Wanda Sykes has been doing comic acting and standup comedy for more than 20 years. In a field that is very difficult for both women and people of color (check out the exclusive of the late night hosts) she has been among the most successful. For the most part, she has kept her personal business to herself.

But with a majority of California residents supportING Proposition 8 on Nov. 4 to make same-sex marriage illegal, Wanda Sykes feels that she needs to speak out. She has made public that she was married on Oct. 25 to another woman, before voters had a chance to tell her via Proposition 8 that they perceive she is a criminal for how she chooses to lead her personal life. Thus she joins Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donnell and other women who have joined this still-fairly-new American civil rights campaign.

Wanda Sykes has always been quite blunt and even profane, ever since she first took to a stand-up stage 21 years in Washington, D.C. Well, so are a lot of the fellows who do comedy, and not just the ones on HBO. Check out ABC's mainstream Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted a roast of Shaquille O'Neal that's available on video. Wanda Sykes is actually somewhat tame, compared to a number of her peers.

Ms. Sykes comes from what seem to be quite a straight-laced family from Portsmouth, Va. Her father was an Army colonel who worked in the Pentagon and her mother was a banker, and she graduated from Hampton University. Therefore, the conduct of her personal life has involved some pain, the same for virtually anyone in the United States who discovers that they are attracted to people of the same sex.

There was a rally in Las Vegas over the weekend to protest the Proposition 8 verdict of the California voters. Why this rally was in Nevada instead of in California, who knows?

I’ve said it. I’ve said it.

Las Vegas, NV -– “Evan Almighty” actress Wanda Sykes expressed her outrage regarding the recent passage of California’s Proposition 8 on Saturday, decrying the piece of legislation that banned gay marriage in the state and revealing publicly for the first time that she was, herself, gay and married to her partner.

“I’m proud to be a woman, I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay,” Sykes told a crowd gathered in Las Vegas to rally for gay rights. The hardened comedian explained that she didn’t feel the need to discuss her sexuality with the media before Proposition 8 was passed on Election Day, but now needed to “get in [the collective] face” of those who supported such a measure.

Sykes, 44, also revealed that she had wed her girlfriend in California less than two weeks before the new law went into effect.

“When my wife and I leave California, I want to have my marriage also recognized in Nevada, in Arizona, all the way to New York,” she said, adding that the gay community’s galvanization over the state ban would lead to grassroots action on the federal level.

Sykes recently filmed a public service announcement for the Ad Council’s ThinkB4YouSpeak.com, in which she encouraged a group of teenage boys in a pizzeria not to use the term “gay” as a synonym for “dumb or stupid,” citing the offensive nature of such comments. Fashion plate Hilary Duff also recorded a clip for the Web site’s TV and Internet campaign, admonishing a teenage girl in a clothes boutique for calling a friend’s top “gay.”

Comedian Wanda Sykes announced she was gay during a Proposition 8 protest on Saturday.

"I'm proud to be a black woman and I'm proud to be gay," said Sykes, 44, at the Las Vegas rally.

The "New Adventures of Old Christine" star married her wife on Oct. 25 and is taking a stand for gay rights.

"If we had equal rights, we shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something that we automatically should have as citizens of this country," Sykes said. "I said, 'You know what, now I gotta get in your face.' And that's what we have to do now. They have pissed off the wrong group of people!"

Do you have these mental lists of things? For example, I have a mental list of important things I need to buy when I get enough money. I also have a mental list of yeah-she's-probably-gay-and-needs-to-come-out people. Wanda Sykes was not on that list.

Call me crazy. Now that she is out, I can kinda see it, but before this weekend, she would never have made the list. Queen Latifah? Yes. Wanda Sykes? No. Anyway, at a Prop 8 event in Las Vegas she said, quote, "I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay."

Good for her!
