Thiago Silva vs Lyoto Machida at UFC 94

posted by slanier
The UFC’s light-heavyweight title picture will become a lot clearer on Jan. 31.

UFC President Dana White confirmed this past Saturday that top contenders and undefeated 205-pounders Lyoto Machida (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and Thiago Silva (13-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will meet at UFC 94.

The event takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Machida-Silva could be the night’s co-main event to the headline bout between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn.

The Machida-Silva fight was originally scheduled for the Oct. 25 UFC 89 event. However, as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, Silva was forced out of the event after sustaining a back injury.

Silva has had an impressive run in the UFC since his May 2007 debut with the organization. His four wins over James Irvin, Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes have all come via stoppage — three by TKO and one by submission.

Machida, meanwhile, has fought since May, when he topped Tito Ortiz for a unanimous-decision victory. It was his fifth consecutive victory in the UFC, four of which have come gone to decision.

Machida also holds wins over UFC veterans Stephan Bonner, Rich Franklin, B.J. Penn and Vernon White in bouts held in various worldwide MMA organizations.

For complete UFC 94 coverage, including the latest rumored fight card, stay tuned to UFC Rumors section of MMAjunkie.com.

Daily Sports Select : The Top 5 Fighters Who Could Challenge Brock Lesnar

posted by vjrabid

Brock Lesnar's beatdown of Randy Couture sent shockwaves throughout the MMA world. Here was Lesnar, in just his fourth fight, dropping a legend straight on his back. It was obvious that no one in the UFC's heavyweight division will be challenging Lesnar for a while. Lesnar's combination of talent, size, athleticism and balls is too much for anyone, including Frank Mir, who beat him previously.

That said, taking into account that non-UFC fighters won't get to fight UFC fighters anytime soon, here are The Top 5 Fighters Who Could Challenge Brock Lesnar :

5. Frank Mir : I honestly don't believe anyone in the UFC's weak heavyweight division can take Brock Lesnar, including Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Nogueira's chin and come-from-behind submissions are legendary, but he is beat way beyond his years, that chin will give someday, and it could very well come against Lesnar, if Nogueira gets past Frank Mir in the eliminator.

I put Mir on this list only because he has already beaten Lesnar. However, Lesnar's inexperience and sloppiness played a big part, and I think if a rematch were to happen, Lesnar would win via TKO.

Probability of winning : Extremely low

4. Josh Barnett : Barnett has a dynamic fighting style, great fighting spirit and a wicked submissions game, but tends to trade too much standing up.

Probability of winning : Low

3. Antonio Silva : Silva is the non-UFC answer to Brock Lesnar. He is about the same size, but Silva brings a kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skill set to the fight. If he can pummel Lesnar with his punches and low kicks or control Lesnar on the ground, then he has a solid chance.

Probability of winning : Moderate

2. Andrei Arlovski : Arlovski is a great athlete, but in the lean and mean mold. What Arlovski is is a great boxer, kickboxer and sambo artist. In fact, Arlovski hits harder than Lesnar, never mind that he can throw combinations like a heavyweight boxer. His low kicks are also devastating, so his all-around striking could really destroy Lesnar in a standup battle.

But Arlovski has shown he can be knocked out. Also, having a major strength disadvantage against Lesnar, can Arlovski bust out his sambo moves when if he gets taken to the ground?

Probability of winning : 50/50

1. Fedor Emelianenko : Fedor has great lateral movement and is always on the move. Moreover, he has the uncanny ability to punch an opponent's jaw with lightning quickness and drop him. He has another uncanny ability to not waste energy applying the wrong moves at the wrong time. For example, he doesn't expend himself trying to make groundfighting a full submissions battle. He often submits opponents after softening them up through ground-and-pound.

How would this translate in a fight against Lesnar? Either Fedor would drop Lesnar, pound him and submit him or if he has to clinch, he would start with some dirty boxing, then trip him, pound him and submit him. Fedor is always shifting his tactics within a fight.

Probability of winning : Likely

More Brock Lesnar!
How Randy Couture bought a one-way ticket to retirement from Brock Lesnar

Were Brock Lesnar's 30 Punches After Randy Couture Went Down In UFC 91 Too Many? UFC Prez Dana White Says Yes

posted by carnitas

When we were watching the UFC 91 match between Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture, we chuckled as Couture tried to lift and pull a behemoth like Lesnar to the ground early in the match. What wasn't so high-larious was when Lesnar got Couture to the ground and began whaling on his face, resulting in the end of the match. Even UFC head honcho Dana White thought that ref Mario Yamasaki should've called it a few seconds sooner to prevent Couture losing a few more inches of properly functioning brain tissue.

UFC President Dana White said as he watched the barrage he thought, The ref [Mario Yamasaki] was going, Eh, is [Couture] OK? Mario was trying to give him time [to recover]. Theres a fine line between that and [allowing] too many punches. When I saw Randy go back down, I thought we had crossed that line.

Do you think he did? Watch the clip after the jump and let us know if you would've stopped the fight earlier or continue, as Couture put it, letting him eat leather.

UFC 91: White says Lesnar's barrage on Couture 'crossed the line' [LA Times]
