First Oxyfuel "Clean Coal" Power Plant Opens In Germany
(From L to R) Swedish Research Minister Lars Leijonborg, Vattenfall CEO Lars Josefsson, Brandenburg State Governor Matthias Platzeck and Vattenfall Europe head Tuomo Hatakka press a button to symbolically begin production at a CO2-free power plant at Schwarze Pumpe on September 9, 2008 in Spremberg, Germany. The pilot project, which includes a liginte coal-powered 30 MW generator, liquifies the generated CO2, which is then transported to an undergorund storage site where the CO2 is pumped deep into the ground. Vattenfall is hailing the project as a milestone in environmentally-friendly energy production, though critics charge the technology is not feasible on a large scale.
