::Photo Tip Friday- Your DSLR::

posted by kelsmith1992

This is a guest best brought to you by Rebecca I have been reading her blog for months and she always has the BEST photos.I love her project black, make sure to check that out! Every comment left from now until I get
back will enter you into a drawing for a Mexico prize package! I added
a new hand painted item to the package today. It is seriously gorgeous, he painted it right in front of me so it is custom just for you! Im going to be gone this afternoon and most of tomorrow so I will comment back Friday afternoon or Saturday morning to my last post.

Last August, my husband bought me a digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera. I'd had a film SLR since 2007. But except for the two photography classes I took in college (I was a journalism major) I'd always used the automatic settings.

My husband is a photographer by trade, so I was having NONE of auto settings anymore. From my photography classes, I knew a bit about the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you don't know about these relationships, I urge you to read this article on aperture and shutter speed and this article on ISO before you go any further.

I have taken an OBSCENE number of photos since then (more than 36,000), and a HUGE number of them have been because of me "fiddling" with aperture, shutter speed and ISO. It takes time (reading the articles above is the tip of a large iceberg), but it's SO worth it. Now, I've gotten to the point where I can "eyeball" a scene and, taking into consideration the light, the subject matter, and my "gut," I can get a pretty good idea of where I need to be.

But I know that "jumping in" can be REALLY scary, so here are a few tips to get you started.

Give yourself the time to "play."

For example, if you want to photograph your child's sports event, find sports events your child is NOT involved in to practice your photography. This way you can snap away to your heart's content and not worry about missing the "big" moment.

Put the camera on auto settings, which will give you a "starting place." Then see what you can do by "fiddling" with aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

If you're stubborn like me (ahem) you don't want to use auto at all. I found myself getting into some "rhythms" related to aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If I'm inside, I start on 400 ISO, f/5.6, and 1/10th of a second. (1/10th of a second is the slowest shutter speed I can do hand-held without the photo being blurry.) If I'm outside, I use 100 ISO, f/5.6 and at LEAST 1/125th of a second. If it's really sunny outside, I'll end up using 1/500th of a second or higher. (I've gone as high as 1/2000th of a second.)

This list is by NO MEANS comprehensive. There is MUCH MORE I don't know about photography than I do know. But I hope this helps at least a little.

And have fun! :) In my opinion, it's just not worth it if you're not having fun.

Note From Kelsey- What kind of camera do you have?

Compact Digital Camera Reviews And Tips

posted by tomstateler
By John Q. Harris
The good thing about independent digital camera reviews is that are unbiased. Some digital camera reviews however, confuse potential; buyers because they praise every camera they review.

The only time you should not trust a digital camera review is when it is carried out by the manufacturer themselves. You are not likely to get the whole truth about a camera from the company that makes them are you? I don't doubt if the situation were reversed I would do exactly the same. For obvious reasons you are only going to promote the good points as it is not a good idea to shoot yourself in the foot bringing any bad points to peoples attention.

For the best digital camera reviews then I would suggest you try a specialist magazine or try online. The main reason for this is these reviewers like to tell it to you how it is. Reviewers of this caliber are not swayed by the brand name and will sometimes be harder on the well know manufacturers if they get it wrong. Sometimes the review will take the old product and compare it with the new to see if it is indeed an improvement. We may knock the critics at times but if it wasn't for them we may all be taken for a ride more often. Also unlike many manufacturer reviews, these digital cameras are put through their paces and given many standard tests to pass so you know that the criteria is the same for al of them and not made up as they go along.

Of course if you are familiar with the product then why not give your own review. Of course, you first need to buy your own digital camera, try it out and compare everything that you do with it to the things that it claims to be. Do your research if you intend to go down this route though because it won't take much to show your ignorance of the product if you don't now the basics. Try not to be too enthusiastic in your reviews as sometimes they can backfire. After doing so, then you can write your own digital camera review or reviews, depending on how many things you've learned from your digital camera. Always let your readers know that what you are telling them is from personal experience and not a re-write of other people's reviews.

The most honest digital camera reviews are the best reviews you can look for and trust. Don't sit back and do nothing if you are not happy with your purchase even after all your checking, if it lets you done then contact the manufacturer directly.
Just Posted! Sony DSLR-A200 review

posted by venturist

Just Posted! Our review of the Sony Alpha 200. The simplified version of the ambitious A350, the A200 does without Sony’s clever live view system but comes instead with a very competitive price tag. The result is a more conventional DSLR that boasts a feature set almost the equal of the older A100 at a fraction of the cost. So is this enough to make it the ideal DSLR for users looking to upgrade from their compact digital cameras? Read our full review to find out.
