SOURCE:(V) "XXX: The Return of Xander Cage" is getting off the ground with "Terminator Salvation" scribes Michael Ferris and John Brancato in early talks to write a script that will reunite Vin Diesel with director Rob Cohen.

The writing team, whose credits include "Terminator 3" and the upcoming Jonathan Mostow-directed "Surrogates," began talks after pitching their take last Friday for a new installment in the action series to Columbia Pictures presidents Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad.

Producer Joe Roth got Diesel and Cohen to agree to a reteam earlier this year (Daily Variety, Sept. 15). Col moved quickly to lock up the property, getting first look because of its past relationship with "XXX" generator Revolution Studios. Diesel and Cohen teamed on the 2002 original, which starred Diesel as an extreme sports enthusiast drafted by the government for a dangerous mission.

Diesel and Cohen sat out the first sequel, "XXX: State of the Union," which starred Ice Cube and was directed by Lee Tamahori.

The ramp-up on the project underscores increased appetite by studios for branded material. Diesel, who bowed out of two "The Fast and the Furious" sequels (save for a cameo in the second installment), reteamed with original co-star Paul Walker for a fourth film. Vin Diesel Wants To Have 12 Kids!

Actor VIN DIESEL is so thrilled to be a first time dad, he wants to give his four-month-old daughter eleven siblings. The action star's girlfriend Paloma Jimenez gave birth to a baby girl - whose name is unknown - back in June this year and DIESEL loves being a dad. The 41-year-old actor claims his role in kids movie 'The Pacifier' kickstarted his paternal instincts, and he can't shake them off: 'That's how the whole damn thing started. You work with those babies too long, and then I said, 'It is time.' Also VIN (who plays muscle car driver extraordinaire, Dominic Torretto) will be directing a 20-minute prequel to the upcoming Fast and Furious movie. There aren't many details on the short, but starring alongside DIESEL will be Michelle Rodriguez, who will reprise her role as Letty, and Sung Kang will also be returning as Han. DIESEL did not provide any details about the story for the short, but for those of you who are well versed in the world of Fast and Furious, you can probably guess that it will act as a tie-in to bring together the events of the second and third films. It hardly comes as a surprise when our worst suspicions are confirmed: Babylon A.D. is nothing more than a Children of Men ripoff on steroids.

Story
For whatever reason, the world in 2019 is in total disarray. Maybe it has to do with terrorism. Or global warming. Anyway, anarchy rules in Eastern Europe, which is where we find exiled American mercenary Toorop (Vin Diesel). Desperate to go home, Toorop agrees to transport a strange young woman from a Mongolian convent to New York City. In a film that been hacked to pieces and makes little sense, this is the first thing that strikes you as being really dumb. Why hire a moron to protect the naif responsible for what her religious order is promoting as a “miracle in the making”? Toorop not only places Aurora’s (Melanie Thierry) life in danger by making dangerous unscheduled stops, but he habitually loses her in crowds or allows her to be whisked off by those who want to stop her from reaching her destination. Thank goodness Aurora’s got her chaperon, Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh), to watch her back. It isn’t until we get to New York that all is revealed about the girl, her powers, and her purpose. By then, Babylon A.D.’s already stolen everything it possibly can from The Fifth Element, The Transporter, Minority Report, and even Diesel’s xXx. Upset with his film being yanked away from him, director Mathieu Kassovitz has publicly dismissed Babylon A.D. as playing like “a bad episode of 24.” Sadly, this futuristic clunker isn’t even that good.

Acting
Toward the end of Babylon A.D., Vin Diesel’s informed that he’s just woken up after being in a coma for five days. It’s hard to know when exactly the hulking, grimacing musclehead slipped into unconsciousness. He practically sleepwalks through the havoc which results in him being put back together like The Six Million Man. You get the impression Diesel knew from the get-go that Babylon A.D.was a disaster in the making and simply decided to save his energy and emotion for a more worthy endeavor--like perhaps [yawn] next year’s Fast & Furious. With Diesel bailing on us, all eyes turn to Yeoh. You put Yeoh in an action film for one reason and one reason only: to beat the crap out of anyone trying to damage “the package.” So what’s the point of casting Yeoh if she’s given the minimal of opportunities to ply her craft? If you really want a woman of peace, get Judi Dench. Or Charlotte Rampling. Then again, Rampling’s the only one having any fun as she hams it up to no end as the malevolent leader of Aurora’s religious order. As for Thierry, she fails to exude any of the mystery that surrounds the woman destined to save the planet. Oh, and that is an unrecognizable Gerald Depardieu as the man responsible for hiring Diesel. Guess he owed someone a favor.

