Taking Refuge in Spirit

If you are lucky enough, you will experience for yourself the simple truth that all external experiences are finite. Absolutely nothing lasts...nothing. So, how can one find peace and solace in a world where absolutely everything changes constantly? The answer is to just sit still, let go of all things in one's mind, and just abide in the Divine Presence of Spirit that is all pervasive. Spirit cannot be seen. It cannot be tasted. It cannot be felt. It cannot be smelled. However, the more one practices meditation and contemplation, one will experience firsthand that this primal energy is always there, 24/7. And this Spirit is with Cosmic Intelligence, patiently awaiting our simple acknowledgment of Its Divine Presence. Divine Spirit, best perceived via the Sacred Syllable OM, is the True Essence of the Absolute Itself. All great souls like Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Christ are part of this Divine Presence. This is why Jesus says: "I am with you always". It is because he knows that His True Self is Divine Spirit also. So, as we abide in perfect silence and stillness, we are taking refuge in Divine Spirit, our True Source. Divine Spirit cares not for our lives based upon ego and societal recognition. This is where pain, suffering and agony begin: we seek approval from others, but this is like asking one's dog to tell you that you are beautiful. The dog will only look at you and bark or just sit in your lap. A dog cannot speak. We must meditate and enjoy silent stillness to perceive firsthand the presence of Divine Spirit. The sages of India and Tibet say that "OM" is the sound that reveals the presence of Divine Spirit. And here is where we may experience timeless peace. Family, friends, work, career, travel, social life, and even experiences in one's church come and go. So, what remains? Divine Spirit: the True Essence of the Universe, all Divine Beings, and the Cosmos Itself.

The Sacred Syllable OM is also spelled A-U-M, with each letter symbolizing an eternal activity or characteristic of Divine Spirit. The letter "A" symbolizes creation and all acts of creation. We think that we create thing in our lives, but rather it is Divine Spirit that works through us to fulfill the creative process. Without Divine Spirit, we can do nothing. The letter "U" symbolizes maintenance after creation. So, let us imagine a couple that has built a new home. Now they must maintain that house so that the house can continue to serve them as a residence. This is what is meant by "maintenance". A majority of our activities in this life are maintenance oriented, and many times detract from our ability to spend quality time "in the spirit". Finally, the letter "M" symbolizes universal dissolution or destruction. Many religions say that the devil is in charge of destruction, but that is incorrect. Divine Spirit is in charge of all things, even acts of destruction. Why? Because this is the inherent nature of the Divine. Finally, amidst all of these activities, Divine Spirit is Omnipresent in perfect rest and relaxation. Therefore, chanting OM (AUM) or meditating on OM is reflecting upon the incredibly mystery of our existence and how it is a direct function of the complete nature of the Divine: creation, maintenance, dissolution, and rest. Indeed, OM (AUM) says it all.

Faith: The Final Frontier

In the Bible, Jesus tells us "with faith the size of a mustard seed, you can tell the mountain 'fall into the sea, and it will do just this'." Amazing indeed. All because of faith. If you think about it, our lives are a journey of faith. Faith is not something we can prove with science or mathematics or even computer technology. Rather, faith is our ability to feel connected to our Divine Source without doubts. Faith is not easy, and life is a continuous trial and growth toward better and better faith. For me, Sacred Syllable OM Meditation has allowed me to grow in faith because there is a perfect alignment between the Divine Sound "OM" and what is written in the Hindu Upanishads, Gita, and even in the Bible and other texts indirectly. Religion in an of itself is a difficult path because we are asked to believe in something with no chance for direct experience. However with the Sacred Syllable OM, you can experience it in meditation, silence, contemplation, and everyday sound-phenomena. So, OM is not some far-removed religious goal or ideal, it is right here and now for us to experience and take refuge, because it is an Absolute Sound, according to the Masters who have gone before us.

Spiritual Life & Material Life

In many ways, we all live double lives: because we are both matter and spirit. On the matter side, we have a physical body with many needs - physical and even emotional. We seek gainful employment or business opportunities and romance to fulfill our materialistic concept of self, which is mostly about our image and what others think about us - so we work hard to have a nice car, home, and other material possessions so others say "wow, that person is a success". On the other hand, we are spiritual beings: and we are naturally part of the Cosmos in which we live. Vedanta Philosophy asserts that the Sacred Syllable OM allows us to experience our inherent connection with the Universe because the sound vibration of OM is the same vibration that defines our Spiritual Essence and Source. So, meditation and contemplation on OM can grant us a powerful experience that helps us to experience the bliss associated with our Spiritual Life. Ultimately, the material self will fall by the wayside, because its nature is temporal. All the while, the spiritual self remains, and within just minutes, one can easily re-tune into the Divine Sound of the Cosmos, OM, and remember that our true sense of self is based in Divine Spirit.
