I know this real decent guy. He is the kind that surprises his girlfriend with weekends at Bed and Breakfasts, and does not insist that girlfriend go to a blood and guts flick each time he agrees to endure a rom-com. But he absolutely detests Valentine's Day--refuses to put out for that bouquet of roses, which have magically tripled in value in the last three days.

For him, and I think actually most men, Valentine's Day is just a commercial ploy developed by Hallmark's and the florist cartel.

But gee whiz, what holiday hasn't been commercialized? Only Martin Luther King Day has yet to go commercial, which is the reason no one knows how to celebrate the day, and it just doesn't feel like a "real holiday."

Valentine's Day is certainly no more commercial than Christmas or Easter. The only difference is that a tad bit of Jesus is thrown into those days, along with a totem rabbit and a fat elf.

When it comes right down to it, every holiday capitalizes on our desire to buy unnecessary crap. And it is the Christmas madness that actually keeps the American economy afloat. In these days of recession and stimulus packages, it is unpatriotic not to blow some serious money this Thursday.

Besides, guys should be glad they have the freedom to buy a saccharine sweet card and give into floral extortion. Valentine's Day gifts, including red roses, have been banned this year by our friends in Saudi Arabia. In fact, anything red has been temporarily banned. The Student Islamic Association in India is demanding an end to the day, because it is just more Western values corrupting their fine society. The Lahore College for Women in Pakistan has prohibited Valentine's Day celebrating.

Islamic society is so depressing and humorless. We don't want to be like them. Even though most guys can fulfill their needs by eating some food and getting a blow job, it doesn't hurt to buy a heart shaped carton of those waxy chocolates.

Some guys like to buy their sweetheart underwear. I don't think this is very good Valentine's Day present .Everyone knows the game plan here. How would they like it if their lady bought them a vibrator? And in most cases we are not really going to look as smoking hot, in that heart shaped g-string, as the Victoria's Secret model you saw in the Super Bowl ad. On undies, a gift card is the way to go, and it is truly appreciated, and will result in a purchase which will be used more than one embarrassing time.

Now you are probably aware that my hardcore feminist friends hate Valentine's Day almost as much as the mullahs. They wish to change it into V-Day, on which we will recognize and talk endlessly about violence against women, and our suppression by the patriarchy. How utterly depressing. I do not wish to stuff a pair of stainless steel dentures up my coochie and catch a performance of The Vagina Monologues.

Valentines Day is about receiving teddy bears and shiny rocks—not vaginas. There are plenty of other days to castrate those men who are deserving. I also find the Monologues kind of offensive--not because they exuberantly express female sexuality--that is great. I just don't think it is nice to always dub men "the enemy."And though it is not my cup of mocha , heterosexuality should not be equated with violence. Besides, glorification of statutory rape is not my thing.

Of course, those who are single and alone, often get pretty irritated about all the festivities. Everyone always talks about mean man-hating lesbians, but the most confirmed man-haters I know are straight girls who have recently been dumped by some two-timing ass--and they have no use for Valentine's Day.

Maybe the best way for lonely guys to celebrate the day is to go out and get blotto. And I don't think the working girls take the day off. However ladies who find themselves in the Lonely Hearts Club should just order a pizza and throw on Sleepless in Seattle, and maybe listen to a couple of Todd Rundgren tunes:

It will be quite depressing—but sweet.

So all and all, I think everyone should quit knocking Valentine's Day.

Its all about love.

Something there is never enough of.

Little Tokens Of Appreciation

We all get busy in our day to day lives and sometimes this means you don’t spend as much time showing your partner as much affection as you and they would like. This affection can come in many forms by spending time together, being romantic, passionate, or just simply sitting and staring into each others eyes. As everyone can be busy and if you are raising children it is even easier to get distracted and forget to show your partner how much they mean to you and what they mean to you.

Steal a moment here and there and find the little things is a suggestion that I have. Take a look at some of the things that I am going to list below, if your partner does any of these things for you then take these as those signs and gestures, if you have not done anything like this for a while then steal some moments from a day and do them to show appreciation and affection for your partner.

Warm your partners favorite beverage and have it ready in the morning without being asked

Simple, but I try to have my partner’s hot tea ready and brewed for when she comes downstairs first thing in the morning. If this saves just two minutes of waiting for tea to heat up and brew, then I have done my job.

If you watch TV together even for a short while give your partner a massage

One of my favorite things is to rub my wife’s feet and legs while we watch TV together. Even though we are both unwinding and watching TV, I am giving physical attention to her and relieving some tension and strain while we just mellow and veg together.

Give your partner a random kiss or hug

Don’t go overboard, but do just spontaneously come up to your partner and give them a hug or a kiss. Show them how you feel about them with this one gesture and put your emotion into it.

Offer to assist your partner with anything and let them take a break

Sometimes the best way to show affection is to relieve your partner of their workload and let them sit down or take a nap for a bit. On days where I am not terribly busy, I will try to take a lunch break and offer to watch the little one while she steals a nap in the bedroom.

Leave a small note around the house

This one I have done for a while but we have a white board magnet on the refrigerator to write chores and messages. I often when completing the chores will leave a love poem or message so my lady can read it before writing a new list of things that need to be done around the house.

These are just some suggestions and a small handful of things that I try to do to convey some appreciation and affection for my partner. This message works both ways ladies should do little things to show affection and appreciation for their partner just as men should show their ladies. These rules apply for everyone and are even more essential if you and your partner don’t spend much time together.

