American suspect in India blasts escapes By Jawed NaqviNEW DELHI, Aug 19: There was growing anger on Tuesday over the mysterious way in which an American visitor, whose laptop computer has been linked to the recent blasts in Ahmedabad, was allowed to leave the country before he could be questioned. Police have rounded up mainly Muslim suspects.

Newspapers said Kenneth Haywood left with his family from Mumbai airport for home hours after Indian sleuths probing the blasts said they needed to investigate him.

Communalism Combat, a liberal magazine, condemned what it said was “the laxity shown by central intelligence agencies for US national Kenneth Haywood for leaving the country when the Maharashtra ATS (Anti Terrorist Squad) had served a lockout notice against him and he was still under investigation.”

The magazine’s editor Teesta Setalvad said the sudden departure of Mr Haywood while investigations are still on into the Ahmedabad bombings raises suspicions. “Immigration at airports comes under the Central IB and the police official in charge of immigration is on deputation to IB. It turns out that Haywood was allowed to leave on his own passport.”

Both the Central IB and Maharashtra need to answer concerns of the Indian public, Ms Setalvad said.

Ahmedabad blasts: flees from India

The American multinational company official Ken Haywood, whose computer was used in Navi Mumbai to send a terror e-mail minutes before the Ahmedabad blasts has fled from India.

According to Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and other investigative agencies US national Ken Haywood slipped out of the country from the New Delhi International Airport on Sunday.

Highly placed ATS sources have told TIMES NOW that Haywood managed to slip out of the country despite a lookout notice out against him. Haywood was administered a Polygraph test, and he is believed to have cleared it before fleeing the country.

A threatening e-mail sent by an alleged terror group prior to the Ahmedabad serial blasts was traced to Haywood's computer's Internet Protocol (IP) address. Haywood was living in Sanpada area of Navi Mumbai and his residence was raided by ATS officials on July 27.

Crime branch officials said two key members of SIMI who were part of the core group which executed the blasts are still at large. Police is also trying to track 50 small-time operatives who were involved in executing the blasts in Ahmedabad and planting live bombs in Surat.

"Our job is not over yet," said crime branch sources. "We are in search of two other main culprits who were involved in the blasts. They are Taufiq Bilal, a Mumbai-based techie, and Qayamuddin, a Vadodara resident."

Bilal, described by Joint Commissioner of Police Ashish Bhatia as another mastermind in the serial blasts case, is believed to have assembled the bombs four day before the blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26, police said adding that he had left the state before explosions.

Police also suspect his involvement in hacking the computer of US resident Ken Haywood from whose Internet Protocol (IP) address the threatening e-mails, claiming responsibility of the blasts by Indian Mujahideen, were sent to television channels.

Qayamuddin managed the logistics and was also involved in procurement of material used in the explosives, police said. "He had made a base in Ahmedabad and stayed there for about two months."

Qayamuddin is considered very close to SIMI group chief Safdar Nagori. Police believes that Qayamuddin and Abu Bashir guided those who planted the explosives in Ahmedabad.

"We have kept a watch at several places to track these two people," crime branch officials said.

In Bharuch, three persons were arrested on Monday for renting a house to SIMI activist Sajid Mansuri, another accused of playing a key role in the Ahmedabad blasts.

The Gujarat Police stated that Mufti Abul Bashir, the mastermind of the Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts, has been arrested from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Based on information, the police have also arrested ten more people for the blasts.

At least 56 people were killed in the 21 blasts that hit Ahmedabad on July 26. The police have also claimed to uncover a network of SIMI activists involved in the blasts.

The police also said that they have got valuable information about other blasts and leads to the email through which the blast warning was sent. Two of the arrested have connections with Lashkar-e-Toiba.

According to the police, the suspects held several meetings in Vadodara and Ahmedabad before the blasts. A meeting was also held at the residence of SIMI activist Yunus in Ahmedabad. The explosives, which were assembled in Ahmedabad, were procured from outside the city.

Ahmedabad, A court here on Sunday granted the police 14-day custody of the nine accused arrested in connection with the Ahmedabad serial blasts case.

The nine activists of the banned SIMI were produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate under tight security, along with Mufti Abu Bashir, the alleged mastermind in the Ahmedabad serial blasts.

Bashir was brought from Uttar Pradesh on a three-day transit remand after being arrested there by Gujarat and UP police teams yesterday.

The police will now interrogate the accused to unravel the conspiracy behind the July 26 blasts in Ahmedabad, which claimed 55 lives, and the planting of bombs in Surat.

Gujarat police had yesterday claimed that they have cracked the blasts case with the arrest of Bashir and the nine others belonging to the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Three detained in Jaipur

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan police have detained three persons, including two SIMI activists, for questioning in connection with the Jaipur explosions in May.

Riaz and Vasim Kabadi from Talabpara area and Abid Bhai Kapdewala from Shoepurian Masjid area were detained by the police in Baran, about 100 kms from Kota, last evening, a police officer said.

All the three have been taken to Jaipur for further investigation, he said.
