Breaking Down the MNF Broncos vs Pats Showdown

posted by Cartman

I’m going to do a quick little fantasy preview on this game, and then get into some game details.

Must Plays:

Jay Cutler: I think he will throw up 250+ yards and 2-3 touchdowns, so you be the judge on whether or not you would like that type of production in your lineup.

Brandon Marshall: He will have a great game, whether Royal plays or not, Marshall will be matched up against one of the worst secondaries in the league all game, and that can’t be good for N.E. fans. I’m predicting him to get back to his 100 yard days and have his first mult-touchdown game of the season.

Good Plays:

Michael Pittman: He will have a very solid game, and may squeeze a touchdown in a goal line situation in this game. I’d say he’s a solid start, but not a must start. New England does have a decent run defense.

Wes Welker: Denver’s defense is one of the worst against the pass. However, they cover the #1 receivers very well because of Champ Bailey, so expect Randy Moss to get shut down. Dre Bly may have trouble matching Wes Welker’s tenacity and ability to knife through on crossing routes. I’d say if New England can move the ball, Wes Welker will be a big part of it.

Matt Prater: The only thing not to like about him in this matchup is that he’s playing in the unpredictable North East and anything can happen weather wise in that area, especially with winds. However, he has a very good chance to kick 3 field goals or more, and I would take that as a good chance to put up some points.

If You Must:

Randy Moss: I think he will have a very off game, which has been pretty common place for him this season without Tom Brady. He should give you 60 yards or so, but probably no touchdowns. But, having said that, he is a threat to go deep at any time, and that may be one reason to take a risk and play him.

Eddie Royal: He didn’t play last week, will his chemistry be off with Cutler? Only time will tell, however, look how the offense sputtered in his absense last week. But, you have to wonder if his ankle will allow him to be productive this week. I like the matchup, but not the health of this player. So, you decide what to do with him.

Tony Sheffler: Another guy that has a good matchup, but may not be worth a play. He is a playmaker for the Denver offense, but with an injury last week, he may not be very productive this week. If he plays, I say give him a shot if you don’t have much depth at TE, but if you do, play the other guy.

Ok. I have gotten the fantasy preview part out of the way. I hope everyone liked my analysis. Now, let’s see how these two teams really stack up.

QB- Cutler Vs. Cassel: Drumroll please……..ok……so this is a pretty obvious mismatch, but if he can find Randy Moss deep, all bets are off. Jay Cutler should be able to scorch NE’s porous pass defense if he has his full array of weapons. Matt Cassel, if he can hit his check downs should have a solid game, but he is going to have to be a game manager in this one and take a couple chances with Randy Moss deep.

Edge: Denver

RB- Michael Pittman vs. NE: I don’t think Lamont Jordan or Lawrence Maroney will be playing in this one. That means Sammy Morris will get a crack at Denver’s run defense, but without game breaking potential, I think Denver’s defense hold’s NE’s running game in check. Michael Pittman should have a solid game, and if Jay Cutler catches fire, I really like Pittman on screen passes and wearing NE out late in the game.

Edge: Denver

WR- Marshall/Royal Vs. Moss/Welker: I think one receiver from each team will be somewhat neutralized. And those receivers are Randy Moss and Eddie Royal. Randy Moss has the task of going up against Champ Bailey, and Eddie Royal has a chance of going against himself, well, atleast his injury. But, Marshall and Welker should have nice games, with Marshall eclipsing 100 yards and scoring a couple of times.

Edge: Denver

OL: Den. Vs. NE: This matchup should be pretty good. However, I think Denver’s offensive line is having it’s finest season in years, and has a quarterback with a quick release, I can’t say the same about Matt Cassel. With Denver running the ball effectively and getting some great matchups in the secondary, Denver’s offensive line will play a huge role in that.

Edge: Denver

Defense/ST: I love Matt Prater in this matchup and don’t feel that N.E. is going to get as many scoring opportunities, so the kicking matchup should favor Denver. With some injury concerns, i’d give the advantage to NE in the return game.

Defensively speaking, I think Denver will get pumped up for this road game, and fully expose this NE defense, also Denver’s defense has had to go against some pretty good quarterbacks in the early going, it get’s a break in this matchup, I look for Denver to come out and confuse Matt Cassel and with injuries in the running game, they will struggle to run it as well.

Edge: Denver

So, Denver matches up favorably to NE, that shouldn’t be a surprise, even when Tom Brady plays, Denver typically beats N.E.

Score: 34-17 Denver

So, grab your popcorn and get ready for MNF football…..oh and a cold beverage to wash it down would be nice too.

Once and for all

posted by Stank0
Look, can we quit with the Wes Welker nutsack hangin, please? Talking head after talking head Commentator after commentator praise him to the skies. Uh...there's a few reasons for his success. 1. He plays for a better team, 2. Tom Brady, and 3. Randy Moss

Randy Moss and Terrell Owens

Randy Moss SuperMan

So let's role play for a second. You're a defensive coordinator and you are playing the Patriots. You have seen the game film on Moss and Welker. Who do you focus on stoppin more?

