First, a word of warning. Seek medical help immediately if an outbreak of hives includes swelling of the mouth or tongue, or if you have difficulty breathing. Always seek medical attention if hives last for longer than a week without a break.

Hives are bumpy, red, itchy patches that go away in less than a day usually. They are raised bumps because histamine, a chemical in the body, squeezes fluid out of blood vessels and it collects under the skin. It is said that they feel like there is a bunch of bees having a raucous party under the skin, hence the name.

Most people know what causes their little bumps. They know that when they eat a radish, they will end up resembling one.

Some people develop the itchy little bumps after taking certain medications. Some causes are harder to find because they can be triggered by animals, mold, chemicals we use for personal hygiene, and some other diseases like lupus. The weather can also be a factor.

Our body's covering is an organ. As such, it is very sensitive to chemical changes. Stress changes body chemistry, some of it very drastically so yes, stress does cause hives in some people.

When we are at wits end with worry, anger, fear, and torments of every sort, our bodies react in the same way our ancestors reacted when faced with danger. This normal reaction in some people produces hormones meant to get us through danger. These same chemicals are thought to also trigger outbreaks in some people. That's why hives are sometimes viewed as one of the symptoms of anxiety attacks.

If stress caused the rashes, they will stay till the anxiety is removed. One won't go away without the other. If they stay longer than six weeks, they are called chronic hives.

Chronic hives are usually more mysterious. Their causes are rarely uncovered, even by expert investigators. Fortunately, both kinds of hives respond to a variety of treatments.

When hives begin to blossom, you often can save your body from becoming a bouquet of red lumps by taking a cool shower. That's a cool shower. Hot water stimulates histamine release and can turn you into a giant, walking bump colony.

Hives that are caused by stress need two kinds of medication. One is an antihistamine to drain the bumps and another is an antidepressant to help the patient relax. One drug often prescribed is Doxepin. If it appears that the hives are one of the signs of clinical depression for the patient, other medications will be in order.

What to do? First determine whether or not the hives are caused by stress or allergies. They generally appear the same no matter what the cause, so you can't tell just by looking at them whether they're caused by a fight with your spouse or the new carpet shampoo they're using at the office.

The trigger to a hives episode could be just a tiny trace of something or just a sharp word. Doctors recommend keeping an accurate journal of everything involved when the itching begins. Time, day of the week, location, food, chemical smells in the air, everything should be marked down. So, if the cause is not obvious, maybe the experts can find the clue in your journal.

Sometimes, there is an underlying illness causing the hives episode. Always see a doctor to make sure that nothing more serious is displaying itself.
Album Review: The Hives - The Black & White Album

posted by LuisPMA

It’s been a while but Sweden’s favorite band The Hives finally return with their keenly-anticipated follow-up to 2004’s Tyrannosaurus Hives in the form of the upbeat The Black & White Album.

Spearheaded by the explosive single Tick Tick Boom, which is every bit as incendiary a piece of rock ‘n’ roll as its name suggests, the new long-player is a fast, furious and utterly loud composition that mostly exhilarates.

The album marks the first time the band have ventured out of their homeland to record tracks, and was assembled all over the world because – in the words of the band themselves – “we thought it was time to have other people involved besides ourselves and our closest friends”.

Hence, after initial recording at Hive Manor, in Sweden, the band recorded the majority of the LP in Mississippi with producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello).

They also met with Pharrell Williams in Miami and “made some music with him too” (namely T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S and Well Allright!), before spending a week in London at the historic Olympic studios with Jacknife Lee (U2, Bloc Party, Editors) and then returning to Sweden.

The globe-trotting appears to have served the album well – especially in breaking up the traditional hyperactive Hives sound. A couple of tracks stand out by being different and almost surreal.

T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S., for instance, wears the Pharrell influence on its sleeve, emerging as a genuinely funky cut that’s more bass-heavy than most and even soulful in places. It marks a refreshing change of pace from the hard rocking and you’ll be singing along before you know it!

The surreal touches come courtesy of A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors, an instrumental that’s almost child-like in its delivery, and which could just as easily provide the welcome music for a visit to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (or something of its sort), and the Danny Elfman-esque Puppet On A String.

Fortunately, such transgressions are in short supply and the emphasis remains mostly on foot-to-the-pedal rock. Tick Tick Boom sets the standard in spectacularly thrilling fashion, Try It Again goes and underlines it with some thumping percussion and You Got It All… Wrong is a screaming, wailing, head-banging pop-rock blast.

The hand-clap beats fly thick and fast on another high octane favorite, Hey Little World, while Square One Here I Come is a no-nonsense foot-stomper of thrilling intensity.

And Bigger Hole To Fill and Fall Is Just Something Grown-Ups Invented round things off in style.

All in all, then, a very welcome return that pretty much does everything a good Hives album should – pumps you up, rocks you out and leaves you utterly breathless… (il)
