Nuggets Reject 2-For-1 Trade With Pistons

posted by Cartman

While it is common knowledge that the Denver Nuggets are in trade talks with the Detroit Pistons, a Pistons source has told the Detroit Free Press that any trade that goes down will not involve forward Carmelo Anthony. Any trade that happens between these two teams have these goals in mind: for Denver, it will hopefully bring Chauncey Billups back to his home state; the Pistons, on the other hand, want to correct their messed-up 2003 draft and pry Anthony from the Nuggets.

To add to this trade scenario, ESPN.com reports that the Pistons have offered Tayshaun Prince and Billups to Denver for Anthony; the Nuggets have countered with an offer of Allen Iverson or a package featuring Marcus Camby. But the Pistons are only interested in Anthony at this point. Whether anything comes to fruition is purely speculative at this point; stay tuned to Slam Dunk Central for future developments.

Billups Out Of USA Basketball Equation

posted by Cartman

One less point guard will be considered for the United States Olympic basketball team as according to ESPN, Detroit Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups - due to family issues - will not be a part of the team that will participate in the Olympics in Beijing this summer. Specifically, Billups informed USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo on Tuesday. Billups clarified his decision as he told ESPN, “It’s a matter of what you want to do and what you need to do. Winning a gold medal is the one thing that I haven’t accomplished, and I was looking forward to standing up on that big stage. That’s what I really wanted. But I was taught family comes first, above anything else.”

Billups and fellow Pistons teammate Tayshaun Prince were being considered for the Olympic team, which will be announced on Monday. Billups had stiff competition getting a roster spot at point guard, including Jason Kidd, Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Billups added that his family situation would either distract him in Beijing or force him to return to the States early; he further added that he was confident that he would’ve made the team but didn’t want to take up a roster spot if he couldn’t be fully committed. While all of that may in fact be true, something tells me that the aforementioned 3 point guards (Kidd, Paul and Williams) would’ve made the Olympic squad and they wouldn’t carry 4 point guards.

Billups Will Play Monday Night Despite Balky Hamstring

posted by Cartman

The Associated Press reported Sunday that Detroit Pistons starting point guard Chauncey Billups will play Monday night even though he is suffering from a balky right hamstring. Detroit hosts the Boston Celtics Monday night as they trail 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals. Billups told reporters that he will definitely be on the floor at the start of game four despite the pain. The veteran point guard said “Hurt or not, I still have to play better and fight through it. At this juncture of the season, you can’t sit out. I’m one of the main leaders of the team. We’ve got a young guy, Stuckey, who is playing great and we’ve got to find ways to keep him playing well. But I know I have to play good for us to win.” Billups has only scored in double figures once this series, in game two which the Pistons won.

Miller Leads 76ers To Road Upset Of Pistons 90-86

posted by Cartman

I wonder if the Detroit Pistons got the number of the pickup truck, aka Philadelphia 76ers point guard Andre Miller, that ran them over in Sunday’s game at The Palace of Auburn Hills; Miller’s numbers weren’t Chris Paul-like (Miller scored 20 points), but his intangibles and leadership were there in spades and put to good use as Philadelphia pulled off the upset, 90-86, over Detroit. The win gives Philadelphia a 1-0 advantage over Detroit in their Eastern conference series. Neither team shot very well (Detroit shot 39% while Philadelphia shot only 43.2%) and the stats were similar in a lot of ways.

Philadelphia led by six points early in the game, but Detroit would score the last 11 points of the first quarter and in the process held the Sixers scoreless for 5+ plus minutes; their drought would continue into the second quarter. The Pistons’ Rasheed Wallace made a 3-pointer midway through the second period, which capped a 23-6 Detroit run and gave them an 11-point cushion. Philadelphia came back in the third quarter as they scored the first 8 points of the second half while Detroit would miss its first 6 shots; however, the Pistons would go on an 11-2 run, giving them a 15-point lead.

After the Sixers trailed 62-47, Willie Green made 2 baskets which sparked a 10-0 run; Miller would give the Sixers the lead midway through the fourth quarter. After Detroit’s Chauncey Billups uncharacteristically missed 3 of 4 free throws and a layup with 2 minutes left in the game, he would make a pair of free throws to pull Detroit to within a point with 45 ticks left on the clock. The Pistons would set up a shot for Tayshaun Prince, but the shot was short; after the Sixers’ Andre Iguodala made 1 of 2 free throws with 11 seconds remaining, Detroit’s Wallace missed a shot which would have tied the game at 88. Iguodala would ice the game as he drained 2 free throws with 7 seconds left.

Philadelphia was led by Miller with 20 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal while Willie Green scored 17 with a rebound, 2 assists and a steal; Iguodala added 16 with 9 rebounds and 8 assists - nearly a triple-double. Samuel Dalembert - while scoring only 5 points - grabbed 10 rebounds, had a steal and blocked 4 shots. Detroit was led by Wallace with 24 points, 9 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 7 blocks while Billups scored 14 with 2 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Philadelphia plays at Detroit again on Wednesday.
