McGreevey Must Pay $250 In Child Support Per Week

NEW YORK -- The long, contentious divorce battle between former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey and his ex, Dina, ended Friday.

The nation's first openly gay governor will not have to pay alimony to his estranged ex-wife.

A superior court judge has ruled that former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey must pay $1,075 a month -- $250 per week -- child support for their daughter.

His ex-wife, Dina Matos, asked for $2,500 per month in alimony for four years and $1,750 a month child support.

McGreevey is now a seminary student who said he's too poor to pay alimony.

Union County Superior Court Judge Karen Cassidy granted the couple's divorce, ending a tumultuous eight-year marriage that crumbled publicly when McGreevey announced he was gay and had a homosexual affair.

Each party claimed financial hardship.

Matos said she was entitled to the lifestyle she enjoyed as New Jersey’s first lady. Jim McGreevey said the scandal that ensued after he revealed he is gay has left him in debt.

The former first couple's marriage unraveled in 2004 when McGreevey announced he was gay and said he had an affair with a male staffer. He resigned 13 months before his first term was to end.

Matos, 41, filed a separate fraud claim against McGreevey, 50. She alleged he married her knowing he was gay because he needed the cover of a wife to advance his political career.

The McGreeveys agreed to share custody of their 6-year-old daughter, but endured an often-embarrassing divorce trial this spring haggling over alimony and support.

The Decision

In total, McGreevey owes his ex-wife more than $100,000, which represents half of the total balances of four separate bank accounts, and he has to split the pension he accrued from the date of the marriage through Feb. 15, 2005, according to the opinion.

McGreevey will not have to pay anything with respect to his book, "The Confession."

Each party is responsible for maintaining their own health insurance. McGreevey will have to pay health and dental insurance for the ex-couple's 6-year-old child, Jacqueline, of whom they share custody, until she is 18 years old or both parties agree otherwise, according to the opinion.

If Jacqueline's non-reimbursed medical and dental expenses exceed a certain amount per year, McGreevey will have to pay two-thirds of the balance and Matos will pay the rest, the judge said.

McGreevey will have to pay for 100 percent of Jacqueline's extra-curricular activities.

Other facets of the divorce trial involved clothing, jewelry, real estate, stock and vehicles.

According to the opinion, McGreevey will not get reimbursed for Matos' clothing or jewelry, but he won't have to share his Merck Stock or any personal property, including his leased car.

Matos, who will also keep her car, has to pay McGreevey $1,500, which represents half of her savings, checking and certificate of deposit assets.

Matos' home in Springfield, N.J., is not subject to equitable distribution, according to the opinion.

All sums have to be paid within 30 days.
