Animal Cruelty Laws Have No Teeth

posted by thespiritdog

Animal Cruelty Laws Have No Teeth

Although not a lawyer, I am the founding director of Spirit Animal Sanctuary, so I have some knowledge regarding animal abuse cases. The main problem that our judicial system runs into are, dogs are considered property.

Not living, breathing and feeling creatures of God. In the eyes of the law, dogs are the same as any other purchased merchandise. So unless we change an animals distinction at the state and federal levels, the laws will always be lacking real teeth for prosecution. Regardless of how horrific the animal abuse crimes committed may be.

I for one, unfortunately do not see these laws changing anytime soon. To do so would open up a Pandora’s box of civil litigation for veterinarians, veterinary clinics, pet product manufacturers, pet food manufacturers, dog walkers, puppy sitters, boarding facilities , groomers everybody and anybody involved in the pet service or product field. The additional liability and malpractice premiums that the respected industries would be required to carry, would put all but the most basic of services out of reach for a certain percentage of the pet public.

You may say this is a good thing. But even in the best of economic times, enacting such legislation would undoubtedly cause undue financial hardships on all the families employed in these industries. Pets would become luxury items for most people, and sad to say, but maybe this would be the only way to stop the homeless pet population.

Now maybe someone much smarter than me, can figure out a way to accomplish one without the other.

Newkirk, President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, urges the Obama family to adopt a mutt

CHICAGO,IL(RushPRnews)11/05/08-It’s no big secret that Barack and Michelle Obama had promised their daughters a dog once the presidential campaign was over. And last night, during his victory speech, he promised to his daughters, that yes, indeed, they would adopt a dog. But with the family reportedly considering a hypoallergenic goldendoodle, animal groups have been offering loads of advice on what breeds they should buy–or adopt–instead.
Here is a letter for PETA:
Dear President: We hope you are well. We understand that greedy dog breeders are panting and drooling over the prospect that prominent figures may unwittingly promote their business and may try to “sell you on the idea of getting a purebred dog. I’d like to give you some important information before you make your choice.

President, no one needs to tell you that this country is proud to be a melting pot, and that there is something deeply wrong and elitist about wanting only a purebred dog. Millions of Great American Mutts—the dog that should be our national dog—are set to die in our nation’s extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. Compassionate people nationwide are choosing to adopt a homeless pound puppy—a grateful refugee from a society that has not always treated the true “underdog kindly—rather than cater to special interests who do not have dogs’ interests at heart.

Adopting an animal not only saves a life, but demonstrates compassion, and the companion animal overpopulation crisis deserves attention from all Americans. Every animal purchased from a breeder or a pet shop takes a home away from a needy animal at an animal shelter, waiting and hoping for a chance at the American dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Please let us know if we can assist you. I can be reached at 757-622-7382, extension 8302. Thank you.

Very truly yours,

Chinese Fur Farms - BOYCOTT ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA

posted by htbw
I just got this email today. Typically I ignore petition emails as they are usually crap. Honestly, I wish I had ignored this Email. Watching the video of the assholes at a Chinese fur farm has stunned me. As I am writing this post, I am struggling with words to describe how I feel about the situation. Disturbed, sick, saddened and disgusted don't even begin to describe my feelings at this moment in time. It is sort of a numb stomach curling extremely sad feeling.

AQUARIUS, one of our PET Chinchilla's
As I child, I grew up with pets of all sorts, hamsters, Guinea pigs and dogs. Currently, I have 6 very spoiled PET Chinchilla's, and my parents have two dogs which I enjoy visiting and they seem to enjoy the visits. Having been around pets all my life, I know they have feelings and they respond to attention and love.

It sickens me to no end that a group of individuals would consider this type of activity acceptable, further to add to my disdain I cannot believe that a government could condone such activity. China is a communist country, so you better believe they condone this. In fact, they are making money off it.

HERE IS THE VIDEO. If you have small children in the room or have a week stomach, you may not want to watch it.