Direction
While its refreshing for a director to slam the studio that hijacked his new film, you can’t help but wonder whether Kassovitz’s AMC interview was intended to deflect all the blame away from him for this ticking time bomb. Fox reportedly took control of Babylon A.D. to pare it down to 93 minutes and secure a teen-friendly PG-13 rating. Maybe the 15 minutes of excised scenes would have explained why Eastern Europe descended into chaos and what Diesel did to prompt the United States to declare him a terrorist. Maybe the film would have ended with a bang and not a thud. But everything else about the obviously choppy Babylon A.D. comes across as being so uninspired. The Paris-born director, who made his name with 1995’s La Haine, shows no imagination when it comes to staging fistfights, shootouts, and car chases. Even cool little moments that should wow you—such as a submarine breaking through the ice—are executed with workman-like competence. And, rather than put any thought into the design of the film’s sets, he borrows liberally from the cityscapes that made Blade Runner and Children of Men look so distinctive. By the time Diesel et al. arrive in New York, and things get really silly and incoherent, Kassovitz’s clearly given up on Babylon A.D. At the very least, Babylon A.D. and Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion should serve as warnings to talented European directors that Hollywood will wine you, dine you, only to later stab you in the back. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, a mercenary (Vin Diesel) takes on job of transporting human. Babylon A.D. Background based on French novelist Maurice G. Dantec’s Babylon Babies - which had lot to do with the political implications of biotechnology, along with the disintegration of USSR superpower into futuristic anarchy.

The Judgment of This action - futuristic adventure epic is to become terrific set piece sequences, but never quite manages to sustain the drama as it gets lost in its meandering quasi religious plotline.

The special effects are still pretty impressive, but then for some reason the film limps into a dull by-the-numbers car chase that does nothing to add to the futuristic mayhem.

That isn’t to say that there isn’t a good deal of sci-fi mayhem and fun to be had along the way - purely which the elements never really all gel together effectively. Based on the 1999 French sci-fi novel Babylon Babies, the film’s directed with real pace and style by French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz (he made the Halle Berry chiller Gothika), and features a suitably muscular return to form for a nicely steely Vin Diesel, who has just the right amount of monosyllabic machismo for the oddly-named mercenary Thoorop.

The early section is especially impressive as Thoorop and his sultry cargo of enigmatic beauty Aurora and Rebecca (Michelle Yeoh ) battle their way through a war-torn and impoverished Eastern Europe before finally taking a submarine to Alaska.

The pace drops off once they hit the West and a clumsily-handled semi-romance between Thoorop and Aurora raises its ugly head. Throw into the mix cloning, genetics, gun battles and religious cults and the film spirals into a bit of chaos as they hit a Blade Runner-style New York.

Here’s Short Story Line:

Vin Diesel as multinational mercenary Toorop, arrives on the New Serbia scene with bad attitude, as if he’d just finished hanging out on a Brooklyn street corner. Toorop mastermind entrusted to Gorsky (Gerard Depardieu), with a mysterious mission to deliver convent Aurora (Melanie Thierry), along with her Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh), to the Big Apple by way of some cross-continental tundra’s.

More travelogue and hi-tech tall tale than terror ride, Babylon A.D. does dazzle on occasion with its apocalyptically minded explosive action sequences. But they seem at times to be out of synch, as if assembled by a dyslexic editing crew.Then there’s the matter of the enigmatic Aurora with all sorts of suspicious superpowers, including those associated with virginal fertility, whom a devious high priestess religious not played by Charlotte Rampling schemes to snatch. Though Toorop’s highly efficient but basically could care fewer outlooks on life is pretty contagious, and makes it all hardly seem to matter. So when Diesel lets on that he doesn’t like to get involved, you can’t be sure if he’s talking about his on screen clientele, or this movie.
