Wednesday Wanderings - Your Chance To Win

Over the past couple weeks I have been showcasing pictures on a related theme from my photographic wanderings. This is the fourth week .I will display the fourth picture together with all the three previous pictures for you to vote for your favourite. You can vote by leaving a comment on my blog . One lucky voter will win a A4 mounted print (400mm x 500mm mount) of their favourite picture (completely free of charge including P&P), which would normally be £35.00. I will choose the winner by putting the comments in a virtual hat and then notifying the winner via their blog.

(the only time I will require an address is to be able to post the winning picture, once this has been done the address will be destroyed and will not be passed on to any 3rd party)

Well it is in a small part of Lawley
Richard from Wiggly Wigglers came up to our part of the world to plant the final tree in the new orchard and unveil a plaque to show when the orchard was planted.
Children from Puddle ducks pre-school group, their mums, members of Lawley Green Space Group and members of Telford and Wrekin council came down to join us to celebrate the opening of the orchard. We even had a shiny royal spade to plant the Shropshire damson tree with.

After Richard had planted the tree he enlisted all the children to 'firm the tree in'. The children made short work of firming it in and were then ready to each plant one of the 300 wildflowers we have.

Not before a quick photo opportunity with the children, Richard and myself was had.

We all got stuck in making holes for the plants, with the big-uns assisting where required.

Once the plants were tipped out of the pots, which funnily enough wouldn't come out until the bottom had been tapped with the well known gardeners magic tap, it works every time so it must be magic...

Once planted they were then watered in. We then moved on to putting some seed onto the new green roof on the habitat tower, I think there will be plenty of wildflowers growing here as the children made sure enough seed was added....

It was at this point though that the cry went up that they had found a dinosaur bone. Well as you can imagine finding a bone is a major issue and much frantic digging was done to help unearth it.

After a short time the bone was unearthed enough to allow the dinosaur experts to declare it was a very rare find, of not just a bone but the whole skeleton of the Wormus Wriggilus dinosaur. The reason why this dinosaur is so rare is that it looks like a normal tree root and it is easy to over look it. It was just as well we had children who knew their dinosaurs and knew it for what it was and not just a tree root.

The planting ceremony came to an end not long after that and it certainly ended on a high. It is hoped that another day can be arranged soon with the Puddle duck dinosaur hunters , as they are what it is all about. In the meantime the big-uns have still got plenty of work to do and I shall keep you up to date with our activities.

I would just like to thank once again Wiggly Wigglers for their donation and Telford and Wrekin Council and Telford and Wrekin Services for all their help.

I took this on one of my many visits to Berrington Pool, The swan just glided past me after feeding amongst the water lilies.

After yesterdays work party at the Lawley Green Space, I went off on a mission for Butterfly Conservation

It follows on from work that I was involved in last year, recording and relocating two species of butterfly. The two species being Dingy Skipper and the Green Hairstreak . The two species can be found in an area very close to the Ironstone Development but with Butterfly Conservation and the Ironstone Development Group working together their habitat is now safe and more areas are being created.

With it being so windy yesterday it wasn't an ideal time to go and look for them but I thought I would see any way.Telford and Wrekin Council also recognise how important these habitat's are that they have changed the way they manage them, cutting the grass and meadow's accordingly.

I came across 8 Dingy Skippers and 2 Green Hairstreaks in the time I was looking , which is very encouraging considering how windy it was.

I was also chuffed to bits to get this photo of the Green Hairstreak and a 2 Spot Ladybird on a goat willow leaf, it quite an unusual image to have both insects together and gives you an idea of the size of the butterfly.

Whilst looking for the butterflies I came across many other insects but this Flesh Fly really caught my eye and allowed me to get up really close.

One of the things that has really surprised me about the area I live, is how wonderful pockets of beauty exist. I often travel further afield in my quest to photograph wildlife, but I have decided that this year I am going to spend more time locally capturing what is around me. I came across this beautiful wildflower meadow not far from where I was looking for the butterflies and is a place that I have gone past many times and not taken much notice of.

The meadow was beautiful, but in the next field it was a carpet of pure gold. With several species of Buttercup filling the whole field and when the sun shined on it it was quite a sight.

One of the other reasons for not travelling too far is the continuing rising price of fuel. It is becoming an issue for everyone now and is brcoming a factor in deciding whether to travel or not. Also I feel as so much of Telford is disappearing under several major house building projects , it is important to photograph what we have, with a view that this could be used in what other areas are built on in the future.....
