North Carolina(1) vs. Washington St.(4)

Build Up: The question is, can anyone stop Tyler Hansbrough and UNC(34-2)? That's still to be seen. What can be said for certain is Washington St. is not Mount St. Marys or Arkansas, UNC's first two opponents. Washington State has been just as impressive as UNC if you consider the competition each has had to face. UNC demolished the likes of MSM and ARK by an average of 35 points, to nobodies surprise. Those two squads never had a chance against a superbly gifted basketball team like UNC. Washington St. on the other hand had to play two very tough teams in Winthrop who had won their conference three years straight and a Notre Dame team that was about as popular a pick to beat UNC as anyone out there. Washington St. dismantled Winthrop 71-40, a game which was tied at halftime. Even more impressive, Washington St. routed UND by 20 points, a statement game to say the least for the Cougars (26-8). The key for Washington St. was their smothering defense which shut down the high powered Irish offense all night. So can the Cougars have a repeat performance against UNC? They better hope so because if not they're in for a long night. Washington St., who is led by great guard play will have to match up against one of the most gifted guards in America in Ty Lawson. Tyler Hansbrough is going to get his. Washington State will need to make sure that "his" doesnt end up being 30 and 15. It should be a great battle.

Prediction: UNC won their two games scoring 113 and 108 points while Wash. St. won theirs by scoring 71 and 61 points. Clearly these two teams have complete opposite styles and that usually means whichever squad can impose their will and keep the game at the pace that they desire will probably win. UNC scored less than 80 points only twice this year, it's going to be a tall task for Wash. St. to slow them down and even if they keep UNC to the high 70's I don't think that Washington St. can score enough to pull this one out.
Winner: UNC

Is there any question who the player of the year in college basketball is now?

I am a huge UNC fan, always have been and always will be. In my time following the team, there has never been a more likeable player than Tyler Hansbrough, and today was just another example why. He does everything well on the college level, but that isn’t enough for him. Every game he goes out there and works harder than any other player on the floor. If their was a picture in the dictionary next to the phrases “leaves it all on the court” and ”plays hard every single possession” you would see Tyler Hansbrough.

Hometown standout Wayne Ellington finally got his shooting stroke going to help UNC get in position to avoid a major upset to Virgina Tech. But it was the feverish hustle on both ends of the court and relentless offensive rebounding by Tyler Hansbrough, capped by the 15-foot jumper that he worked so hard on that won that game for UNC. This kid never ceases to amaze me. And I just wanted to dedicate one short post to say something I have said all year…

Tyler Hansbrough is the unanimous player of the year in college basketball this season. There is no debate. No ifs, ands or buts about it. He typifies what college basketball is all about. Not only is he a great player on this level, he is a team guy without an ego, an undeniable leader, and by all accounts a great person. What more does he have to do for the ridiculous speculation that Beasley might win to end?

Absolutely Michael Beasley is having an unbelievable individual year. He is easily the best talent and pro prospect in college basketball. But if he wins the player of the year it would be a sin.

Tyler Hansbrough Goes ‘Psycho T’ on 7′7 Center Kenny George

“Everybody on the team is like, ‘Who’s going to try to dunk [on George - the 7′7, 360 pound center from North Carolina-Asheville]?’” Hansbrough said. “It definitely was in the back of my mind.”

From the back of his mind straight to the top play on Sportscenter and a memorable poster that will be coveted by every die-hard UNC fan. That ferocious throw-down is exactly why Tyler Hansbrough is appropriately nicknamed ‘Psycho T”. This quote and that play are two of the many reasons why Hansbrough is my favorite college basketball player.

“I just felt like I could drive around him,” Hansbrough said.

Not just drive around him but rise above the tallest player in college basketball and bang on him with deuce-hands. Kenny George said himself that he hadn’t been dunked on in the last 3 years. That speaks volumes about a player most scouts say is not a superior athlete and who struggles against taller/longer defenders. Hansbrough’s sheer determination is what drives him to be as good as he is, regardless of the naysayers. His will is also what keeps him from becoming another hyped-up college ball player that never lives up to the lofty expectations (i.e. Roy Hibbert).

The front runner for the national player-of-the-year award is having the best season of his career through all the hype. Hansbrough is averaging nearly a double-double at 21.8ppg and 9.8rpg. His is also shooting 57.6 % from the field and 80% from the line, all career highs.

The fact that he is an NBA mid / late first round pick by every scout or mock draft I can find is a travesty. With the abundance of slackers, bad attitudes, “great potential” flops (i.e. Kwame Brown) and thugs with off - the - court problems in the NBA today you would think GMs would be falling over themselves at the chance to land a player like Hansbrough. A player with tremendous work-ethic, unquestionable passion, a relentless rebounder and actually becoming a polished scorer. Best of all he’s got character; he’s the guy everyone on the team respects and wants to play with.

I don’t know about you, but here at the Recliner GM we will gladly take him!
