Two groups of average den owners re-doing each other's carpeting? On paper, it's not all that impressive an idea. As it turns out, however, not only was the show worth a watch (or a binge) but it started the TV home design trend that networks like HGTV now thrive on. So it's not shocking that in our revival-ridden era, TLC is bringing back the series that proved a genre.

"TLC is back into home and property with Nate & Jeremiah By Design, our new show helping distressed homeowners turn disasters into dream homes," said TLC President and general manager Nancy Daniels during the Discovery Communications Upfront presentation on Tuesday. "We are thrilled to expand in this space, and what better way to do that than to bring back Trading Spaces, the series that put property on the map."

TLC

In Trading Spaces, host Paige Davis guided neighbors as they took over each other's home, completely redesigning one room based on what they thought (hoped, guessed, assumed) would fit their neighbor's tastes. With $1,000, 48 hours, and the assistance of professional designers like Vern Yip and Ty Pennington, neighbors went nuts with fixtures, furniture, color, and texture.

The show was all the more interesting toward the end of each episode, when design-loving viewers would sit at the edge of their chic chaise lounges witnessing the neighbors either gasp in happiness or horror at the state of their new rooms.

According to E! Twenty-year-old indie films with cult followings aren't exactly prime sequel territory. So an opportunity to make a film like T2 Trainspotting is rare. Strangely enough, it's a sequel that was seemingly willed into existence by director Danny Boyle and the movie writers who kept asking him about it.

"You have to be careful what you wish for because these things begin with kind of casual chats with journalists," he explains. "You say something and the next time you meet them two years later, they say, 'So any further news on the sequel?' and suddenly you start inventing a bloody story because you just do. And suddenly the thing's real and it'll be along soon. Anyway it wasn't along soon. It took 20 years, but here we are."

We had a chance to sit down with Boyle during a round-table interview in San Francisco, where he attended a screening and Q&A for the film ahead of its wide release. Here's what we learned.

1. Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor had to make up before making the movie.

"We fell out in a very kind of British way without really talking about it. The only time anyone would talk about it was in interviews when the press would mention it. Really what we should have done was what Sickboy and Renton do when they get back together at the beginning of the film, is have a punch-up. That's really what you needed to do was have a good fight with some pool cues and throw a few glasses at each other and et cetera. It was Ewan really funnily enough because he was gracious, really gracious. When Slumdog started to get a bit of attention, he presented one of these pre-Awards Season awards, he agreed to present one in LA, I think it was called the Brittania award. He made this speech and it was really touching, so we built on that together.

"I love him dearly, really. He's a very special person, and you don't see very much of each other because he lives in LA and I live in London. You're just not going to bump into each other that much, which is a shame, but whenever I do bump into him it's great. And it was great to get back together again and work. It felt very natural straight away, almost immediately. We fit together very well as a kind of actor-director combo."

2. The Cast Fell Right Back Into Old Habits

"The chemistry of the combo is something you can't predict even in a repeat of it. It's just there. It's always been there between them. They really do like each other in an interesting way — not in an entirely jovial kind of chummy way — there's bits of stuff going on, but it's in a good way."

3. Boyle Isn't Sorry About Making a Movie That Arguably Glamorizes Heroin.

"You can read [the first film] as a social document about Edinburgh's drug problem, which was huge at the time, and still maintains. I would argue that these kinds of movies are important because our relationship with heroin is an ongoing one. It will come and go, but it will always be there. It always has. No one's found a way of eradicating, partly because we medically depend on it."

"I think that first book is a masterpiece of presenting these characters who are normally marginalized and they're front and center. They're not victims and they're not evil. And they have a sense of humor and a point of view that is outrageously attractive, and that's why people are drawn to it. They dare to say things that people are frightened to say really. Like they say, "We don't take drugs because we're stupid. We take them because we enjoy them or we get something out of them." Which is something you're not allowed to say even now. It's like, "You can't say that, there's an opioid explosion. How dare you say it?" But you go, "Why are all those people taking them? They're not all stupid." Maybe some of them are but most of them aren't. They're taking them because they need them. They get something from them.

