What Inspires Me

The reason I decided to do this is quite simple… I’m bored and have nothing better to do. When I’m bored I think about what inspires me and to fill to fill the void I shall write.

I’ll start off with what has been the most inspirational as of recent and that would be none other than one of my favorite video games The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is the story of Link and quest to save the land of Termina from an evil entity who is threatening the world by making the moon crash into it. Of course as most monomyths go, Link saves the day, order is restored, and everyone is happy, however it is what happens on the way to saving the world that makes this game so inspirational to me.

The whole story is that an evil entity known as Majora wreaked havoc across the land long ago. Someone was finally able to bring this to an end by trapping Majora in a mask which made Majora’s power and agenda only possible while someone was wearing the mask. To make a long story short someone finds the mask, puts it on, and Majora is back in business. Majora uses his powers to possess the moon and make it crash into the land of Termina. The moon is set to crash in three days, which you means Link must save the world in three days. The thing I found most inspirational from this game is the interactions you have with people throughout Termina.

Obviously having the moon looming in the sky on a crash course with the Earth would be an extremely mentally and emotionally tolling experience and these feelings are captured greatly in Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Each day the people become more and more pathetic and pitiful. People bring up feelings of regret, expressions of true horror, and nostalgic memories. Despite it being a video game it really shows frailty of humans and how sad everyone can be.

When I first got this game I was in sixth grade and as such not developed enough to properly appreciate the game. It was not until I was around 15 that I’d realize this game and how surreal

and despairing it was. There was this one part; this one guy was dancing inside of house to this very transcending/surreal music and the room was very sparkling. The guy was extremely happy and seemed to be carefree despite the impending doom the moon was posing. I thought it was a very trippy scene and from there I just kept finding more and more that made me realize how many levels of symbolism and depth this game held. There are so many religious and mental overtones throughout the game that it’s mind-blowing. Everything subtlety affects everything else in the world no matter how big or small it may be. This concept inspired a lot of thought and inspired quite a few film scripts from myself.

Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is a game I’d recommend for all to play. It was originally released on the N64, however it should soon be coming to the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console in the upcoming months due to how popular it was and its sales figures. The game has a little something for everyone I think and as such should be played by all.

Following up from their critically acclaimed Zelda: Majora's Mask and Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, the Gamecube version caused a stir with its new cartoon visual style. Apart from this the game continues along their well known themes - again aimed towards their fans who had followed the Zelda franchise from its roots on their console in the 80's, the NES.

What Sort of Game is This?

Action adventure games are enjoyed for two reasons. They provide a variety of fast action encounters where you are fighting, fleeing or evading some enemy. They also provide a large world in which to explore and adventure. This exploration is usually driven by some particular plot-tension introduced early in the game that you must resolve.

As you adventure through the world, you encounter the action sequences through encounters with enemies and general hazards. Success in these encounters opens up more of the world to explore and provide new equipment.

What Does This Game Add to the Genre?

The move to cartoon graphics enables Zelda: The Wind Waker to evoke a wider range of emotions from their protagonist link. They manage this while (to the contrary of many fan's disdain) staying true to the series' unique musical and graphical grammar that it has become famous for.

As with the other Zelda games, the genius is in the restraint of its structure - you slowly discover a series of dungeons that represent the main challenge of the game. A new weapon or gadget is discovered close to the entrance of each is then put through its paces as you battle your way through.

Travelling between locations involves sea journeys that may be too close to real life for some - they take a long time. There are moments in the game when you feel that all you have been doing is sailing from one place to another.

What do People Play this Game To Experience?

Although cartoony in style, The Wind Waker is successful at making you care about the characters you meet. It has become famous for re-visiting old locations at different times to create a sense of awe and connection to the world. The paired down style actually adds to this by making noticeable every little blink, smile and grimace from the various characters.

No other game has the attention to detail lavished over so large and interactive an environment. This results in all sorts of incidental enjoyment. Using a barrel to sneak, Looney Tunes like, past the watching guards is a moment full of understated comedy that has stayed with me ever since.

How Much Free Time is Required to Play It?

The Wind Waker starts a little easier than other Zelda games (baring the excellent Phantom Hourglass). A few dungeons in and you feel like you are progressing well. However, as with the other games this is the point when the map opens up and you realise there is a much larger task on your hands.

Because of this you should allow a good hour for each session and expect to put in a good 30 hours to see the experience through to the very end.

What Factors Impact on Suitability for Novice/Expert Young/Old Players?

Although it has a cartoony art style the depiction of troll like monsters may alarm more sensitive children. The sword, boomerang and explosive weapons are by their nature a little violent, although this is always in context - fighting on the side of good verses evil.

Wind Waker's look and feel make it more accessible than earlier games in the series, and certainly the difficulty is toned down at the beginning. As you progress however, difficulty does quickly increase. This means that more experience players are likely to get more value from the game. That said anyone with a degree of inquisitiveness and determination should be able to get a lot out of it.

The Poe Salesman from the Legend of Zelda series, he made his appearance in both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. The Poe Salesman is hanlder and guardian of deceased souls, he will reward rupees and points to Link for bringing him Poe spirits.
