Lead candidates Hannelore Kraft of the German Social Democrats (SPD) and Sylvia Loehrmann of the German Greens Party (Buendnis 90/Die Guenen, R), talk during a television interview following state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 14, 2017 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The election today, the third German state election this year, is being seen by analysts as an important indicator of the viability of SPD leader Martin Schulz, who will run against Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Christian Democrat (CDU), in federal elections in September. The CDU won the previous two state elections in Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein, despite an initial upsurge in support for Schulz after he announced he would run for chancellor in January.
