Dear Carl.

What's left to be said. The Chiefs are stuck in the lowest grade of rebuilding that's even possible. And you decided to hold onto a player who, for all his eminent talents and place in history, will ultimately not do this franchise any good.

So let me ask you, general manager Carl Peterson, if you are by any chance reading this. Would you rather have a decent Draft pick(s) that could materialize into cogs of our future championship runs, or would you forfeit taking any of that to hold on to a player that doesn't want to be here, and won't do our future championship runs any good?

I had mentioned in an earlier entry, breaking down Gonzalez's worth, that he was worth about a 3rd at best, or a 4th and an additional low-rounder. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but there are multiple reports out there that that's exactly what you were offered. And you decided that instead of allowing Kuharich and Herm -- the masterminds behind a pretty strong 2008 draft for this team -- a chance at some good talent in the 3rd or to mine for talent in the mid-rounds and low-rounds, that you were going to sit on your hands and let Gonzalez wallow.

For what?

Leadership? What good does that do you when you're a Bottom 5 team? Groom young leaders, don't depend on your old leaders 'til death do you part.

For what? The emotional punch of Tony finishing his career with an arrowhead on his helmet? Why don't we create new legacies instead of depending on beloved, old ones?

To sell tickets? I don't know where you got the idea that Gonzalez was the only Chiefs player that fans love seeing.

The reliable target in the middle of the field? Sure, Tony's presence on the field cannot be replaced, but this team doesn't need to replace him this season. We're not going anywhere this season, Carl.

Your fanbase has accepted that. You can't, and I don't know why.

And you know where we're at because of this stalling pattern? We have a disgruntled star displeased with our youth movement who is blabbing all over any media outlet who will listen to leverage popular opinion against Carl Peterson and the rest of the Chiefs' front office. We're holding him hostage in a high-profile staredown with several other regimes across the NFL, decreasing the chance that anybody anywhere will blink.

If that sounds familiar to us, it's because that was the Trent Green hostage situation from a year and a half ago. You miraculously succeeded there, but that's largely because you were dealing with a completely incompetent administration.

No sir, in this situation, asking for a 2nd for a 32-year-old who can't help us makes you the incompetent administration. And you are becoming increasingly exposed.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn't a monumental mistake, but it is significant because it illustrates your consistent modus operandi that has punished this franchise far more frequently than not.

Your time with this team, and the NFL, is running out.

Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson gave every indication that his team will not be making a deal in the final hours before the NFL trade deadline of 4 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

"No, nada, nothing, zero," Peterson said, from the fall owners meetings, when asked if he had any possible deals for some of his high-priced veterans. TE Tony Gonzalez, RB Larry Johnson and CB Patrick Surtain have all been rumored to be on the trading block for the Chiefs, who are in rebuilding mode.

Trent Green Should Not Be Allowed to Make Decisions About His Future

You know that saying about a professional athlete getting out of the game on his own terms? Brett Favre, even at 37, looks to be doing that. And Barry Sanders walked away in the prime of his career. Jerry Rice, on the other hand, had to be dragged off the field (still, he’ll certainly be more remembered for his Hall of Fame performances), and that looks like it’ll be Trent Green’s fate too.

After suffering his second serious concussion in as many seasons, Green, 37 years young, still wants to play professional tackle football.

Dolphins quarterback Trent Green has no plans to hang up his cleats despite his second severe concussion in the past 13 months.

Trent Green is due an intervention. First, I’m glad the guys’ not dead, but jeebus, how many times does he have to get knocked out before it dawns on him that maybe it’s time to give football a rest?

Green seems like a swell guy. (He’s Peter King’s IM buddy! By the way, is there anything weirder than two middle-aged men IMing each other? No?) And I suspect his wife and kids would prefer to have a husband/father who doesn’t need the aid of a wheelchair to get around the house.

I understand that his competitive spirit drives him to come back, but his competitive spirit has twice gotten its ass kicked in the past 13 months. It might be time to listen to common sense. Plus, 2008 is the Year of John Beck. If Green wants to return in a backup role, maybe there’s a place for him, but that too seems like a stretch, particularly if Cleo Lemon plays well in Green’s absence.

I hate sounding like one of those preach know-nothings, but I prefer that to seeing Green getting carted off the field once a season. For all that is holy, man, retire and spend time with your family.

What, Trent Green Worry?

The draft came and went with no deal for Trent Green. After months of talk about a possible trade for draft picks, the Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins were unable to make a deal. Carl Peterson, knowing his hard line stance of requesting a 2nd round pick wouldn't work, gave an inch yesterday when he said he would take a 4th round pick for Trent Green. Miami stood firm with their offer of a 6th round pick. A 5th round pick would have been a great compromise except the Dolphins didn't have a 5th rounder this year.

So where does that leave Trent Green? Carl Peterson has told us that Trent Green is the starter as of right now but we all know that is complete bullshit. At least Trent Green's agent isn't beating around the bush:
"Trent's not going to be returning," Steiner said. "They've said Brodie Croyle is going to be the No. 1 or No. 2 quarterback. They brought back Damon Huard. They've told Trent they want to get younger. So the Chiefs determined that, not Trent. That's not going to happen. It's grossly unfair of the Chiefs to keep Trent on their roster."
Correct on all counts Jim Steiner. The Chiefs can't afford to keep Trent Green and his $9.1 million dollar salary cap hit. We didn't get anything for him in the draft. Trent Green will not restructure with the Chiefs and he wants out. Still, I'm proud of Carl Peterson for not budging. Its important to know that when the pressure is on, the Chiefs have set a precedent of not giving into what they perceive to be unfair deals.

Its unfortunate that no deal was made because now the situation has potential to get a little ugly. The Chiefs can release Trent Green which means they will get nothing for him. I think this is the worst possible scenario. Another possibility is still a trade with Miami, probably for future draft picks. Do we take a 5th round pick next year for Trent Green? Since Carl Peterson already showed his hand, we know that we will not get better than a 4th round pick for Trent Green. At this point, I'm satisfied if Trent Green leaves the Chiefs and we get at least a 5th round pick for him. Trent has the leverage in this deal because he will not restructure with the Chiefs and the Chiefs cannot afford to take his salary cap hit. Probably another couple of months of "reporting" on every, single mention of Trent Green's name. This time I'm smarter though. I'm so "Trent Greened out" that I won't be reporting on Trent Green taking a crap or Dolphin's GM Randy Mueller blowing his nose.
