"These poor fish are today getting lots of bad press. The unfortunate death of "croc hunter", Steve Irwin, has sparked such a media frenzied hysteria that i felt i needed to just add something here. First, afer doing some googling i found out that in recorded history worldwide there have been 18 deaths that happened as a result of human/stingray contact. I didn't use the word attack beacuse the word "attack" means to initiate aggresion towards someone or something. Unlike many other animals, stingrays never attack EVER. I wish someone would explain this to the media. Anyway, they can cause harm because of their sharp barbs which are positioned at the base of their tails. There is not muscle control there and to get "stung" you must step on them or somehow rub or hit the barb. Steve Irwin must have done something pretty strange to have been stabbed straight thru the heart by a ray that can't use their barbs on purpose. I feel terrible for his family and friends and the many people who loved him, but I think its a shame that we will never know exactly how it happened. I doubt they will ever show the video. One report is that he swam down from behind the ray to hover over its rear while posing for a shot from the camera man. The camera man approached the ray from the front and the ray got spooked and tried to get away catching steve in the chest with the sharp barb. Totally freak accident. 18 people in history. Compare that to just 10 people a year being fatally hit by lightning in Florida."

Jealous of the notoriety received by a fellow stingray who harpooned and delivered swift death to The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, an acrobatic counterpart followed suit in the Florida Keys today when it leapt out of the ocean into a boat, stabbing a woman in the neck with it’s barb. The resulting collision knocked her to the deck where she perished.

Son of a bitch. You go all the way out in the middle of the ocean to get some well-deserved peace and relaxation, only to have the Michael Jordan of stingrays fly out of the murky depths and stab you in the neck. I vote to make sushi out of all these bastards.

Sunday Herald Sun is reporting that Bob Irwin (father of Steve Irwin) is no longer affiliated with the Australian Zoo. Bob thanks zoo staff, Animal Hospital workers, Wildlife Warriors and "all of Steve's friends out there" -- but there was no mention of Terri, Steve’s widow, who has growing control of Steve's empire, and is the mother of his grandchildren Bindi and Bob.

There have been rumors circulating of a rift in the Irwin family for months -- including disagreements on treatment of staff and the commercial direction of the Australian Zoo.
