DALE EARNHARDT JR.'s FUEL EFFICIENCY

posted by goodcarbadcar
Nascar is about the last place you'd expect to find talk of climate change, green energy, or positive attention paid to eco-habits. But Dale Earnhardt Jr. snapped his 76-race winless streak at the Michigan International Speedway's LifeLock 400 by thinking outside of the box - and even a little bit off the track.
While struggling to even configure methods to take a run at the full slate of laps, Junior made use of the inner-most circle while a caution flag was out. What's more; he even shut off the Chevrolet's engine and coasted, followed by another shutdown and restart.
Smart thinking saves the day. Junior coasted across the finish line without enough gas to even make it to victory lane. With teammates lending a shove, Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the trophy on Father's Day, seven years and four months since his father's death. Check out the final action in the YouTube clip below.

Representing a generation of first-time new car buyers,

Little E’s win: NASCAR’s Loss

posted by michro01

by Steve Kaminski | The Grand Rapids Press

Monday June 16, 2008, 9:30 AM

AP PhotoDale Earnhardt Jr. gets showered during the celebration of his NASCAR Sprint Cup win at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.

BROOKLYN — Dale Earnhardt Jr. spent about 45 minutes in the Michigan International Speedway infield conference room fielding questions from the media after winning Sunday’s LifeLock 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

No one asked Earnhardt, car owner Rick Hendrick or crew chief Tony Eury Jr. a single question about how bad the Car of Tomorrow is.

No one brought up the $225 million lawsuit that was filed by former NASCAR technical inspector Mauricia Gant, who is alleging sexual and racial harassment.

No one mentioned how attendance has been down this year, with Sunday being no exception.

For the first time in a long time, all the talk was about racing.

Earnhardt snapped his 76-race winless streak with Sunday’s victory, and as good as the victory was for the driver of the No. 88 National Guard/AMP Energy Chevy Impala, it was even better for NASCAR, which has been drowning in negative publicity.

Earnhardt’s win knocked all the bad news NASCAR has endured over the past few weeks off the front page, if only for a day. And Earnhardt is the only driver in the field with the power to pull off something like that.

Let me emphasize that I’ve never been a conspiracy theorist. Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The government isn’t covering up the existence of UFOs. Elvis really is dead.

And no, I don’t believe that NASCAR “put in the call” to Earnhardt on Sunday morning — something conspiracy theorists say whenever something happens in NASCAR that appears to good to be true — such as Richard Petty winning his 200th race at Daytona on July 4, 1984, in front of President Ronald Reagan.

There will be almost as many conspiracies about this win as there were when Earnhardt returned to Daytona in July 2001 and put a whipping on the field, five months after his father was killed there.

Earnhardt was bracing for the Fox Mulders to come out of the woodwork soon after his win.

“My fans are happy, and I’m happy for them,” Earnhardt said. “The other half are going to tear this apart on how we won this race, but I got the trophy and I got the points and I got to see my team and my owner and my family tonight happy as they have been in a long time.”

If NASCAR ever needed a win from its perennial most popular driver, it was this weekend, Father’s Day weekend.

It seemed unlikely that Earnhardt would snap his winless streak at Michigan because it has never been one of the more successful tracks for him or his father.

But the two-mile superspeedway was the site of their greatest battle. Earnhardt turned the clock back to 1999 when his father edged him out to win the IROC race at Michigan.

“It burns to this day because I wanted to beat him so bad,” Earnhardt said. “Rusty Wallace pushed him by me. I had him, and he knew it. He was waving at me, telling me to stay there, and I’m like, ‘I have to run my own race.’ I sat there until the last lap, and I sat there like a good son, and I put a helluva move on him, and he never gave me any credit for that because he knew I had (him).

“I was more tired after that race than I ever been in my life. I had to go to the infield care center to get an IV after a 50-lap race because of how hard I worked to win.”

Earnhardt crossed the finish line, took the checkered flag and rolled down the front stretch Sunday. He rounded the pit road exit and headed back toward Victory Lane when he ran out of gas. That’s where his crew members joined him, giving him a push slowly up pit road.

There was no postrace raucous, smoky display. Even the sun had disappeared and rain started to fall.

One of the sport’s most anxiously awaited celebrations was a dud.

But for NASCAR, it just might be the grand turning point in a tumultuous season.

Where is the Outrage?

posted by flatusyahu

citizenbusch, chronicler of La Revolucion (aka The Rowdy Revolution), was stunned to learn today that Richard Childress is allowing a driver to use the most hallowed of hallowed ground in race car driving, the #3 car made famous by Dale Earnhardt, a number which seemingly had been permanently retired. even dale earnhardt, jr. during his free-agency tour last year couldn’t talk Childress into parting with the number.

so who did Childress give up the number for? his eighteen year-old grandson, Austin Dillon, a driver in WRASCAR’s development series.

holy-who-gives-a-fuck-about-preserving-history, batman!

the crooked #3 and black paint scheme had been retired since big e’s fatal crash at the 2001 daytona500. many in the sports world felt that this number would never be used again….at least not by anyone not named earnhardt.

think of it this way: who would want to wear the #23 for the chicago bulls? the #99 in hockey? the snake glasses at the world series of poker? now imagine if michael jordan, wayne gretzky and greg raymer were all dead…..THAT is what this is like. it would be hard enough wearing the number of a LIVING icon, let alone a sainted, tragically deceased icon.

(this is a good moment to pause during this tirade to recognize the passing of spock, the pointy-eared dog. he was a good dog who tolerated shady ownership.)

back to #3. according to the virginia-pilot, dillon, whose father was a racer who now works for Childress, is an up-and-comer and his grandfather simply couldn’t say no to him. that’s pretty fucked up, don’t you think? isn’t that kind of like george steinbrenner saying he can’t say no to his grandkids when they ask if they can use thurmon munson’s uniform for little league?

(we pause again to recognize tony stewart for his nationwide win today…and high-fives to mrs. dupes, friend of the ‘hu and one of smoke’s biggest fans)

getting back to austin dillon…we’re asked to believe that the good news is that dillon, like earnhardt, is extremely aggressive as evidenced by his coaches asking him to tone it down in youth soccer!

peeshaw!!!! we can’t make this stuff up!

read about the whole mess here. write to childress. write to congress. write to somebody. anybody. this has to be stopped.

Kasey Kahne Pockets One Million Dollars

posted by ken77

Kasey Kahne owes a big thank you to the fans of Nascar as he was voted into the All-Star race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and has walked away with the One Millon Dollar first prize by edging out Greg Biffle and carl Edwards to garner the win.

Early in the race though Kyle Busch was dominate and It looked like he might win it all but his car had troubles and he had to retire it from the race. Earnhardt Jr and Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards all had chances, but Kahne’s decision not to pit is what eon him the race and now he is one million dollar richer.
