Five Pakistani Women Buried Alive for Wanting Choice of Spouse

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information from a remote area of Balochistan province, that five women were buried alive, allegedly by the younger brother of Mr. Sadiq Umrani, the provincial minister and a prominent leader of the Pakistan People's Party, the ruling party.

However, police have still not arrested the perpetrators one month after the incident.

CASE DETAILS: (excerpts)
The incident of the women being buried alive occurred in a remote village, the Baba Kot, 80 kilometers away from Usta Mohammad city of Jafferabad district.

It is believed that due to the influence of the minister and his brother the incident was not reported in the media.

According to the information received, five women were Ms. Fatima, wife of Umeed Ali Umrani, Jannat Bibi, wife of Qaiser Khan, Fauzia, daughter of Ata Mohammad Umrani, and two other girls, aged between 16 to 18 years.

They were at the house of Mr. Chandio at Baba Kot village and to leave for a civil court at Usta Mohammad, district Jafarabad, so that three of the girls could marry the men of their choice. Their decision to have marriage in court was the result of several days of discussions with the elders of the tribe who refused them permission to marry. The names of two younger girls were not ascertained because of strong control of tribal leaders in the area.

As the news of their plans leaked out, Mr. Abdul Sattar Umrani, a brother of the minister, came with more than six persons and abducted them at gunpoint. They were taken in a Land Cruiser jeep, bearing a registration number plate of the Balochistan government, to another remote area, Nau Abadi, in the vicinity of Baba Kot.

After reaching the deserted area of Nau Abadi, Abdul Sattar Umrani and his six companions took the three younger women out of the jeep and beat them before allegedly opening fire with their guns. The girls were seriously injured but were still alive at that moment. Sattar Umrani and his accomplices hurled them into a wide ditch and covered them with earth and stones.

The two older women were an aunt of Fauzia and the other, the mother of one minor. When they protested and tried to stop the burial of the minors that were plainly alive, the attackers were so angry that they also pushed them into the ditch and buried all alive. After completing the burial, they fired several shots into to the air so that no one would come close.

The minors were educated and were studying in classes from 10 to 12. They were punished for trying to decide about their marriages.

After one month the police have still not registered the case and it is difficult to get more detailed information. The provincial minister is so powerful that police are reluctant to provide details on the murder. When the AHRC contacted Mr. Sadiq Umrani, provincial minister, he confirmed the incident by saying that only three women had been killed by unknown persons. He denied his or his brother's involvement. He went on to say that the police will not disclose any information about the case as to do so now would be implicate themselves.

However, concerned officers of two different police stations have confirmed the incident and explained that no one is providing any information. Also as they could not find the graves of the victims it is difficult to register the case. The victim's family members have since left the place and their whereabouts are unknown.

The alleged perpetrator, Mr. Abdul Sattar Umrani, the brother of the provincial minister, was also involved in murder of three persons, including one young woman, in January 2006. That case was similar in that a school teacher, Mr. Mohammad Aslam, was going with his lover in a taxi to a civil court to court marry. The perpetrators stopped them at Manjo Shori, sub district Tumboo, District Naseerabad and killed all three persons by gun fire. The dead included the taxi driver, Mr. Jabal Aidee.

The police were unable to institute a murder case for five months until the intervention of Mr. Iftekhar Choudhry, the deposed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and also the deputy speaker of Senate. But only one person was arrested and the perpetrator Abdul Sattar Umrani remains at large.

Every year in Pakistan hundreds of women, of all ages and in all parts of the country, are reported killed in the name of honour. Many more cases go unreported. Almost all go unpunished.

The lives of millions of women in Pakistan are circumscribed by traditions, which enforce extreme seclusion and submission to men many of whom impose their virtually proprietarily control over women with violence. For the most part, women bear the traditional male control over every aspect of their bodies, speech and behaviour with stoicism, as part of their kismat (fate), but exposure to media, the work of women's rights groups and the greater degree of mobility have seen the beginnings of women's rights awareness seep into the secluded world of women.

