The Yankees come home to face the Detroit Tigers for the first time this season. Last year the teams split the 8 game season series.

Detroit comes into Yankee Stadium as one of the bigger disappointments of the early season with an 11-15 record, they look to be coming out of their early season struggles as they've won 5 of their last 7.

The Yankees are coming off a 10 game road trip where they were 5-5. The lineup still has not found itself, but their pitching seems to be coming around. This series will be a big test for the Yankees pitching staff - especially for Hughes and Kennedy - facing the Tigers and their potent lineup.

Yankees - Jason Giambi: Giambi finished this recent road trip going 7-20 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. Maybe this is a sign that he's coming out of it with the bat. Facing the Tigers may be just what he needs to maintain this minor success as he's hit them very well throughout his career. In 95 games he's batting .316 with 32 HR, 84 RBI and a 1.070 OPS. Last year he hit .286 with 3 HR and 3 RBI against the Tigers, and hit .333 with 2 HR and 4 RBI in '06.

Giambi vs. Rogers: .435 (10-for-23), 4 HR, 9 RBI, 1.567 OPS

INJURY REPORT

Yankees:
- Wilson Betemit is still on the DL with pink eye.
- Alex Rodriguez will miss at least one game this series because his quad is still not 100%. Rodriguez said in the post game yesterday that if he had to guess, he would be out for more than one day.
- Jorge Posada is on the DL with a shoulder injury, and may need surgery. More info will be released today.
- Brian Bruney is out for the year with an injured foot.

Tigers:
- Dontrelle Willis is on the 15-day DL with a hyperextended right knee. He threw about 50 pitches against several Tigers' hitters on Saturday and didn't feel any pain.

Detroit Steals A-Rod's Thunder

Everyone's favorite Boras client snagged his third American League MVP Award (his second MVP in Yankee pinstripes) from the Baseball Writers Association of America yesterday, winning in a landslide over the other candidates. Alex Rodriguez is just the fifth AL player to win the award three times.

But the voting wasn't unanimous- A-Rod only garnered 26 of 28 first place votes. It seems that two rogue (hero?) writers out of the Detroit area managed to throw a little rain on A-Rod's parade by voting the Tigers' Magglio Ordonez in first place. Tom Gage of the Detroit News and Tim Hawkins of the Oakland Press (Pontiac, Mich.) prevented Rodriguez from being able to do a Unanimous Victory Dance- instead, A-Rod had to settle for just a Very Convincing Victory Dance.

"I saw Magglio play every day," Hawkins said. "What I saw was a player having an MVP year. I have no quarrel with anyone who voted for A-Rod. He also had an MVP year. But with the injuries the Tigers had and the effort and performance I saw from Magglio, there's no question he had an MVP year."

Am I allowed to enjoy the outrage of Yankees fans over the two Detroit writers who voted A-Rod in second, when there was no such outrage from them about the New York writer who left Josh Beckett completely off his Cy Young ballot altogether? What's good for the goose...

Is Jose Canseco Taking Some Advice From Tony Soprano?

Wow, just when I was quasi-praising Jose Canseco for his expose of drugs in baseball while also fulfilling his own self-absorbed prophecies, he's at it again. This time, well, he's become self-serving again for the good of his bank account.

Well, the author of "Juiced", according to the New York Times, offered to keep Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordóñez “clear” in his next book in exchange for a financial investment, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Damn, get James Gandolfini on the phone stat!

From the New York Times:Four people in baseball confirmed that referrals were made from Major League Baseball to the F.B.I. regarding Canseco’s actions relating to the six-time All-Star outfielder Magglio Ordóñez, who was not mentioned in Canseco’s earlier book or in any other report on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. All four insisted on anonymity because they said they didn’t have authority to speak about the events.

The F.B.I. did not open a formal investigation because Ordóñez said he did not want to pursue the complaint.

Canseco denied that he — or any associate of his — ever asked Ordóñez for money to keep his name out of a book titled “Vindicated.”

“Absolutely not,” Canseco said in a telephone interview Wednesday. He also said he had not been told about being the subject of F.B.I. referrals.

Canseco said he tried to contact Ordóñez several months ago to talk about his books but did not hear back from him. Canseco refused to say whether Ordóñez would be named in connection with performance-enhancing drugs in his second book. “You are going to have to buy the book to see that,” he said.

Reached at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Wednesday, Ordóñez said he did not want to talk in detail about Canseco. Although he criticized him for writing his tell-all book, he said he did not want to get involved with any formal investigation.

“I didn’t want to press charges against him,” Ordóñez said. “I don’t want any problems. He is probably desperate for money. I don’t understand why he is trying to put people down.”

He confirmed that he had talked about Canseco’s reaching out to him with Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski last summer. The Tigers passed the complaint on to the commissioner’s office in New York, which then filed a complaint with the F.B.I.

Asked whether Canseco had ever specifically asked him for money, Ordóñez said, “No.”

“One of José’s friends was leaving me messages,” Ordóñez said. “I told Dombrowski because I didn’t know why he was calling me.”

What the hell? Geez, any credibility you built up Jose is gone now if it is true; alas, knowing anything with Canseco, it could not be outside the realm of possibility.
