Official MN DNR report on The Lake Weed Roller from Lake Weeders Digest LLC New Hope Minnesota Summer 2008

Stay tuned to this blog as we bring you a new series including several excerpts from a recent report by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Below you will find facts as reported in an April 2008 report on the “automated unattended aquatic plant control device” ie; the WeedRoller that is available at http://www.WeedRoller.MN. From here on, we will interchange the name WeedRoller and “AUAPCD”.

Alright, as you read this, please understand that we are trying to educate our customers and potential customers of the benefits of The WeedRoller. Will it come off like a commercial? Maybe but these are quoted facts from an Minnesota State official report. If you want our editorial comments on this report, contact us at 877-224-4899.

The AUAPCD had a higher satisfaction rating than other methods of aquatic plant control. When asked, “were you satisfoed with your AUAPCD”, 98% of those responding indicated that they were satisfied with these devices.

This is an impressive number when you consider the low satisfaction of lakeshore owners using more traditional means such as chemicals. The percentage nearly drops in half. (We will share that in a later post.)

There are other AUAPCD devices that make up this percentage and based on my field experience, I am 100% certain that some of these other devices actually drag down the 98% (no kidding). We may discuss that in a later post or just call us and we can cover it by phone.

Standard Unit will stand in up to 4-1/2 feet of water at the "Drive head". Unit includes power head, universal dock hardware, power converter, a six-foot main power cord (to converter), and a 70-foot power cord (from converter to power head). Includes 21 feet of rollers.

Rollers are equipped with a flexible coupler at the head and between the seven and fourteen foot lengths. An optional coupler can be installed within the fourteen foot assembly to provide additional flexibility. The couplers allow contouring to variations in the lake bottom.

Deep Water Extension

One Dock Mounting Kit is standard with the Weedroller. Use additional dock mounting hardware to easily move the WeedRoller from one location to another.

Comes with flexible coupler and hardware to attach to existing tubes.

For extreme mud and muck conditions, use the Mud Kit. It acts as a large paddle on the end roller to lift, providing traction in the mud. Remove buoy after the WeedRoller has worked down to firmer lake bottom.

Deep water extension kit: Two foot extension kit to increase the maximum water depth of standard unit from 4-1/2 feet to 6-1/2 feet. Up to two extensions can be added per Weedroller.

Side post mounting: This mount kit is for docks with no posts on the ends for mounting the standard dock mounts. Kit mounts flat on the side plates of the dock.

Flex coupler: Flex coupler assembly for replacement, or to add between the two 7 foot lengths of the 14 foot roller assembly. Provides flexibility between rollers to contour to lake bottom.

The extended warranty is offered on all new AC WeedRollers sold, model number 51325 or any WeedRoller with a serial number higher than 101256. The optional warranty extends the warranty period to 3 years or 3,600 hours (whichever occurs first).

Hey, why are all of the testimonials from MINNESOTA? That's a good question!
Currently there are THOUSANDS in use today - and that's just in Minnesota (the birthplace of the WeedRoller). The WeedRoller is one of those products that has been succesfully sold by word of mouth and by referral. Why Do Some States Regulate The Use The WeedRoller?
POINT: Environmentalists are concerned that a WeedRoller has the ability to remove vegetation, lift silt and compact the bottom with a final result being a hard, packed, weed free, sandy bottom.
COUNTERPOINT: Yes, The WeedRoller will create a hard, packed, weed free, sandy bottom in a specific, defined area. However, it is our opinion that many lakeshore owners will do what they want to do to develop a small swimming area near their dock. Using an automated system that is typically stationary with the dock creates less environmental risk than harsh chemicals that may drift far from the application and are often applied without proper knowledge.

As summer begins to wind down and fall gears up, frustrated lake and pond owners that have spent the summer overwhelmed by weeds, muck and algae decide that now is the time to give up on managing their waterfront and hope that next year will be a much better year.
However, if proactive steps are not taken now, there is a good chance that next summer will be worse!

Now is THE most important time for waterfront maintenance!

* If you allow the vegetation to die off naturally (or chemically), it will settle to the bottom, create another layer of muck and provide a nutrient rich fuel for algae blooms and next years plant growth. Be proactive and take control by removing the plants mechanically now. http://www.LakeWeeds.MN
* Many invasive weeds such as eurasian water-milfoil are self-fragmenting. If they are allowed a natural die-off, they will fragment on their own and are likely to replant in other areas of your waterfront.
* Future growth of cattails can be dramatically reduced by cutting below the waterline in the late summer. This is not an easy project unless you have the right tools. Our Aquatic Vegetation Groomer, Lake Mower and WeedShear (in that order) are capable of getting it done.
* Lily pads are working very hard at this time of the year to develop a stronger root system to expand their reach further next spring. Removing the pad at this time will weaken the entire root system. All of our cutting tools work well on lily pads.
* The bottom muck and organic sediment should also be reduced by raking, WeedRolling or using our Muck Digester pellets. This effort will reduce future algae and weed growth for years to come.

So, if you want to increase your enjoyment next summer, be proactive and make the commitment right now for the future.
