Yea! Two Concerts & King Tut!

posted by cyberpenguin
I'm so excited! This week I'll be going with my fiancé, Erik, to see Thomas Dolby this Wednesday, and then the Cure this Friday, and then the King Tut exhibit on Saturday! Wow! This week is going to be jam-packed with non-stop activity!

It's been a rough few weeks for multiple reasons (some of which have been briefly mentioned in my other blogs), so I'm really looking forward to some entertaining & educational diversions this week/weekend.

Erik & I are huge Dolby fans, as I've probably mentioned earlier. In honor of Dolby's upcoming concert, I'd like to post some of the songs he played on his Sole Inhabitants tour, which I saw the last time he came to town:

"Leipzig is Calling"

"One of Our Submarines"

"Live in a Suitcase"

"Flying North"

"One of Our Submarines"

(You can download the Sole Inhabitants podcasts directly from his website.)

And then I'd also like to include this song, because I think the lyrics & music are beautiful:

And just for the heck of it, here's an 80's synthesizer medley that'll probably take some of you back a bit:

A few notes regarding the Cure concert: I'm looking forward to this concert as well, but to be honest, not as much as the Dolby concert. While I like the Cure, Erik's the true dyed-in-the-wool Cure fan of the two of us. Hopefully, I get more excited about it once it gets closer to concert time. Since I've never actually seen them live before, who knows, they could be fantastically exciting in concert. Since I've already posted Cure songs previously, I'll just list their official website for those who'd like to visit.

And lastly but certainly not "least-ly" (!), The King Tut exhibit promises to be really interesting as well. Although his golden mask, mummy, & sarcophagus are not part of the exhibit, since they are in fragile condition & will never leave Egypt again, many of the artifacts belonging to both King Tut & his predecessors will be on exhibit for the public to see. What makes this museum exhibit really remarkable & tantalizing is that it's the first time since the 1970's that King Tut's treasures have traveled.

Anyone who knows me knows exactly how into Egyptology I am. So I am very excited to see this particular exhibit. One of these days I'm going to visit both the Cairo & British museums, in addition to Giza, Deir el-Bahri, Thebes, Karnak/Luxor, Memphis, Valley of the Kings, etc., etc. But in the meanwhile, I'm really looking forward to this weekend's excursion into ancient history......

I'll certainly report here on how the concerts & the museum exhibition turn out.

Have a good week!
-C

King Tut 2 Is #1 Attraction

posted by luxemont

Arts & Culture: Last year we told you that the King Tut 2 exhibit would be a great event to catch. It turns out that approximately 1.29 million visitors had similar feelings, as the “Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs” exhibit at the Franklin Institute was the number-one show of antiquities worldwide in 2007.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the show, which ran from February to September 2007 at the Franklin, averaged 5,375 visitors per day. The second largest drawing exhibit was “Manet to Picasso,” which drew 1.11 million visitors to London’s National Gallery from September 2006 to May 2007.

Everywhere The Glint Of Gold

posted by Stephanella

I am slightly saddened that the best I can post is a picture of a book cover but photography was not allowed at the Tutankhamun exhibition and, deep down, I was mildly relieved. I find that photography very often gets in the way of enjoyment; when you're in a 'blink and you'll miss it' situation, clutching a camera is the sure-way to missing it. As is often the case when I attend an exhibition, I felt my heart skipping in my chest as I was waiting to enter, clutching tightly my recorded guide and imagining what was only finally just a wall away. Tut's funeral mask (the face he is known as, even though it is not a very good likeness of the king since it was destined for someone other than he) was not at this exhibition because deemed too fragile to travel. My friend was lucky enough to have seen this (and the sarcophagi) the last time this exhibition came to London, over 35 years ago, but I was smitten all the same, because one coffinette was there, as was a marvellous wooden bust of the king as a child.

The videos and images were also extremely interesting, for they showed the CAT scans of the mummy and what it looked like upon first opening of the sarcophagi. I shuffled from artifact to artifact with my eyes wide open, photographing everything with my retina, trying desperately to impress my memory for ever. Looking at his shrivelled face made me feel awkward, as if I had been intruding into something intimate that should have remained shrouded from wanton eyes. Did he have an inkling in his lifetime that he would have become one of the world's most famous historical figures, one whose face is, and has been, recognizable across continents and all eras, across cultures and languages? Unlikely. And to think that he was only a boy king is even more fascinating in the mysterious show still going on that is Tutankhamun's reign, one that lives on, so many centuries after he.
