment and staffing, according to a statement from Leahy's office.
