Troy Polamalu touchdown called back.

posted by steelerstoday

Anyone who watched the Steelers-Chargers game saw Troy Polamalu make a last second touchdown that would have made the final Score 18-10, and would have allowed the Steelers to cover the spread. Unfortunately, the referees didn’t quite understand the rules (or they were trying to manipulate the spread), because they called the play back. This made the final score 11-10, and prevented the Steelers from covering the spread.

The referees later said that they made a mistake, and that the touchdown should have counted. Here is the play for those of you who missed it.

Steelers Safety Polamalu May Miss Skins Game Due to New Baby

posted by Cartman

Depending on who you listen to, it looks as if Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will not be with the team when they play in Washington Monday night. The reason – Troy is set to become a daddy. The Beaver County Times said today that Troy probably won’t be with the team due to the birth of his new son – Paisos.

When Polamalu was asked directly if the birth of Paisos would make him miss the game, all he said was: “I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.” Polamalu said that his wife Theodora is due at anytime. The team is set to fly to Baltimore to then travel to DC to take on the Skins on Sunday.

Troy did not practice with the team on Friday, and it was stated that he was not there due to “non-football related” reasons, meaning that maybe his wife could be ready to deliver the baby now, and Troy may be able to get back in time with the team to be in Washington.

Steelers Fight Wind and Rain to Top Cleveland 10-6

posted by Cartman

Playing it like it was old school in the AFC Central, the Pittsburgh Steelers rolled into Cleveland to take on the Browns Sunday night with wind and rain being the early victor over anything either team could do on offense. Nevertheless, the Steelers, a team that had beaten the Browns 9 straight entering the Sunday night showdown, had enough once again to top their rivals, beating them 10-6 to move to 2-0.

The night was of little offense, but had a lot of hard hitting and a few critical plays. Maybe the most critical came on the last play of the second quarter with the Steelers up 7-0. From the Steelers 11, Browns QB Derek Anderson threw an awful pass at the three that Troy Polamalu picked off, ending the biggest threat the Browns would have all night. The only scoring from the Browns were two Phil Dawson field goals.

The Steelers, going against the wind, put together their best drive of the game midway through the second quarter. Starting at their own 30, Ben Roethlisberger converted a third down to Santonio Holmes, then was sacked but earned a face mask penalty, putting them on the Browns 49. On a fourth-and-one five plays later, Willie Parker went around end for 13 yards and a first down.

After Roethlisberger hit Holmes to put the Steelers at the 12, three plays later he found Hines Ward running free in the end zone for a 7-0 lead and the only score of the first half and the only TD on the night. The drive was 70 yards in 12 plays and took 6:29. It was on the next drive that Anderson threw the big pick that ended the half.

Jeff Reed kicked a 48-yard field goal in the third quarter, then Dawson hit field goals of 31 and 38 yards to close out the scoring. Browns coach Romeo Crennel showed little faith in his offense when he kicked a field goal from the Steelers 20 on a 4th and 7 with about 3:25 left. The Steelers were able to run out all but the last :30 seconds to ice the game.

Roethlisberger was 12-for-19 for 186 yards and a score. Willie Parker ran for 105 yards on 28 carries. Holmes had five catches for 94 yard, Ward 59 yards on five grabs and the score. The Steelers D held the Browns to 208 yards on offense, Anderson going just 18-for-32 for 166 yards and two picks.

The 2-0 Steelers have a big NFC matchup Sunday as they travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles. The 0-2 Browns will look to get on track as they travel to Baltimore to play the 1-0 Ravens.

Steelers Safety Polamalu Looking to Regain Pro Bowl Form

posted by Cartman

If your a Steelers fan concerned that All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu is going to be eased back into the teams defense after missing most of training camp - have no fear. “We are just going to toss him in,” Mike Tomlin said. “He missed a bunch of (training camp) due to injury. We play on Sunday and he is going to be a part of it. Hopefully, he gets his legs under him pretty quickly.” Troy is maybe the most important player in the Steelers defense along with LB James Harrison, but the team has not been fully able to see what they can do as Polamalu has missed time with a hamstring injury.

He missed five games last season, and there was no doubt the difference you could see on the field with the wild haired Polamalu flying around making plays, as to when he wasn’t out there. The team still had the top ranked defense in the league, but with Troy out there, they can be even more dangerous in 2008.

Polamalu is a master when it comes to rushing to the line of scrimmage and making a QB’s life tough. Without him the team is more limited in what they can run, but with a healthy Troy out there, the team and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will continue to come up with ways for him to make plays. “The reason we can do so many things well is his ability to disguise and be athletic enough to get to where he needs to be,” safety Ryan Clark said. “From a preparation standpoint for offenses, he’s a guy you’ve got to prepare for. There’s only a few guys in the league you have to scheme for, and he’s one of them.”

The Wait is Over - Polamalu Participates in Practice

posted by slewark
Speculation ended yesterday as Troy Polamalu participated in his first practice since being placed on the PUPS list prior to Steelers training camp because of a hamstring injury (the Steelers first practice back home at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex).
Coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that they are waiting to see how Polamalu feels on Wednesday (today) and the days leading up to their next pre-season game against the Vikings on Saturday to decide whether or not he will play.

“It felt good. I think it felt fine,” said Polamalu of his first practice. “It’s nice to get out there and put the pads on and really feel like a part of the team.”
Team members could also tell the difference made by his presence on the practice field.
“Just his presence is amazing,” said cornerback Deshea Townsend. “The main thing for our defense is having another playmaker out there. The more playmakers you can put on the field the better for your defense.