"Drugs have always been with us. They will continue to be with us. They're not going to vanish. They're a life-long accompaniment with us really. What was wonderful about the book was he looked at that front and center and absolutely refused to back down or apologize for any of it."

4. Boyle was careful not to make the same movie twice.

"There are some similarities — because I'm not a fool — you want to try and generate some scenes that have the energy and the delight and the repulsiveness you remember from the first film. So Spud throwing up in the sick bag, and them doing the 'No More Catholic' scene in the pub. So that's fine, but also you want the film to be about something that's a bit more painful.

"So they go to Corrour, and they don't make a funny speech about Scotland being shite — and we got criticized for that, and it's like, 'What do you want us to do? Do you want us to do another speech about Scotland being shite?' Or do you want to go there and actually what happens is you get this terrible memory of Tommy and this baby and it just crucifies them because at some point there's a reckoning for that kind of behavior, and it's there when it comes, and they can't cope with it, so they go back to heroin, both of them for the first time in 20 years."

5. And He Wasn't Interested in Making a Straight Adaptation of the Literary Sequel.

Boyle based the first Trainspotting on Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name. When Welsh published a sequel called Porno in 2002, Boyle considered adapting it, but ultimately decided not to. He didn't like the book as much as the original. (He said so himself twice during this roundtable.) And when he and screenwriter John Hodge hashed out some ideas for an adaptation, neither of them got very excited. Ultimately, T2 Trainspotting isn't anything like Porno, so the characters diverge more from their literary counterparts over the course of the story.

"We follow our path and he follows his, and they run in kind of respectful parallel. They don't seem to cross over. I would have thought they would cross over. From my perspective, I would have thought Irvine would have started writing them more like they are in the film, but from his perspective he probably thinks our films should be more like his books. It's very harmonious, but parallel rather than overlapping."

6. Boyle Didn't Mean to Make a Movie About Fatherhood.

"I was surprised — when we finished shooting the film and we saw our first assembly — at the impact of those children. There are multiple different children who are in it constantly. There's children everywhere. They've all got children or they've got imaginary children. These children are disappointed. There's that final scene about Begbie and his father. This fatherhood thing, I was surprised how present it was. I thought it would be more background noise, but it felt very present really, and it's because the film became about male behavior over time. The movement from boyhood to fatherhood or manhood over time, and that's what the film was about."

7. Culture Can Save Your Soul.

"It seems to be obvious to me where we're heading. With the mechanization or robotization of jobs and society, it's culture that should expand. Culture can save almost anyone really. You find you're not alone. You read to know you're not alone. That's the key thing they say, 'Well what is it to read a book?' And it's to know you're not alone. That loneliness, which is a product of the way we organize societies at present, people can become lonely-ized so easily. Culture solves that. You find a space, and that's obviously what we try to do in the film. So I would just read, listen to music, watch movies, soak up culture, and you'll find your heart in that. That's all I can say."

8. Renton's New 'Choose Life' Speech Is Steeped in Regret

"His updated speech, the 'Choose Life' speech, the final third of it, you realize it's not like the first speech, which is a litany of sneering at the choices available to him. It's actually a confession about how desperate he is, that he's disappointed that his choices, what he's done, hasn't worked, and that he needs help."

[SPOILERS]

"Then he ends up sleeping with the girl right after it because she's impressed with his speech, and who wouldn't be? Yeah, let that sink in for a second.

The New Zealand Herald reports that Adele told the audience during Sunday night's performance in Auckland, New Zealand that "touring isn’t something I’m good at" and that “applause makes me feel a bit vulnerable. The concert was Adele's last before she officially wraps her tour in London in June.

Though the idea of never seeing Adele on tour again stirs up all sorts of emotions, we kind of don't blame her. When will you catch a break, girl?

While Regina didn’t end up with any version of Robin, someone else sure did. For some reason, Once Upon a Time has decided to jerk Regina around because apparently that’s better than giving her a happy ending.

