posted by sumantasid

Ani Lorak (Ukrainian: Ані Лорак) (born Karolina Myroslavivna Kuiek, Ukrainian: Кароліна Мирославівна Куєк, 27 September 1978, Kitsman, Ukraine, then USSR) is a Ukrainian pop singer.

She appeared to be a strong front-runner to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest on two occasions, but ultimately failed to be selected. Her narrow defeat in the 2005 national pre-selection competition was particularly controversial, given that the winners GreenJolly had, unlike her, not had to qualify for the final by winning one of the fifteen preliminary heats.

Lorak represented Ukraine at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Shady Lady and came in 2nd place being defeated by Dima Bilan from Russia. She won the «Press Award Eurovision Song Contest and the «Artistic Award» for her performance.
She is married to Murat Nalçaçıoğlu from Turkey who is also her manager.

Karolina developed the desire to become a singer as early as the age of four. At that time she had already decided what she wanted to achieve in life. Karolina often performed at various school vocal competitions. In 1992, she took part in the popular contest 'Pervotsvit' and was the winner. It was here where she met her ex-producer Yuriy Falyosa. As a result, at the age of 14 she signed her first professional contract.

Karolina became known as Ani Lorak in March 1995 when she took part in a contest at the television program "Morning Star" in Moscow, Russia. There was a Russian singer with the same name already enrolled in that competition. In order to save the situation, Karolina had to invent a stage name. Ani Lorak is the name Karolina read backwards.

Ani Lorak moved to Kiev in 1995. By that time her name was well known in Ukrainian show business. She became even more popular after winning the "Big Apple Music 1996 Competition" in New York, U.S.. She became "Discovery of the Year" at the popular Ukrainian festival "Tavria Games" in 1996. The same year she released her first album "I Want to Fly".

1997 was a year full of hard work for Ani, as she continued recording new songs. Her two videos "The Model" and "My God" were filmed and the latter became a soundtrack to the movie "The Right to Choose".

In the spring of 1998 her new video "I will be back" was shot and in December Lorak's second album "I will be back" was released. Mastering of this album took place in New York. Simultaneously her two music videos "Oh my love" and "A Stranger's City" were filmed to accompany her new album.

At the outset of 1999 she started extensive touring, performing in the US, France, Germany, Hungary, and her concerts took place in every major city of Ukraine. In 1999 she earned the title of the Honored Artist of Ukraine (Zasluzhena Artystka Ukrayiny).

In the spring of 2000 Ani Lorak recorded the soundtrack for an advert for the Chocolate "Korona" at the London studio "Astoria". Here, the singer met world-reknowned British composers Burrie Guard and Josh Phillips. Also, in London Lorak recorded new songs exclusively for the European music scene.

In 2004-2005 Ani Lorak was a UN Good Will Ambassador in Ukraine for HIV/AIDS.

In 2008, she was chosen to be the Ukranian singer in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, singing the song Shady Lady in the second semi final on May 22, 2008.

Lorak is a face of Schwarzkopf & Henkel in Ukraine.

Eurovision Song Contest 2007: Not impressed with the weiners

Singing was excellent, especially the lead singer.. but the tennis shoes? the androgyny? the un-tucked shirt?
It's Pat! (reference the Saturday Night Live character from the 90s)
Look at me! I'm unattractive, I've stopped trying, the women behind me look beautiful, but my voice redeems my horrible appearance.. Uh… No. At least slick your hair back, tuck in your shirt and wear a pair of black wingtip shoes. You want to look like a man that's your business, but winning the competition looking like a slob- that's just too much for me to stay quiet about. Even the glasses are annoying... I'm in an exceptionally cruel mood.

The Eurovision Song Contest: The Winners

posted by Avenger44
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), in which participating countries each submit a song to be performed on live television; then proceed to cast votes for the other countries' songs, in order to find the most popular song in the competition. Each country participates via one of their national EBU-member television stations, whose task it is to select a singer and a song to go forward to represent the country in the international competition.

The Contest has been broadcast every year since its inauguration in 1956, and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most-watched non-sporting events in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally.

The Contest is historically known for being mainly a bastion of formulaic, orchestrated pop music. However it has featured a vast, diverse array of songs, including such musical genres as Arab, Balkan, Celtic music, Dance, Folk, Israeli, Greek, Latin, Metal, Nordic, Pop-rap, Rock, and Turkish.

Over the years, the Song Contest has grown from a mere televisual experiment into an international institution of mammoth proportions. Most countries in Europe have taken part at least once during the Contest's history, and such is the magnitude and scale of the Contest that the word "Eurovision" is one of the few household names to be recognised across an entire continent.
