Judge: Gangs more deadly than some Gitmo detainees

From:  ap.org
A veteran judge says domestic street gangs are more deadly than some detainees at Guantanamo Bay facing trial in U.S. courts. Judge Royce Lamberth, the chief judge at federal court in Washington, was speaking at an American Bar Association breakfast about Attorney General Eric Holder's recent decision to put the reputed Sept. 11 mastermind and four accused henchmen on trial in New York federal court. Lamberth didn't refer specifically to those five in his comments, but said some gangs "are... Read Full Story

Gitmo detainees not free in US after prison

From:  ap.org
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says Guantanamo Bay detainees brought into this country for trial will not be in the U.S. to stay. Napolitano says a detainee tried in this country would be treated for immigration purposes as though he is at a U.S. border trying to get in — and he won't get in whether he's convicted, acquitted or completed a prison sentence. Her comments came in a letter obtained by The Associated Press. She said that if a detainee cannot be returned to his... Read Full Story

The far left turns against the senate version of healthcare reform

In an effort to win one senate vote– Joe Lieberman’s– in order to pass the  healthcare reform bill, the senate has alienated many on the far left. Harry Reid gave Joe Lieberman the concession that he sought by dropping both the public option and the Medicare buy-in for people 55 or older. While this has successfully won Joe Lieberman’s vote, it may have actually hurt the chances of the senate passing this bill. Those on the  far left  are now opposed to the bill.   As we can see in this... AP sources: Ill prison to get some Gitmo detainees

From:  ap.org
The White House plans to announce Tuesday that a rural Illinois prison will be acquired by the federal government to become the new home for a limited number of Guantanamo Bay detainees. Administration officials as well as Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn will make the official announcement on Tuesday at the White House. Officials at both the White House and in Durbin's office confirmed the news Tuesday night. They said President Barack Obama has directed the government to... Read Full Story

Harry Reid wants the senate to vote on healthcare reform without even seeing the bill

When congress passed the disastrous and failed stimulus bill nobody in the House or Senate had a chance to read the bill before they voted on it. As dumbfounding as it is that a person could vote on a bill without bothering to read what they are voting on, Harry Reid has taken it to another level on the healthcare reform bill.   He is not even allowing senators to SEE the healthcare reform bill that he wants them to debate and vote on. He is not even giving them a chance to read the bill... Read Full Story

White House Shows Its True Colors on Healthcare Reform

After appearing asleep at the wheel during much of the healthcare debates, the White House is now passionately advocating passage of a Senate bill that betrays many of President Obama's campaign promises. The bill, if passed, would force people to purchase health insurance. The bill, however, does not contain measures like the public plan option or a Medicare buy-in that Democrats -- including Obama -- have long advocated as ways of increasing competition and making health insurance... The rift is growing between Democrats on healthcare reform

I know that I shouldn’t allow this to happen, but I am beginning to get optimistic once again that the healthcare reform bill may be in trouble in the senate. The source of my optimism still revolves around the man that let us down with his vote to allow cloture on healthcare reform after he promised that he wouldn’t– Joe Lieberman.   My optimism doesn’t come from Joe Lieberman himself, but rather from the politics that have been in play by Harry Reid to win Joe Lieberman’s vote. Joe... Read Full Story

Treasury extends bailout program to October 2010

From:  reuters.com
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Wednesday moved to extend the government's $700 billion bailout fund into October 2010 and pledged to deploy no more than $550 billion of it. Geithner, in letters to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said the extension of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) until Oct 3, 2010, would allow the Obama administration to use bailout funds to fight home foreclosures and boost small business lending... Salon's Glenn Greenwald Says: Blame Obama, Rather Than Lieberman

Glenn Greenwald and I agree on political issues more often than not. His latest article does not change this. Greenwald's most recent column seeks to debunk a narrative that portrays President Obama as the liberal "victim" of "centrist" Democrats in Congress who refuse to endorse more progressive healthcare reform measures, like the public plan. Greenwald argues that the proposed "compromise" legislation actually reflects the position the White House has always held on the subject of reform... Read Full Story
