Flood Hits Eastern Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (C), accompanied by Brandenburg state governor Matthias Platzeck (L) and Frankfurt (Oder) mayor Martin Wilke (R), tours a flood wall erected next to the swollen Oder river on May 29, 2010 in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. The Oder has reached its zenith and dykes along its banks have held, so far calming fears of massive flooding for the region. Local authorities are keeping a careful watch on the 60km stretch of dykes that could still soften and break in coming days. The Oder is swollen from tributaries in neighboring Poland, where heavy floods have caused at least 15 deaths.