But if women begin to exert these rights, however tentatively, they often face more repression and punishment: the curve of honour killings has increased parallel to the rise in the awareness in rights. State indifference, discriminatory laws and the gender bias of much of the country's police force and judiciary have ensured virtual impunity for perpetuators of honour killings.

It is paradoxical that women who enjoy such a poor status in society and have no standing in family should become a focal point of a false and primitive concept of family honour, which they are accepted to uphold at the expense of their inclinations and preference in the matters of marriage.

Originally a Baluch and Pashtun tribal custom, honour killings are founded in the twin concepts of honour and commodity of women. Women are married off for a bride price paid to the father. There is no concept for girls to get marriage on their own choice and if it is found then, they are killed in the name of honour.

9-11 Seven Years Later

Today we remember the 9-11 that changed our lives forever, September 11, 2001. All over our country, the pettiness of politics is laid aside and we are, once again, all Americans. That day made us feel our own mortality and realize life is but a breath in the larger scheme of things.

Today in New York, at Ground Zero, family members and students representing more than 90 countries that lost victims on Sept. 11 read the names of 2,751 people killed in New York. At the same time, family members descended to the nearby footprints of the twin towers and paid their respects to their lost loved ones.

New York City firefighters pause for a moment of silence during a ceremony near their firehouse that lost 15 firefighters in the 9/11 attacks.

Relatives of victims began arriving at dawn at ground zero, now a huge construction site. American flags were draped over silent cranes, and some families held signs saying "We miss you," "We love you" or "You will never be forgotten."

The ceremony included many tearful remembrances as family members reflected on the amount of time that has passed since Sept. 11 and expressed their support for the American troops.

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke at the ceremony -- as he has every year in New York -- drawing applause from some in the crowd. As the names were being read, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and New York Gov. David Paterson walked down a ramp to lay flowers in the pit where the towers stood.

The Pentagon memorial is the first of three major Sept. 11 memorials to be completed. The two-acre park, located at the spot where American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon's west wall, consists primarily of 184 cantilevered benches, each bearing a victim's name.

The president and first lady marked the anniversary during a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House, then went to the Pentagon where the president spoke at a service.

In Pennsylvania, several hundred people gathered to read the names of 40 victims killed in Shanksville where Flight 93 came down after passengers reportedly stormed the cockpit to thwart terrorists' plans to use that plane as a weapon like the others.

Memorials are years away from being built in Pennsylvania and New York. As in past years, two bright blue beams of light will shine at night on the New York City skyline, in memory of the fallen towers.

Today we remember the fallen, and pray for the 70,000 people who still experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of grief.

Nation Mourns Victims of 2001 Terror Attacks

NEW YORK, (RUSHPRNEWS) 09/11/2008–The nation marked the seventh anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States with memorial services, tributes and moments of silence all over the country. Mona Ghuneim reports from VOA’s New York Bureau.

Seven years after the attacks, New Yorkers gathered at the site where the World Trade Center towers once stood.

As in years past, the New York ceremony included four moments of silence - marking the times that hijacked airplanes crashed into each of the twin towers, and the times when each building collapsed.

This year, family members and students representing the homelands of the victims read aloud the names of more than 2,700 people who died in New York.

The city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, presided over the anniversary event. He said the country came together to bear witness to the “day, which began like any other and ended as none ever has.”

“We return this morning as New Yorkers, Americans and global citizens remembering the innocent people from 95 nations and territories that lost their lives together that day,” Bloomberg said.

In Washington, President Bush and first lady Laura Bush observed a moment of silence at the White House. The president then attended the dedication of a new September 11 memorial at the Pentagon, where 184 people died when another hijack planes crashed into the building.

Services were also held in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where 40 people died aboard a fourth hijacked plane that crashed into a field, apparently after passengers aboard the craft tried to overcome their captors.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain attended the ceremony in Pennsylvania before heading to New York.

