Cinco de Mayo!

One of my favorite holidays for food -- especially since I consider chips and salsa and chips and guacamole a food group.

Set me on a beach in Mexico with a Corona and some chips and salsa and call it a day. My heaven on earth.

Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexico's victory over the French in 1862. OK, so it was a short lived victory, but a victory none the less.

Cinco de Mayo...how I would love to be on that beach in Mexico celebrating right now, but I'm not sure I could...celebrate that is.

My mind keeps thinking about the 400 + women and girls of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico that have been brutally raped and murdered since 1993.

My mind keeps thinking of the fear the women and girls of Juarez live in on a daily basis.

Justice has not come for the victims or the families of the victims yet.

How does one celebrate victory when fear, terror, heartache, and lack of justice dominates everyday life?

How can these families of Juarez, Mexico truly celebrate victory when the women and girls live in fear and the families of the 400 women and girls murdered continue to seek justice?

What is justice for the rape and murder of a young girl or anyone for that matter?

Having studied business law, I can wrap my mind around the ins and outs of "justice" in the white collar crime field, but defining "justice" for the brutal torture, rape and murder of another person is something I am challenged in imagining any human being able to define. I think we can come as close as we can within our legal systems...legal systems that are not broken, defective, and corrupt that is.

But what about finding a sense of justice in just reporting the news that these women and girls existed and that their lives were brutally taken?

AND

That their torturers and killers have not been imprisoned?

How is it that the torture, rape and murder of 400 young girls and women in Juarez, Mexico failed to make the evening news or the majority of the world's newspapers?

These young girls and women did not fail in their lives, the progression of corporate news failed these 400 young girls and women.

On this Cinco de Mayo, this day of celebration of victory, I share with you two special works of art acknowledging the women and girls of Juarez, Mexico.

Thank God for artists!

First, Bordertown.

Gregory Nava's 2006 movie starring Jennifer Lopez, Antonio Banderas, and Martin Sheen among others tells the story of Lauren (Lopez), an American reporter from Chicago who heads to Mexico to investigate a number of murders near American-owned factories on the border of Juarez and El Paso. Her discovery is shocking.

Shocking in what she discovers about the murders and shocking in the discovery of who decides what part of her story will be printed.

Second, jewelery designer Colleen Berg.

Happy Cinco de Mayo to all.

Today is a day of Mexican celebration, and one all Americans should be thankful for as well.

What does Cinco de Mayo commemorate?

Well, let me give you a history lesson and explain.

In 1862, Napoleon III, Emperor of France, had sent troops to Mexico to install a puppet government.

This army of well supplied French soldiers had planned on attacking Mexico City. It was not to be.

When word of this plan spread, a gang of 43 young Mexicans decided to take on the French army.

This gang had been formed after the evil Gadsden Purchase of 1853. These brave gang members were known as The Franklin Piercers.

So, The 43 FP’ers crammed into a single horse drawn wagon and headed to meet the French at the city of Puebla.

Armed only with switchblades, unbridled courage, and mariachi music, these warriors defeated the mighty French army…

May 5, 1862.

I am glad those guys thwarted the French, because had they not, things today would be much worse here in the States.

For instance, all of those illegals swimming across the Rio Grande to come here would be French!!

Can you imagine having your lawn and garden kept up by a half dozen French guys? Oh, dear God…

They would be complaining about the heat, the pay, and the crooked mow lines on the fescue. And God forbid if you offer them tap water to drink…

They would demand Perrier!!

Of course on the upside, in spite of their hairy armpits, the Hotel maids would be much hotter. But anyway…

There would be no Mexican fast food chains. Instead, Main Street U.S.A. would be littered with places called Crepe-O Bell.

Am I going to go to a place like that stinkin' drunk at 2 A.M., and order the Pollo Puff Pastry Supreme with currants and bleu cheese? Je ne le fuckin' pense pas.

Just think…If one of these illegals stopped me to ask for directions, my entire response would be different.

Instead of the fluid, lilting sounding reply, “No Habla Espanol.” I would have to say, “I don’t speak French, you pretentious bastard.”

Hell, even history would be forever altered.

