Oh No! The Sporting News Curse!

Days after gracing the cover of the Sporting News mag, Troy Percival has landed on the DL.

The Tampa Bay Rays closer was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain Thursday after limping off the hill during Wednesday’s 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers.

Percival, who is 1-0 with 14 saves out of 16 opportunities and a 2.95 ERA, underwent an MRI, which found no significant damage. However, the Rays don't want to take an chances with the 38-year-old righty's hammy.

Has Sporting News created its own curse? Ah, no. Troy Percival is just old.

I’ll always remember as a child that my grandmother had 2 loves; her grandchildren and the Detroit Tigers. She was the most faithful Tigers fan that ever lived. Even as she started to age and lived in a Nursing Home, she faithfully watched each game. I’m not exactly sure why she was so faithful to the team. I speculated that maybe she has a crush on Sparky Anderson!

The Detroit Tigers were charter members of the American League in 1894 and there are several stories as to how the Tigers actually got their name. For more on the history of the Detroit Tigers, Click Here.

The Tigers played in the famous Tiger Stadium up until 2000, when they moved on to Comerica Park. Here’s a picture from a game played at Tiger Stadium back in 1940.

Detroit, as a city has struggled in recent years due to a poor economic situation. Because the city is largely based around a struggling American automotive industry, thousands have lost good paying jobs in recent years. The city stil has some great sports teams like the Red Wings, the Pistons and the Lions, making it a great place to visit to catch a game. Next time you visit the motor city, pick up some Detroit Tigers Tickets and catch a game at Comerica Park.

Tampa Bay Rays signed reliever Troy Percival to a two-year contract Friday. His contract will run through 2009 is worth at least $8 million. Aside from that, he’ll have a chance to earn another $4 million-plus in performance incentives.

“You see an organization that’s trying to do everything right, and I wanted to be a part of it,” Percival said after slipping on a Rays jersey in the clubhouse at Tropicana Field.