A comment said it best about Welker.

for wes welker, it should say the ultimate possession receiver who
thrives on having randy moss taking majority of the coverage.

Stank-0 recognizes Welker's talents, but realizes his production is a function of the most physically gifted receiver to EVER play the game drawing double coverage. EVER. Once in a lifetime receiver.

Randy Moss effected an entire draft. He was the class of 98 and the very next year you saw a rack of corners and taller faster receivers get drafted.

Powered by ScribeFire.

posted by DisabledMess

I had a football fantasy draft last night with guys I’ve been playing with for years. I’m not good at fantasy football. I always come in either 9th or 10th in a 10 team keeper league. Here’s the team I drafted last night.

QB Ben Roethlisberger, PIT
RB LenDale White, TEN
WR Wes Welker, NE
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC
OFLEX(RB) Ryan Grant, GB
OFLEX(RB)Earnest Graham, TB
OFLEX(WR)T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN WR
Bench
Anquan Boldin, ARZ WR
Anthony Gonzalez, IND WR
Michael Bush, OAK RB
Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG RB
Aaron Rodgers, GB QB
Jay Cutler, DEN QB
Jeff Garcia, TB QB

K Rob Bironas, TEN

Defense

Justin Tuck, NYG
Trent Cole, PHI
Mario Williams, HOU
Bench Patrick Kerney, SEA
Bench Lofa Tatupu, SEA

My brother thinks I don’t have stud running backs and I look to his advice because he is very good at fantasy sports. I think they are ok but he is right, I have no studs.

I’m not good at fantasy baseball or fantasy football but I’m great at fantasy hockey. I won my hockey league two years in a row.

I’m not liking this weather right now. It’s August and it’s a little too cool for my liking. I like 90’s and up. This weather is reminding me that fall is right around the corner.

I had a hard time putting on my shorts this morning because my belly was sticking out. We’re in the summer, I can only imagine in the winter. I’m going to have to cut down.

Carla Pavano, who could start Saturday will never stay healthy on the field. Don’t let him fool you. He’ll pitch well in the minors, come up to the pro club, pitch maybe one or two great games and get hurt. Like death and taxes, Carla Pavano getting hurt is a certainty in life.

QUICK TAKE: PATRIOTS SURVIVE EAGLES

posted by aeguy27
Before we get to the quick take, I have to express my frustration with the Patriots. For 11 weeks now the Pats have been the talk of the NFL. "One of the best, if not the best team to ever come through the league." That's what I hear most often, and I have found myself saying the same thing at times. More recently I have changed my mind. First, they exhibit no class by running up 30-40 point spreads on opposing teams who already know they won't win. What the hell is the point of that? You end up looking like jackasses. Second, I want to know how many games they have won this season using stolen signals. I was amazed at how quickly everyone in the league just seemed to move on when it came to that subject. They should have lost more than a first-round draft pick in my opinion. Third, as the Eagles so beautifully displayed, you don't have to be the best, to beat the best. I mean, come on. Philly went in there with their second-string quarterback and almost managed to topple "the best team ever" AT HOME. I have my doubts.

In my opinion, the gig is up New England....Now on to the news from NFL.com

***NFL.com***
It was over when ...
CB Asante Samuel intercepted a long A.J. Feely pass intended for WR Kevin Curtis in the end zone with the Patriots holding onto a 31-28 lead with 3:58 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had been moving the ball effectively (seven plays, 71 yards) before the turnover.

Getty Images

Patriots WR Wes Welker recorded season highs in receptions (13) and yards (149).

Game balls
On offense, it goes to Patriots WR Wes Welker, who recorded season highs in receptions (13) and yards (149). On defense, Samuel had two interceptions, the first coming on the Eagles' third play from scrimmage, which he returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

Key stat
The Patriots won despite calling just 15 rushing plays and throwing the ball a season-high 54 times.

Noteworthy
With his 21st and 22nd career interceptions, Samuel is now ninth on the Patriots' all-time list. ... The Patriots are the only team to have not allowed an opponent to score on their first possession of the game this season. ... Following their second touchdown, the Eagles successfully converted a surprise onside kick with 12:50 remaining in the second quarter. ... The Patriots went with a four-wide receiver formation and called only one run play -- to FB Heath Evans -- the entire first half. Patriots RB Laurence Maroney's first carry of the game came with 11:27 remaining in the third quarter. He finished with 10 carries for 31 yards and one touchdown. ... With 31 points vs. the Eagles, the Patriots now have 442 in 11 games, eclipsing their previous franchise high for a season (441 in 1980). ... With just one touchdown pass Brady failed to throw at least three for the first time this season. ... The Eagles' 21 first-half points were the most scored against the Patriots in the first half this season. ... Eagles WR Greg Lewis caught two touchdown passes -- his first scores of the season.
