Islamist leader Sven Lau gestures as he arrives at the Oberlandgericht Duesseldorf courthouse on the first day of his trial on September 6, 2016 in Duesseldorf, Germany. Lau, a German convert to Islam who has become one of the country's most fiery and radical proponents of a strictly Islamist society, is accused of having facilitated the funding and recruiting of an Islamic State-linked fighting group in Syria called JAMWA. Lau organized the "Sharia police," Islamists who briefly patrolled the streets in cities including Wuppertal, Cologne and Duesseldorf and admonished Muslim women to wear headscarves and stay at home and Muslim men to shun alcohol.
