Today as I was driving home I noticed a truck with that punk rock star! I thought to myself, what the fuck? One of the great problems with punk rock is that it's fractured and a lot of the assholes tend to fit themselves in one of many subcategories (screamo, emo, fucko...). And yet a lot of them usually pride themselves in falling under that star. Whether people like it or not, punk rock is rock n' roll. The primary difference of punk rock is in its no bullshit, to the point, music and singing - no fillers. Yet as far as I know ... Read Full Story

On This Date in 1979: The Damned released their amazing third album, Machine Gun Etiquette , which included the singles “Love Song,” “I Just Can’t Be Happy Today” and “Smash It Up (Part II).” Machine Gun Etiquette was the London band’s first album without founding guitarist Brian James . Captain Sensible moved from bass to guitar and Algy Ward (ex- The Saints ) joined The Damned as their new bassist. I actually saw The Damned on this tour in 1979, at the infamous Cuckoo’s Nest in Costa Mesa, California, and hung out with Damned drummer Rat Scabies for most of the evening. Machine Gun ... Hilly Kristal, the man who owned and operated CBGB’s in New York until it closed last year, has died from lung cancer. Although CBGB’s was opened to showcase Country Bluegrass and Blues bands, it really was the home to punk. Blondie, The Talking Heads and The Ramones all got their start there. Ouch. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of interviewing drummer Eric Green from old school punk band, Riverboat Gamblers . Their current CD, Underneath the Owl , is an exciting throw back to awesome punk bands like Social Distortion and The Adolescents , and it’s definitely one of my favorite albums of 2009. Last night I got some sad news about his talented and fun band: their guitarist, Ian McDougall has been hit by a car and needs our help and support. Here is the email I received last night from the band’s representative: “On the night of Saturday October 17th, while riding ... Read Full Story

By Jacob Cottingham It seems like Eastern Europe is finally starting to get some respect from Americans. Nico Bellic and the GTA giant made thick accents cool. Gogol Bordello has been able to take his mustachioed gypsy punk to a mainstream audience while smaller acts like Golem and The Sway Machinery are putting a fresh spin on ancient sounds. The Sway Machinery’s Hidden Melodies Revealed: “Anim Zemiros” The Machinery boasts an incredible lineup of musicians who’ve played with Arcade Fire , the Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Tom Waits and the Wu Tang . “People ask all the time what kind of music do you ... Words by Barbie Brady, Photos by Fever Dragon You may think to be truly punk rock you have to hail from London or New York? But you might be surprised if I told you that Oslo Norway was were it’s actually happening! Turbonegro has been living the punk rock drama for the past 20 years. When speaking with Happy Tom this weekend I likened them to the Andy Warhol’s of the punk rock scene. He wasn’t especially impressed with my comparison. He said,”That’s terrible, didn’t he get shot”. But my point, and I did have one, was that Warhol really paid attention to popular ... Read Full Story

A Ramones biopic -- that being a film that sounds inherently cartoonish in the first place -- would be nothing without the band's music and the leeway to find great talent. An independent production based on the book I Slept with Joey Ramone, written by Joey's brother Mickey Leigh and punk chronicler Legs McNeil (to be published this December), has slowly been gaining ground. But now Fox Searchlight is negotiating a buy-in, which could change...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox Searchlight is in talks to produce a biopic about the seminal punk rock band The Ramones. The film, which would be based on the forthcoming memoir I Slept With Joey Ramone by Ramone’s brother Mickey Leigh and punk journalist Legs McNeil, would focus on the origins of the band, [...]

The first time I went to Homebake I had t-shirt issues (as you do) so a friend lent me one of hers. It was black and fitted, with a rather nice design on the front. It was for some band called the Ramones; I hadn't heard of them but my ...