After the Evil Queen and Regina faced off in a rather random sword-fighting match, the two eventually reached an emotional truce that swiftly ended the Evil Queen’s season-long narrative arc. Thanks to her reformed faith, Regina has learned to find the good in even the most evil versions of herself. So, of course, Regina stepped up and became the hero she was always meant to be when she combined the light from her heart with the darkness in the Evil Queen’s heart.

Damn, Regina. Why are you so darn incredible? This woman has gone to hell and back, but she’ll always be paying for her past sins while even the Evil freakin’ Queen gets a happy ending.

tumblr

In last night’s episode, Henry’s power as the Author came to good use when he was able to give the Evil Queen a fresh start. He sent her back to the famed tavern where she first saw the lion-tattooed Robin, except it was in the Wish Realm this time.

How is this fair when Regina is the one who put in all the hard work to become a better person? She lost both lovers (Daniel and Robin) and then had to watch the Evil Queen of all people swoop in to reclaim the happy ending that she has been searching for her whole life. Sure, in a way, a part of Regina is finally happy now, but that’s just not good enough at this point. This woman deserves so much more than what she is given on Once Upon a Time.

Belle seems to always run back to Rumple, even though he is a power-hungry monster with a knack for destroying everyone’s lives. Hook murdered David’s father, but we all know he’s going to become Mr. Emma Swan really soon. Apparently, Emma and Hook can survive the worst of fates, but poor Regina can never catch a break.

If Regina’s happy ending is not supposed to come from a romantic relationship, then there needs to be less emphasis on her love life and more on her personal development and ever-growing bond with Henry. Those plot points are definitely intriguing enough, and it would be nice to not have to watch her suffer through yet another doomed romance.

Here's to hoping that Regina will find her peace of mind soon because she certainly deserves it.

Mon, 27 Mar 2017 11:24:21 -0700 http://www.zimbio.com/Lana+Parrilla/articles/pNJE5wkPhql/Once+Upon+Time+Happy+Ending+Major+Letdown pNJE5wkPhql Mindy Kaling and Sen. Indeed, many come for that experience. In Los Angeles and some other places new 4D theaters have been installed complete with moving seats and mist to give you an "experience" when a car crashes or the rain starts. Movies are full-on sensory overload and that's cool, but not all the time.

Sometimes you're just in the mood to relax and not worry about the volume button. Sometimes, you want a movie to be like a massage, transportive and relaxing. Well, look no further. I've culled the depths of Netflix to bring you five relaxing movies that are all very different. And, make no mistake, relaxing isn't synonymous with boring. These movies are simply dialogue-driven. You won't find car chases or annoying swagger here. Think of these movies as the exact opposites of flicks like The Fast and the Furious or The Avengers.

1. Spotlight (2015)

Starring: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Billy Crudup

The 2015 Best Picture Oscar winner is a serious film about a very serious true subject, but it's so methodical and smart you'll be riveted. Following the Boston Globe's "Spotlight" investigative team as they uncover a massive sexual abuse scandal within the local (and revered) archdiocese, Spotlight doesn't spend time on the horrible details of the crimes like most movies of this ilk. Instead, it's a procedural about how a story comes about and is executed by trained professionals. Now, with Trump in the White House, the media is more scrutinized than ever. Watch this movie and see how real reporters work.

Open Road Films

2. Midnight in Paris (2011)

Starring: Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Tom Hiddleston, Kathy Bates, Corey Stoll, Michael Sheen, Allison Pill, Adrien Brody

Woody Allen's intellectual romance is a must-see for English majors and any fan of the arts and literature. The Capra-esque story is about an American, Gil, traveling in Paris with a fiancee he doesn't truly love. On a walk late one night, he finds himself magically transported to his dream era—the '20s, where he meets dozens of his heroes. Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda, Salvador Dali, Luis Bunuel, Cole Porter, Gertrude Stein, and Pablo Picasso all make appearances. Written and directed by Favreau, he also stars as Carl Casper, a disgraced head chef who remakes his life from scratch. He quits his restaurant job and buys an old truck. Quickly, he, his son, and best friend make it over and head off on a road trip to bring great food to the people. It's an easy-to-watch success story with a big all-star cast that most anyone should enjoy. Only the Lonely (1991)

