Though they demand constant affection and will tend to ignore you at times, you will find that you are having fun while training your maltese. It is not necessary however, to be overly rough with your Maltese dog as he/she will begin to listen intently as they associate training with playtime. There are two things that my Maltese, Yuki loves, it's food/treats and toys that squeak. By training him inside the house first, I found that I can get him to listen everytime, by using his treats as a training device. When I taught him to fetch, I called him over, told him to sit and once he did I praised him and gave him a piece of treat. Next I showed him the ball and squeezed it to get him to focus on the noise. Once he perks up at the squeaking noise, I have his undivided attention. I raise my hand with the ball, use my other hand along with my voice to tell him to stay then I throw the ball towards the door and tell him to fetch. Once he retrives the ball and brings it back to me, I give him another piece of treat. When I decided to teach him tug of war, I found that I did not need to use treats as his reward because that was his favorite game. I just bought him a rope bone and he did the rest instinctively.

Maltese dogs are extremely lively and playful and their energy level and playful demeanor remains fairly constant. They like games of chase and are very, very smart and observant. They also like their solitude and will tend to go off on their own and play by themselves. I find that it is best not to obstruct the maltese by crating instead, I let Yuki have the run of the entire house. If you find that they are chewing on anything that you don't want them to chew on, I advise you to simply close off that area where you don't want them to go. I close most of the bedroom and bathroom doors when I am not home because he has been known to take things from the trash bin and chew on electric cords. The only door I leave open is the one where his bed is just in case he wants to sleep in his bed. Also, because Yuki is a fairly small dog, I do not allow him to jump from high places as I have a fear of him breaking a limb. Training your maltese dog is very easy and fun for both owner and dog.
