AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 11,
from Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center with 92 people on board.

AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 77,
from Washington to Los Angeles, crashed into the Pentagon with 64 people aboard.

UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 175,
from Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, was the second hijacked plane to strike the World Trade Center, plowing into the south tower. Two pilots, seven flight attendants and 56 passengers were on board.

UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93
from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California, crashed in rural southwest Pennsylvania, with 45 people on board.

A Tribute to the Heroes of United Airlines Flight 93 - 7 Years Later

Writing a tribute to the victims in one of the worse tragedies in our nation’s history, brought me back quickly to that day of September 11, 2001. I am a trader who works out of her home. That day, as I did normally, I brought my cup of coffee to my desk and I turned on one of my financial news networks. Around 8:50 am, casually glancing at the TV screen, I saw a shocked look on the face of the commenter. I turned up the volume only to hear the awful news of a jet crashing through the World Trade Center in New York. Little did I know, this would change my life and others around me forever.

As with many people who heard this tragic news, thoughts resonated through my mind of any relatives or friends of mine that could be in the building. Fortunately for me, my relatives didn’t work in the building. Nevertheless, the feeling I had in the aftermath made me empathize with those that did as if they were related to me.

There were many heroes that day risking their lives to save others around the World Trade Center, yet one of the most fascinating group of heroes were those on United Airlines Flight 93.

A Timeline for United Flight 93

On the morning of September 11, 2001, around 8am, United Airlines Flight 93 with 11,300 gallons of fuel on board was pushed back from the gate at Newark International Airport- 37 people aboard bound for San Francisco. They were 1 minute behind schedule but will sit on the ground for 41 minutes before taking off.

Around 8:42 AM, Flight 93 takes off.

Approximately, 9 AM, Flight 93, receives a warning from United Airlines operations that there is a potential threat to a “cockpit intrusion.”

Approximately, 9:10 AM, it is believed that Flight 93 was hijacked.

Approximately, 9:29 AM, Air traffic controllers hear from Flight 93, “Get out of there!”, and then there was a sound like people fighting. A Few minutes later, a strange voice with a Middle Eastern accent announces on the PA: “Ladies and gentlemen, here it’s the captain. Please sit down. Keep remaining sitting. We have a bomb aboard.” They incorrectly thought that it was Delta Flight 1989, also a 767 loaded for fuel which took off from Boston heading to LA. At this time Jeremy Glick, a passenger on Flight 93, called his wife and described the hijackers and was informed about the attacks in New York.

Approximately 9:35 AM, Flight 93 was near Cleveland Ohio, climbs unexpectedly and then makes a 180 turn toward Washington. The controllers order Delta Flight 1989 to change its course to avoid a collision with Flight 93.

Approximately 9:40 AM, contact with Flight 93 was lost.

Just after that - calls from Flight 93 were being made from passengers’ cell phones.

Mark Bingham, 31 of San Francisco, called his mother. “Mom, this is Mark Bingham. I want to let you know that I love you. I’m calling from the plane. We’ve been taken over. There are three men that say they have a bomb.”

Todd Beamer, 32, tried to use his credit card on the plane’s phone to make a phone call to his wife. The call was directed to a customer service rep, Lisa Jefferson, who was his emotional and spiritual support in those last moments of his life. He said that the pilot and copilot were injured, 2 hijackers were in the cockpit, 1 was guarding 10 people in 1st class and another was guarding 27 passengers at the rear of the plane. He told Lisa that they have voted to storm the hijackers and the supervisor hears before he hangs up “Are you guys ready? Let’s roll.”

Within one hour from the time United Airlines, Flight 93 was hijacked; it was all over - approximately 10:06 AM - Flight 93 crashes into a field near Pittsburgh, PA, still 100 miles from Washington. It had, experts believe, flipped over on its back and speared into the ground at about 575 mph. NORAD states that the aircraft protecting Washington did not leave position and would have intercepted as it got closer.

Todd Beamer, 32, an East Coast sales account manager for Oracle, left behind a pregnant wife and two sons. His famous words, “Let’s roll” was a catchphrase that became a symbol of true heroism. Lisa Beamer, Todd’s wife, wrote a book in 2003 called, “Let’s Roll, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage.” This is a book before and after the crash of United Flight 93. If you recall. Today, Lisa has remarried.

After posting my picks for the upcoming NFL weekend I realized that I had neglected something more important than sports. For 6 years now the United States military has been serving over seas. This is a direct result of what happened on this day in 2001. Because of the many views on what has expired I will leave my own political sense out of the article. I would, however, like to take a moment to look at what happened in New York, DC, and that empty field in Pennsylvania.
8:45 American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center9:03 United Airlines Flight 175, a second plane, crashes. This time into the South Tower.Both flights were taken over by hijackers9:43 American Airlines Flight 77 is hijacked and crashes into the Pentagon. The White House is evacuated.10:05 The South Tower collapses10:10 United Airlines Flight 93, also hijacked, crashes in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, southeast of Pittsburgh.10:28 The North Tower collapses4:10 Building 7 of the World Trade Center catches fire5:20 Building 7 collapses
Throughout the hours and minuutes that this timeline covers, 5 ships and 2 carriers were immediately manned by the men and women at Naval Air Station Oceana and Naval Base Norfolk.
Overall there were 2,974 fatalities. These included all the passengers on the flight, individuals inside the buildings, and the men and women of the emergency response units who fought to save the lives of all those involved in the attacks. Tonight take a moment to think about all of the people in the hijacked planes, reflect on the heroes who rose to the challenge and responded to the needs of other, and no more how you feel about the war be thankful that people are putting themselves in harms way for you and your country as they have been called to do.
Below is a list of all those who died on 9/11. We will continue to remember you and your families, and we thank you for your brave heart and unfortunate sacrifice. You are the true HEROES of the United States!