Starring: John Candy, Ally Sheedy, Maureen O'Hara, Jim Belushi, Anthony Quinn, Kevin Dunn, Macauley Culkin, Kieran Culkin,

I love the late, great John Candy and often relax with his movies. My favorites, Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, aren't available to stream at the moment but there's a lesser-seen Candy movie on Netflix I think you'll enjoy. Only the Lonely stars Candy as Danny Muldoon, a Chicago cop who still lives with his overbearing mother. She's a nightmare, fully racist, judgmental, and perfectly happy to keep her son to herself forever. So, when he falls for an Italian girl, Danny has to keep her secret until he's ready to break the news to Mom. This is a sweet, funny movie with tons of parental issues and family themes we all recognize.

Fox

5. The Beaver (2009)

Starring: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Jennifer Lawrence, Anton Yelchin

Yeah, on the surface it has a silly title and premise, but this is a strange, worthy movie starring some very talented actors. It starts out serious, as Walter Black (Gibson) is depressed with his toy company going bankrupt and marriage failing. He moves into a hotel and attempts suicide but isn't successful. Stuck in life, he decides to communicate with people using a beaver hand puppet, something he tells his wife is part of a therapy program. Walter reconnects with his youngest son thanks to the beaver and his wife can't help but empathize. But his elder boy (Yelchin) still won't accept him and Walter runs into other problems trying to win him over. After making it to the Final 4 for four years, Swan Queen had a major breakthrough moment this year and made it all the way to the Championship Round.

The dynamic, magical duo even received some love on Twitter from Once Upon a Time co-creator Adam Horowitz and the ever so popular Evil Queen/Regina Mills, Lana Parrilla. The shout outs are a result of the undying passion and dedication of the Swan Queen fandom. Even though their ride-or-die couple is not canon, they believe that someday Emma and Regina might be. After all, these two always find each other, especially during tough times.

http://ouat-art.tumblr.com/post/130942531569/thececilz-swan-mills-family-requested-by

So what makes this supernatural duo so darn incredible? Well, apart from their unparalleled magical abilities, Emma and Regina have one of the most complex and well-developed relationships on the show. They started off as enemies and then found common ground based on their unconditional love for their son, Henry. Over time, they went from being cordial acquaintances to friends and allies to BFFs. It's unclear what the future holds for them, but one thing's for sure: Their bond will only get stronger.

Just like Emma and Regina always believe in each other, the Swan Queen fandom believes in their ship whole-heartedly. In fact, they showed up in top form to support their OTP during the ABCs of Swan Queen and also submitted beautiful fan art for this year's competition.

We want to congratulate Swan Queen shippers for coming so far. You never gave up, even when the match-ups were tough and it seemed like the tide was turning against you. You embody what Once Upon a Time is all about: Holding onto hope. So here's to a charming future for Emma and Regina! We hope to bring you yet another magical celebration next year.
Fri, 24 Mar 2017 10:31:03 -0700 http://www.zimbio.com/2017+TV+Couples+March+Madness+Challenge/articles/b8wTleiaA7L/Emma+Regina+Runners+Up+Zimbio+2017+March+Madness b8wTleiaA7L Clarke and Lexa Win Zimbio's 2017 TV Couples March Madness Challenge

Art for Zimbio by Rafael Hidalgo

After an incredible 3.7 million votes were cast in Zimbio's 2017 TV Couples March Madness Challenge, The 100's Clarke and Lexa snagged the coveted crown for a second, consecutive win. Clearly, this victory is no small feat, especially given the fact that the character of Lexa passed away over a year ago. But the warrior queen has lived on in the hearts of her fans, who have spent the year since her death advocating for LGBTQ causes and doing their best to bury the "bury your gays" trope once and for all.