McCain and his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, are expected to appear together at Ground Zero later in the day to pay their silent respects. Laying politics aside for the day, they will place wreaths at the World Trade Center site, then later in the evening speak at a forum on public service at Columbia University.

As in years past, two bright blue light beams will shine at night Thursday over New York City from the spot where the fallen towers stood.

A British cyber groomer was jailed for 12 years today after recruiting the country's youngest terrorist to a "worldwide" holy war against non-Muslims.

Aabid Khan, who was possibly plotting to attack the Queen, was a "key player" in radicalising others.

He had spent years building up a computer "encyclopaedia" of extremist material, including a file on various members of the Royal family, when he met 15-year-old schoolboy Muhammad Munshi.

He lost little time enrolling the teenager in his "mission in life" - the destruction of Western values and the "wiping out" of all "kuffar" or non-believers.

The youngster, whose grandfather is a leading Islamic scholar, was 16 and in the middle of his GCSEs when arrested on his way home from school in 2006.

London's Blackfriars Crown Court heard he had two bags of ball-bearings - the shrapnel of choice for suicide bombers - in his pockets and notes about martyrdom under his bed.

Leading a double life of obedient pupil by day and avid surfer of jihadist websites at night, he also downloaded detailed instructions about making napalm, other high explosives, detonators, and grenades, and "how to kill".

The schoolboy boy then sent them to his mentor-cum-"terrorist facilitator" Khan, and fellow cell member Sultan Muhammad, who also had a large library of terror documents on his computer.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith branded all three a "very real threat" following their convictions yesterday.

Twice-married Khan, 23, a former fast food restaurant worker, of Otley Road, Undercliffe, Bradford, West Yorkshire, was found guilty of three count of possessing articles for a purpose connected with terrorism.

His cousin and "right-hand man", post office night sorter Muhammad, also 23, from nearby Hanover Square, Manningham, who got 10 years, was convicted of three possession charges and one of making a record of information likely to be useful in terrorism.

Munshi, now 18, of Greenwood Street, Saville Town, Dewsbury, who will be sentenced next month, was also found guilty of a making offence.

The three-month trial heard Khan swapped his childhood at 12 for what was to become an all-consuming hatred of non-Muslims.

The cell he set up was part of a "worldwide conspiracy" to kill them, and and to brainwash the vulnerable and impressionable and prepare them for his cause of unremitting violence.

In Munshi he saw the ideal recruit, someone desperate to go abroad and fight.
Khan, 23, described by the Crown Prosecution Service as a "Mr Fixit" of the terror world, was in an ideal position to help.

He had links with proscribed terrorist organisations Jaishe-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, had helped radicalise jailed "wannabe suicide bomber" Mohammed Atif Siddique, and had connections with other convicted terrorists.

The pair had long internet chats, swapped documents about "black powder explosives", and even discussed how the schoolboy might smuggle a sword past airport security when he went off to fight.

The Dewsbury teenager, the grandson of Sheikh Yakub Munshi, president of the Islamic Research Institute of Great Britain at the Markazi Mosque, Dewsbury, became the cell's computer specialist.

He also ran a website selling hunting knives and Islamic flags, and had the online profile "fidadee", Arabic for a "person ready to sacrifice themselves for a particular cause".

Simon Denison, prosecuting, said his involvement in terror came to light only after Khan was subjected to a "routine stop" by police at Manchester airport on June 6, 2006.

He was returning from Pakistan - possibly after a training camp - and in his luggage was the largest cyber "encyclopaedia" of articles promoting terrorism yet seized in Britain.

It included personal information and the addresses of 15 members of the royal family, among them the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Also on the list were Princess Alexandra, the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Among the other material was a guide to "beating and killing" non-Muslims, talk of setting up a secret Islamic state in a remote area of Scotland, military training manuals, documents about assassination, surveillance, and buying weapons, and maps of tube systems in London and America.