Instead of being known for his brazen, anti-hero exploits, Pancho Villa would be known for his over powering serve as he won the 1912 French Open on the clay courts of Avignon.

So Sad…

So on this Cinco de Mayo, take time out to hug an illegal Mexican and thank them for not being French.

Just make sure to keep one hand on your wallet when you do so.

The Highs & Lows of Cinco de Mayo

Perhaps it was the tequila, but on Monday, May 5 -- Cinco de Mayo -- there was an interesting series of three posts on the use of the SPX High-Low Index to help time the market. I use this indicator as well, and three posts in one day caught my eye. What struck me is that I apply the SPX High-Low across a slightly different timeframe, and so am adding a fourth post to the discussion.

-- Bill Luby at VIX and More smoothes the High-Low Index with a 20-day EMA to identify intermediate oversold levels and changes in trend. It's a solid approach, a good article, and is one that makes similar observations to my own.

-- Babak at Trader's Narrative uses an intermediate time frame as well, but smoothes with a 10-day MA. Babak posted on the SPX High-Low Index because for him the indicator is currently suggesting caution. While it's not flashing an extreme, Babak senses that the index is nearing an overbought condition. "The easy money has been made in [the SPX] trade."

-- At Investor Village, in a response to Bill Luby, pcyhuang offers an alternative interpretation. It takes the daily readings of the SPX High-Low and applies Parabolic SAR. Since the daily High-Low data are extremely volatile, pcyhuang's version is very jumpy. With unsmoothed, daily SAR settings, this version of the indicator favors short, 3-14 day time frames.

I found these posts interesting because I discovered the accuracy of High-Low as a Buy/Sell indicator resides more in longer time-frames. In other words, I'd been burned over the years by applying short and intermediate time frames, and found accuracy only after tweaking the time frame longer.

The chart below reveals how a 10-week EMA of the SPX High-Low Index is useful in identifying key, cyclical changes in market trend. The biggest caveat is that High-Low is at its best in picking bottoms, and is dicey at picking tops. At indicator tops, stocks can rally on for months, even as the indicator throws off multiple sell signals. However, extremely low readings provide decent bottom calls.

Over the 6-year period below, the 10-week EMA oscillates in a channel between 50 and 90. You can see that extremely high readings generated numerous false sell signals ( a cross below 90). However, extreme low readings marked both the 2002 and (potentially) 2008 bottom. Crossovers above 50 trigger a cyclical buy.

The takeaway is that the SPX High-Low Index below is currently triggering an important cyclical buy signal for the market, but it remains unconfirmed.

OK now pass the guacamole.

In Mexico, CInco de Maya is the celebrations of the Mexican defeat over the French in the Battle of Puebla.
However in the US, Cinco de Mayo has become a day for partying with plenty of tasty, tasty Mexican food and Margaritas!

Well... another busy week screaming at me. This week at school is teacher appreciation (something different every day), my sons have informed me that sandwiches for lunch are BORING and they need something "fresh", the big year-end school event meetings are ramping up, toss in various appointments and meetings, and top it off with going away with my DH away for the weekend and packing a romantic picnic for the way up north. I need a cup of coffee just thinking about it!

So while I give deep and serious consideration to boring school lunches, I'll whip up a Chicken and Pasta Caesar Salad for the teacher appreciation picnic, work on some interesting Kabobs for the picnic, and maybe make some Fudge Brownies to go with it.

Since to day is Cinco de Mayo we're having Pork Soft Tacos (the pork is roasting and I can smell the cumin!), fruit salsa with cinnamon chips (my kids love this), guacamole and tortilla chips (I'll just bake some plain/salted with the cinnamon ones) and Spanish Sangria (adults only!). I'm going to try out Penne with Roasted Asparagus, & Artichokes which I already know the boys will not eat, but I'll grab a jar of marinara sauce for them and they'll be happy with that and cheesy garlic bread.

Other interesting things this week: Grilled Lime Chicken with Stuffed Baked Potatoes and BLT Salad, and Kielbasa and Canellini Beans and Brussels Sprouts (my kids will actually eat them steamed with a teriyaki glaze).

If I don't post next Monday...please send coffee!
