Titian's 'Diana And Callisto' Masterpiece Goes On Display At The National Gallery

John Leighton, Director General for the National Galleries Scotland (R), and Dr Nicholas Penny, Director of the National Gallery London, stand beside 'Diana And Callisto' (circa 1556-59) oil painting by Venetian artist Titian as it goes on display for the first time at the National Gallery on March 1, 2012 in London, England. The acquisition by the National Gallery of the masterpiece for GBP £45 million from the Duke of Sutherland, GBP £ 5million below it's market value, means that the painting (from a series of six large-scale paintings for King Philip II of Spain, inspired by Roman poet Ovid) can go on public display for the first time alongside its companion painting 'Diana And Actaeon' (not pictured) at both the National Gallery in London and in Edinburgh.
