Smashing Pumpkins Love All of Their Audience

MUSIC NEWS- A set-up, a publicity stunt? We don't know but we hope this isn't a regular part of the rest of their 20th Anniversary Tour. In NYC at the United Palace Theatre on the second night (white crosses night) of a two-night stand, which emphasized long, dirge-like non-hits over short and blistering big hits (and bad reviews from the rock press), The Smashing Pumpkins followed an extended version of Heavy Metal Machine with a casual cover of Pink Floyd's Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. After a continued barrage of catcalls from the crowd and after seeing significant numbers of the audience leave, frontman Billy Corgan invited up one very vocal heckler to the stage. "Last night's show fucking sucked, man!" the guy yelled, to the roar of the crowd. Corgan stayed calm initially and asked the man if he'd like his money back, but then told the audience member to leave. And while the man was leaving the stage, Corgan let loose with this:

"By the way, I liked that song you wrote. I heard it was Number 1. Wasn't it Number 1 in Europe? It's called Take Your D*ck Out Of My A*s And Stick It In My Mouth."

MNN says: A little strong, Corgan! Putting everyone in a holiday mood, Corgan then dedicated the next tune to the unnamed heckler, which was to be a delicate version of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide, a song Corgan has performed beautifully for years. It is disgraceful really, the way that I have neglected you. I hope you do not think that I am taking you for granted. Really I'm not. I've just been really, really busy.

That's no excuse, I know.

But would it have killed one of my so-called "contributors" to have kicked in a piece? Nothing elaborate. A short anecdote. A recipe even. A news item. Something to freshen the place up a little.

I'm not going to name names here, but there was not long ago, the promise of a story, centered on the purchase of a $100 waste basket.

It was to have contained deep psychological undertones and all sorts of marital implications. Possibly even metaphors. You would have loved it.

And I'm still waiting for possibly the strangest, most beloved bedtime story ever told, one that unfolds every night in an East Coast suburb and features four English guys named John, Paul, Ringo and George.

And now here I am making excuses. Because I have been really busy. Reading dirty books. Researching family vacation spots in Nebraska. Rehearsing for a Christmas show in which the vast majority of participants are 10 years old. I have not even had time to clear away the rotting Halloween pumpkins.

Okay that's not true. Not all of it anyway.

The Smashing Pumpkins will appear live on Jimmy Kimmel Tonight and kick off a tour this fall. I like the idea of having two nights of totally different music. Probably won't go see them but if I was a hardcore fan that would be exactly what I would want. Here is what Billy said on his blog...

"Those of you that may have seen either the press release or any info out there about the tour may find yourself scratching your head a bit about the shows format. We tried to keep it simple but as is our custom, its just not always that simple!! SO I thought I would post up some additional info to make sure that there was absolute clarity about what shows would be going on where-when.

First off, the 2 night format is about playing the most songs over 2 nights that would hopefully create very distinct shows from one another. No song will be repeated means exactly as it sounds, if you go to show #1 of a 2 night stand (black sunshine!), you wouldn't hear anything on night # 2 (white crosses) that you heard song-wise on the first night. The cities where we are playing only 1 show will feature an amalgamated show that will most likely have some songs we won't be playing in the 2 night format shows, but take from both the sunshine and the crosses show. Get it? I hope so...cause its a lot for us to digest as well.

Below is a list of shows, where I'll highlight just for overkill what show will be taking place:

Guitar Hero Billy Corgan Underwhelms Best Buy Execs at GHWT Launch Party

At the beginning of this month, we featured self-described “American Gothic” band Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Gorgan getting mo-capped for his debut in Guitar Hero World Tour. As a playable character, he joins the game along with his music including their new single G.L.O.W. While it looks like he’s happy to be in the game, that doesn’t necessarily mean he was planning to play their most mainstream hits when hired to do the Guitar Hero World Tour launch party itself.

An article in the LA Times reports that for the $100,000 paycheck he received for the Guitar Hero event, Corgan rewarded the crowd only with Siva - a song from their first album “Gish” and Tarantula from their 7th album “Zeitgeist”. After a crowd request for some “oldschool… 1979“, Corgan seemed to decide to go in a different direction and filled the rest of the set with some of their newest darker material .

Smashing Pumpkins New York Setlist and Thoughts

The Smashing Pumpkins are on a 20th Anniversary tour of the United States. They (Corgan and Chamberlin) have decided to do two night stints with widely differing setlists each night. There are several reports about these shows. Some reviews claim that it is a circle jerk for Corgan and Chamberlin (my words and take on things, not theirs). Some are reporting that Billy went on an extended 40 minute jam session and refused to play any of the hits. Night one of the two night stint is called "White Crosses." Night two is entitled "Black Sunshine." Now take a look at White Crosses setlist:
