More trouble for Tata Nano, now from Europe

Is trouble Tata Nano’s middle name? As it appeared like the decks were cleared for a delayed launch of the car, more trouble has come for Tata Motors in the form of extended delays of future variants.

Even before it could hit the Indian roads, the Tata Nano has a huge demand in developed markets in Western Europe and understandably, as their need for cheap transportation is similar to India’s.

But success in Europe hinges not on the low price tag, as EU says that the car must meet safety and environment norms to enter the market. Then there is the consumer preferences, which lean towards diesel motors.

The delay so far is due to the transfer of the plant from West Bengal to Gujarat. More delay is expected, as modifications have to be made to the car’s blueprint, to meet EU safety standards. But, after the first few units roll out, prolonged waiting period should’nt be a surprise. Some vendors have already made investments towards the Nano, this is surely bad news to them.

The European price tag will not be any close to Rs.1Lakh, but it will be a completely different from the Indian version. The cost differential between a petrol and diesel Tata Nano in the future is going to be about Rs 15,000-20,000. Although it’s not very big an amount, the bad news is that delays due to the Singur episode meant that, the diesel version wouldn’t hit the markets till 2010.

IAB Comment- The best approach would be using Fiat’s facilities to produce this car across the world. Fiat could make alterations to the existing car so that it can meet the required safety standards. The 2-cylinder petrol engine on the Tata Nano is a clean engine and so will be the diesel version from Bosch, so changes need to performed only to the engine’s ECU, in case anything is required at all. Re branding is the easiest way out for the Tata’s.

Ratan Tata to meet WB chief minister today

In a last-ditch effort to salvage the Nano car project in the West Bengal, Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata would meet West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee in Kolkata on Friday.

Government sources said the meeting would take place at the Writers' Buildings in the afternoon.

The meeting, sources said, would try to find a solution to the impasse which has led to suspension of work at the Nano project at Singur due to political reasons since 29th August.

While the state government has assured Tata that all help would be extended for resumption of work at Singur, Tatas have said it is not possible to work under police protection.

Tata has also said that they would be forced to shift the Nano project from Singur if normalcy was not restored at the project area.

Trinamool Congress, which has for the last two years waged an agitation opposition farmland acquisition for the project, demanded return of 400 acres from the 1,000-acre project site to "unwilling" farmers.

West Bengal government, however, is ready to concede only 70 acres and it agrees with the Tatas that the integrated land pattern of the project should not be disturbed.

With the prospects of Nano rolling out from Singur now becoming bleak, Bhattacharjee had written to Tata asking him not to pull out and expressed his desire for a meeting on the issue.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Saturday renewed his appeal to Tata Motors to set up its Nano car project in the state and assured to provide all facilities.

"The 100-year-old Tata company is a Jharkhand company and we are assuring Tata Motors assistance to set up their Nano car project in the state," Soren said addressing industrialists at 'Canvas India-2008' trade fair in Jamshedpur.

"When we can allot huge tracts of land and other facilities to the Tatas to set up a steel plant as well as an automobile unit in Jamshedpur, cannot we provide a small piece of land for the Nano project in Jharkhand ?" he asked and suggested that the company leave Singur, where it is facing resistance.

Soren had made a similar offer a month ago when he assumed power.

Jharkhand Industry Minister Sudhir Mahto had said Tata Motors could identify land anywhere in the state for the small car project and the government would provide land and other facilities at the earliest.

"Is there a need for a meeting?" Deb said when asked whether the state government will have a meeting with Tata Motors officials.

"I do not think there is a need for a meeting," he told a news agency.

The Chief Secretary had on Friday said that the meeting between the state government and the Tata Motors officials will be held on 28th September.

Asked whether Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in his letter to Ratan Tata had sought a meeting to discuss the thorny issue, Deb said "I have not seen the contents of the letter."

The chief minister had asked Ratan Tata on Friday to restart work at Singur Nano project. Work on the project has been suspended for close to a month because of the protest by the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

A deadlock was created when the state government disagreed with opposition Trinamool Congress on land allotment to the Tatas.