It's that time again! Just when you are getting over Christmas, the New Year party and football playoffs, here comes Valentine's day. A day that strikes fear in the hearts of men, pours love in the hearts of women, and makes singles cry or rejoice that they don't have to put forth anything.

If you are tired with the boring old flowers and candy routine, I have some Valentine's day ideas that might interest you and put some spark into that relationship.

Another option would be to try getting a Valentine's Day Gift Basket for your spouse or loved one. There are several below that are interesting.

Propose! Just kidding, although romantic it's too cliched and women would expect it more then than any other day most likely.

This day is mainly for the women so i'll lean more towards that aspect. Men are simple and are more worried about pleasing the woman so here we go...

Jewelry! There is only a few women that I have known that didn't actually wear it, and of course the more expensive the better and better the meaning behind it.

Romantic dinner. Guys, no drive thrus or take out unless you both agree, but a nice dinner out at a classy place with candlelight and maybe dancing will melt her heart. Bonus points goes to the guys who go out and buy her a nice dress to wear for the occasion.

Pampering. Ladies love to be pampered. Whether it would be to send them to a spa, pedicure, manicure, massage or even just a makeover. Anything to make them look or feel good.

Surprise her at work. Bring a dozen roses to her while she is at work. It would make her feel really special and important in front of her co-workers. Either that or stalked if you aren't really a couple.

Whatever you do, don't get her unthoughtful gifts like cleaning items or diet stuff. That's like saying "hey fatso clean the house". Unless you are in to that kind of thing.

Valentines Day Massacre Redefined

Wikipedia and other reference and resource materials have a definition of the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre that will soon need to be updated. It must now share it's infamy.

Seventy-Nine (79) years to the day after the Scar Face Gang committed the most infamous massacre in American history with the cold blooded killing of seven (7) members of the Bugsy Moran Gang while their Mob Boss, Al Capone, lay untouchable in Florida, another young man made his unforgettable mark in the State of Illinois while his diabetic father (unlike Capone) sat unknowing in the sunshine state.

Dateline: St Valentine's Day, 14 February 2008, Dekalb, Illinois

An hour or so and just over Sixty (60) miles due west of Chicago

a skinny, troubled, Twenty-Eight (28) year old, Steven Kazmierczak,

reminiscent of a Clint Eastwood spaghetti movie, stepped from behind a curtain at a lecture hall holding more than One Hundred and Fifty (150) students and speaking not a word opened fire gangland style on the unsuspecting class. Kazmierczak had masked his inner demons with his friendly exterior.

Unlike the Chicago gangs of Capone's era the six (6) people killed by Kazmierczak were engaged no unlawful activity. They were running no bordellos, were not guns for hire, and the prohibition period of our nation's history with it's speakeasies was but a faint memory when the alumnus ended the career of six (6) of his fellow Huskies before they began.

Mid-afternoon, St Valentine's Day, 2008, while the Tennessee Mountain Man finalized celebration plans for Cupid's favorite day, a former NIU sociology graduate student, dressed in a long black coat and carrying a shotgun and two (2) hand guns was practicing the reverse of Cupid's love magic. The gunman himself was enrolled in classes at the university just one short year earlier.

The curriculum of the Computer man, in years past, while he studied law and law enforcement sciences included the Chicago underground and the lawless gangland days. While it was an interesting period to study, it must have been a fearful time for the residents of the day. And, nothing in the original St Valentine's Day Massacre prepared one for the NIU Massacre of 2008.

Not even the earlier high school and college shootings over the last few years had prepared anyone to foresee and prevent the NIU massacre. This was, after all, perpetrated by one of their own... an outstanding student by all accounts.

Having apparently spent the night before in a Travel Lodge Motel near the college, Kazmierczak boosted his nerve and smoked his brain with alcohol and cigarettes as evidenced by the beer cans and cigarette butts scattered about the room. The NIU gunman then gathered the tools to apply the trade for which he would be remembered and made his way to the school.

Leaving much more ammunition behind in his motel room secluded in a duffel bag he left many more questions than could be answered. Adding to the suspense, he apparently left no suicide note which police have come to expect to help them determine the suspect's motive and state of mind. The totality of the experience makes one ask what he planned for an encore and why he
suddenly decided to end it when and where he did by taking his own life.

Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old senior, responsible for the massacre at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia almost a year earlier in April, 2007, like Steven Kazmierczak, was a young man with many demons... you may simply call them mental issues, but they are demons that haunt men day and night until some break under the assault.

Both of these men, like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, before them, who embarked on the 1999 shooting rampage at Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado, have turned our educational campuses into modern day shooting galleries.

The Tennessee Mountain Man would not want to be a student on America's campuses today. Back in the day police officers and properly licensed citizens, including students, carried side arms at all times including in banks, schools, restaurants, bars, court houses, etc.

It is time we stop trying to be ostriches. It is time we get our heads out of the sand or where ever we have shoved them and reverse the course of only criminals, those with mental issues, and individuals with the propensities of the Harris', the Klebold's, the Cho's, and the Kazmierczak's carrying weapons in our society.

Guns are neither good nor bad. They are inanimate objects. But, when guns are outlawed anywhere, only the criminals or the criminally insane (by definition) will bear arms.