There were also various handbooks including one on explosives. Another, on poisons, contained a recipe for ricin and encouragement for "brothers" to experiment on "kuffar" (non-believers).

A video in his luggage showed him visiting the Ballakot Mountains, home of a training camp run by Jaishe-Mohammed, one of two terrorist training camps he had links with.

Officers also discovered he had bought two guns - a decommissioned Kalashnikov and a gas-fired AK47-lookalike air rifle - which they think he wanted for terrorist countryside training sessions.

Bradford-born Khan - "Del Boy" to his contacts and an advocate of jihad since he was 12 - ran an "online extremist support network" and spoke in one exchange of finding a "big target and taking it out ... like a military base in the UK".

"Our group is growing. We need to plan better and adapt. Now a few more people are showing interest. We need to confirm and encourage," he added.

Another read: "What I want to do is cause trouble for the kuffar with hit-and-runs everywhere, cause fear and panic in their countries, make them nervous so they make mistakes."

Simon Denison, prosecuting, said Khan was "dedicated" to "violent jihad against anyone, any person or any country which did not believe in his religion", and single-mindedly pursued "his mission in life - the war on western values and anyone who was a non-believer in the Muslim faith".

The material enabled Leeds Counter-Terrorism Unit to identify fellow "jihadists" Munshi and Muhammad, Khan's cousin and "right-hand man".

Iknow that this was a horrific experience for the whole country. For me, talking and writing which I do best eases my tension and makes it easier to cope. Please I look forward to the many stories that I hope people would post.

As a native of NYC, I can remember exactly what I was doing that tragic day. I was in Physics class, and I just remember hearing blaring sirens outside. I went to school right on the FDR drive in NY, so there were always cars and trucks passing. However, the sirens never stopped. They kept coming and coming and I knew something had to be terribly wrong. A kid in my class had a handheld radio and he was listening and letting everyone around him hear. They said that the Twin Towers were hit by a plane.

At first, we all thought it was an accident. No on thought it was a terrorist attack, after all what was that. We had not experienced something like that before. Next thing, I heard our loud speaker going off, and the principal had said that school was cancelled. Parents were called, for those whose service could get through. (The Towers were a main hub for cell phone signals and TV). We were told that we had to stay in school until a family member came to pick us up. I lived in the Bronx, and at that time the bridges out of Manhattan were closed to automotive traffic. The trains cancelled for a period of time, and buses took on the job of bringing people out of lower manhattan. I walked behind security and left school.

I knew that I had to get home. I walked and walked and remember seeing streams of people walking up first avenue. Some of the people were covered in ash, but they kept walking; some had their heads down while other were smoking cigaretts. I joined the crowd and went home. My mother wasn't able to come home at the time she normally would. She was a nurse and during this time, any type of medical care provider was needed. Just recentlty, she talked about her experience there and it how it still haunts her.

She told me stories about how she saw people jumping out the windows and ultimately who fell to their deaths. She remembers walking outside the hospital and hearing fighter jets swishing between the buildings, flying really low. We were told that another plan was still in the air and that the jets were looking for it to shoot it out the air. She told me that it felt like it was a movie, and indeed it did.

My school was right across the river from a military base and all I heard was military aircrafts flying low over my head. I did not know what was happening and what could still be up in the air. I knew that I just wanted to be home.

After I got home, just sat with my little sister, brother and stepdad and waited for my mom to get home. No one could get her and she couldn't leave the island of Manhattan, not at that time anyway. She got home late that night and none of us could have imagined what had happened that day.

In the few hours that passed, there was nothing on TV but coverage of the disaster area. Also, the media kept playing footage of the Towers coming down. There was also the time when people were on TV with pictures of their loved ones asking if anyone had seen them. That was the saddest thing I could have seen and it lasted so long. Some people still to this day have recovered the remains of their loved ones. A few days after all this, all I did was cry in my bed.
