A ghost on the cover of The New Yorker this week, or rather the outline of Fidel Castro in smoke, to commemorate his announcement that he is stepping down.

I remember the Spanish class when our teacher Mr. Frankel practically cried, he was so happy that Batista had been overthrown. His wife was Cuban, and her family had suffered under the dictator. When Castro and his friends took over, Mr. Frankel was sure times would get better.

There’s no way of telling what happened to his wife’s family—he would be in his 80s by now, and after I left to go to university I came back only a few times. But certainly the saga of Cuba has been something to watch with interest. In Canada we’ve had a good vantage point too: there is no trade embargo here, Cuban dairy cows are descendants of Quebec cattle, Havana is a favourite winter get-away destination.

Lately, as I’ve been researching The Walkable City, I’ve learned about the way Cubans responded to the collapse of the Soviet empire in the 1990s by making a jump into green, urban agriculture that may teach us all a lot about what can be done on not much land with recycling of waste and careful cultivation. And, as it happens, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has a big exhibit of Cuban art right now which has been getting rave reviews.

But as Castro fades to black I found these links to a very unusual look at Cuba today: two short programs about Havana produced last summer by Al Jazeerah’s English service. Check them out if you like dancing…and surprises.

Finavera’s 35-ton buoys rise above the water about 6 feet but extend beneath the surface some 60 feet, where a piston encased in an underwater steel cylinder rises and falls with the waves and pushes pressurized seawater through rubber hoses. The water is then pumped into a turbine inside the buoy which spins to create power. Finavera’s first ocean test last year ended in disaster when its $2 million buoy deployed off Oregon’s coast sunk to the sea floor.

AP - Just 15 miles off Florida’s coast, the world’s most powerful sustained ocean current — the mighty Gulf Stream — rushes by at nearly 8.5 billion gallons per second. And it never stops.

To scientists, it represents a tantalizing possibility: a new, plentiful and uninterrupted source of clean energy.

“We can produce power 24/7,” said Frederick Driscoll, director of the university’s Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology. Using a $5 million research grant from the state, the university is working to develop the technology in hopes that big energy and engineering companies will eventually build huge underwater arrays of turbines.

Branches of government shift the fulcrum for balancing supposed democratically derived rights. What is permissible one day often is retroactively and wrongfully punished the next.
Debate is welcomed on this site. Devolution into fruitless quarrelling is not.

The Righteous Appeal to Softening Hearts

The Real Liberal Christian Church is completely dependent upon charitable gifts, offerings, and collections of all sizes to cover operating expenses, to continue our outreach program, and most importantly to build up funds needed to create the Christian Commons (explained in brief below).
All offerings beyond meeting the Church's very low operating budget will go into the Land and Building Fund.
The Church will first employ that Fund to acquire arable land (Christian Commons) where dedicated real Christians will live and, among all the other things called for by Jesus, grow food and make clothes and things for themselves and the poor and needy. The Christian Commons will help supply local food banks and will start food banks where necessary. The Commons is an integral part of the long-term solution for feeding the lambs and sheep of Jesus Christ (as he directed, per the Gospel of John) and for eventually feeding all the children of God, which includes everyone if they will but receive it.

Enough Christian Commons can and will house, clothe, and feed the poor for free and do all the rest of the commandments of Jesus Christ. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. — John 21:15.
The Christian Commons will be beacons of light.
Those Commons will shine the movement of the Holy Spirit of truth that is unselfish love.

Envision the world covered by Christian Commons full of compassion and the spirit of giving and sharing — bringing forth. Let us all be moved together by the spirit of mercy as called for by Jesus Christ. It is the New Commandment in action. We can come together in peace, generosity, strength, enthusiasm, and purity of heart, mind, body, and soul.

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. — Mark 10:25.
Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. — Job 33:24.
The ransom of a man's life are his riches.... — Proverbs 13:8. This does not mean that one may simply use his or her money to purchase a ticket to Heaven. It means unselfishness is the only right spirit. Giving and sharing indifferently or out of selfish fears of Hell and damnation is not the right spirit. However, how many people will actually give and share where they are not coerced to do so unless they are truly moved by compassion? We say that in the absence of coercion or huge and immediate miraculous signs, people give and share out of faith. They give, because they believe that what Jesus has taught and what he still exemplifies is moral and its opposite is immoral.

Encourage others by your relatively anonymous example.

Arguably the single most destructive human action for the world’s oceans, bottom trawling, a practice commonly used to dredge up deep water fish, leaves behind a trail of destruction that can clearly be seen from space. The above image of the Gulf of Mexico, captured by the Landsat satellite in late 1999, shows the sediment trails left behind by individual ships (the bright spots) - a testament to the utter devastation the practice exerts on vast seafloor ecosystems.

RLCC: Visit the link to see the image. When one thinks about the size of the area impacted each year and that areas are hit year after year, it isn’t difficult to understand why fish populations are being devastated and how the sea bottom is being ruined by greedy, thoughtless, short-sighted people.
