Sir Ian McKellen Visits Shakespears First Playhouse Site
A fragment of 16th century pottery found on a site uncovered by the Museum of London, believed to be London first purpose-built playhouse, on March 19, 2009 in London, England. The location of this first purpose built playhouse, called The Theatre, constructed in 1576 by James Burbage, has been confirmed by Museum of London Archaeology following investigation of the site, a disused warehouse, in Shoreditch east London. Shakespeare wrote and performed at The Theatre between 1594-7 and it is thought that Romeo and Juliet was premiered there.