For Clexa fans, Lexa's death was an inexcusable letdown, and it became much larger than what the show had intended. It's cultural impact started an in-depth discussion about improving the visibility of LGBTQ characters and understanding the impact they have on their fans. The Clexakru took their frustrations about the insensitive way The 100 handled Lexa’s death, which occurred just moments after she slept with Clarke for the first time, and worked to turn those frustrations into action.

https://wan-heda212.tumblr.com/post/154475214295/sheep-in-clouds-never-forget-the-two-commanders

Rather than waiting for someone else to make things better, Clexa fans rose up and decided to create the change they wished to see in Hollywood. They raised money for The Trevor Project, and they launched the first annual ClexaCon. Named after Clarke and Lexa, this media and entertainment convention aims to provide a platform for fans, allies, and content creators from around the globe so that they can disseminate positive content about the LGBTQ community.

Lexa may have died on the show, but her memory will live on thanks to her loyal fans. We want to congratulate the Clexa fandom for repping their OTP to the best of their abilities. You guys came out in full force and this victory is a result of your unyielding support of Clexa. Your Commander would be proud, so keep fighting the good fight.

We also want to thank everyone else who participated in this year's challenge. You represented your ride-or-die couples with fervor and emphasized all the great things about being in a fandom. We look forward to bringing you another epic celebration next year.

May we meet again.
Fri, 24 Mar 2017 10:18:59 -0700 http://www.zimbio.com/2017+TV+Couples+March+Madness+Challenge/articles/9y45p9lwbWW/Clarke+Lexa+Win+Zimbio+2017+TV+Couples+March 9y45p9lwbWW 5 TV Shows You Can't Wait to Use Netflix's New 'Skip Intro' Button On

Netflix

Strangely, the roll out of Netflix's semi-new and much appreciated "Skip Intro" button came with little fanfare. Reddit noticed first, as usual, and this week, major websites have been posting articles about the feature, seen below at the bottom right:

NBC

One would think Netflix would advertise this more. If they were smart enough to do it, you'd think they'd be smart enough to tell us about it. The button obviously came as a result of subscriber griping. No one wants to binge The Office and sit through that garden variety opening credit sequence every 22 minutes. Maybe Netflix is just testing it out for now.

There is a caveat to the new button. It only works for certain shows. Programs that begin and then cut to the credit sequence after a few minutes don't always feature the new button (most don't). And some shows don't feature it at all, no matter when the opening credits roll. That means horrible intros like the ones on Star Trek: Enterprise and Shameless must still be tolerated. Thankfully, the button can still be found on enough shows to be considered useful.

There are a few things to take into consideration when it comes to how annoying an opening credit intro is. First is how re-watchable it is. If you binge-watch the show, this is crucial. You'll have to endure the credits like enduring commercials, over and over. Next is how long the credits are. And, lastly, is how necessary the credits are.

So which shows should we be excited to use the button on? Here we go:

The Killing

It's not long, just totally unnecessary. Linden drives her car around Seattle and we get it, it's gloomy. Plus, opening credit sequences are the worst on serialized murder mystery shows like this where you can't wait to see what happens next.

House of Cards

At almost two minutes, the House of Cards opening credit sequence is the longest on this list. It's dark and the music is harmless so the annoying factor is low, but the length... Just get to the show, please.

Orange is the New Black

Another Netflix Original Series, Orange is the New Black has a highly annoying opening credit sequence that features Regina Spektor's "You've Got Time." The song is okay, but not 10 times in a row and not paired with an onslaught of too-close faces. Awkward.

The Office

The most unnecessary intro on the list, The Office's opening credits are hard to tolerate because they're so uninspired and they occur every 22 minutes while binge-watching. Parks and Recreation has the same problem.

Gilmore Girls

Corny and long, the Gilmore Girls opening tests your limits every time. It looks and sounds like every single melodramatic dramatic soap opera primetime show ever created. They all have Family Ties to thank.

Thu, 23 Mar 2017 13:05:20 -0700 http://www.zimbio.com/All+Things+Netflix/articles/9KeiS7cL0pB/5+TV+Shows+Can+t+Wait+Use+Netflix+New+Skip 9KeiS7cL0pB Livingly Media Names Erica Carter as CEO
Livingly Media, the San Francisco-based women’s lifestyle digital publisher, today announced that its Board of Directors has named Erica Carter as Chief Executive Officer and appointed her to its Board, effective April 14, 2017.