Pledge to go fur-free at PETA.org.

This is the same country that just recently hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and also manufactures many of the goods consumed by the western world today. PETA is looking to have a petition signed so they can act on these atrocities. Me, I would like to suggest the world stop buying good made by these dirtbags. I am not one to promote hatred against a country, and I understand that all the people in a country cannot be held accountable for the actions of their government.

I consider myself a capitalist and definitely like to save money and make money and am far from a tree hugger. That being said, I ask you to join me in this boycott of good made in China. I know it is difficult to find good made elsewhere, and sometimes it may be impossible. However, most products do have alternatives.

I purposely did not put any ads within this content of this post as I do not want anything to distract from the message within.

HERE IS AN OPINION POLL FROM PETA, it only takes 1 minute to answer please do so
Here is the text from PETA

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms recently, they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

Before they are skinned alive, animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground; workers bludgeon them with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces, causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death. Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International recently toured fur farms in China's Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no regulations governing fur farms in China—farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit—meaning miserable lives and excruciating deaths. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded, "Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness."

On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and, at other times, scorching sun. Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill their babies after delivering litters. Disease and injuries are widespread, and animals suffering from anxiety-induced psychosis chew on their own limbs and throw themselves repeatedly against the cage bars.

The globalization of the fur trade has made it impossible to know where fur products come from. Skins move through international auction houses and are purchased and distributed to manufacturers around the world, and finished goods are often exported. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States. Even if a fur garment's label says it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere—possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

Because a fur's origin can't be traced, anyone who wears any fur at all shares the blame for the horrific conditions on Chinese fur farms. The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to wear any fur. Take PETA's pledge to be fur-free today!

http://www.peta.org/feat/ChineseFurFarms/index.asp

The government complaint alleges that the following violations, among others, were documented by government inspectors at the contract laboratory from 2002 to 2005:
Failure to ensure that personnel were trained to perform experiments on animalsÂ
Failure to properly ventilate housing facilities for dogs and catsÂ
Failure to house cats with a sufficient number of litterboxes and resting surfaces Â
Failure to keep animal-housing facilities clean and in good repair, resulting in injuriesÂ
Failure to maintain comfortable temperatures in animal-housing facilitiesÂ
Failure to provide animals with sufficient space

posted by farmyardchronicle

Stop kitten around: Cats massacred

What do you get if you cross ten cats with a partially blind pensioner driving along a mountain path at over 70mph? This was the question residents of Goolsteiner were left asking last night, when ten cats and a man were killed in what appears to be some sort of cliff-side suicide pact. Except this sick joke was missing something: a punchline.

PAEDO

The old man, Joe Schnuzenheimer, 89, died at the scene. The tragic event left villagers asking, “What’s the difference between ten cats and ten young children?” The chronicle’s answer: “The children would probably have been molested too.” Tasteful? No. But true nonetheless.

CAT

The Chronicle contacted Gary Glitter for a response to this question, but he refused to answer the phone. Nonetheless, controversy ensued when a Chronicle reporter realised that the dialing tone of Glitter’s mobile appeared to be mimicking the sound of thrusting.”It sounded like the rolling down of foreskin over shaft,” she said.

What’s more, the high pitch of the tone suggested a pre-pubescent teenager was present, if not involved in said thrusting.

The police say the incident on the road was a tragic concoction of blindness and utter stupidity. Coroners suggested that the old man believed the eyes of the cats walking towards him were those marking the central median.

“He just thought he was following the road like any other,” said Dr Ray Troppshteif. “But instead of running over cat’s eyes, he ended up running into the eyes of actual cats.”

The reality is that the cats were simply walking. “They were simply walking,” said Constable Johnno Freidrich.

ROAD

The cats were named today: Throb, Gribbo, Froyd, Hoobrus, Helmo, Willhelm, Grockenheim, Wincy, Koolabular, and Steve. Flowers were left at the scene as a mark of respect, leaving the police asking: “Would any of this have happened if cars hadn’t been invented?”
