Trevor Pryce Out Longer Than Expected

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much from Trevor Pryce when the Ravens signed him after the 2005 season. He coming off a back injury that limited his productivity in Denver, and he hadn’t had more than four sacks since 2003. Well, all he did was was register 13 sacks in his first year in Baltimore, and made an already kick-ass defense even more so.

The kick-assery has has abated in ‘07, partly because the whole defense has seemingly aged 10 years in four weeks, and because Pryce has been out with a broken wrist. It happened during the Week 2 Jets game and the plan was to have Pryce in time for the October 14 matchup with the Rams. Um, not likely. Instead, it looks like he won’t be ready until after the October 28 bye.

Normally, that wouldn’t be such a big deal — Rex Ryan has a keen sense for plugging holes with random dudes who end up becoming Pro Bowlers. Bart Scott and Adalius Thomas are two names that immediately come to mind. And Thomas, who has gone on to fame and fortune in New England, is another reason the Ravens’ D is skrugglin’.

I don’t know much about Jarret Johnson, but I fully expected him to pick up Thomas’ slack because, well, that’s what Ravens’ defenses do. Johnson didn’t get the memo, apparently, although you can’t blame everything on him. I mean, it’s not his fault Baltimore all of a sudden can’t pressure the quarterback, or cover anybody in the secondary. Hopefully, Pryce will solve the former. Not sure what Ryan will do about the latter, though.
