Islamists Mark Anniversary Of Red Mosque Siege
Women mourn on the anniversary of last year's military siege of the Red Mosque July 4, 2008 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The eight-day standoff began July 3, 2007 between security forces outside the mosque and armed militants inside the compound, which included a girls' seminary known as Jamia Hafsa. The storming of the mosque came after its leaders and students led a months-long anti-vice campaign in the capital that included the kidnapping of alleged prostitutes. The government said that 102 people died in the military operation, although opponents say thousands of people, mostly Islamic students, were killed.
