How To Create Your Property Into A Whitetail Deer Paradise

I will be sharing with you on how I made my property into whitetail deer paradise, and what still needs to be done. I own 150 acres in southwest Michigan, which I bought in 1989. Up until 1995 we, me, family, and friends shot every buck that gave us a opportunity and did not shoot does. All that change in 1995 when I shot a buck that scored in the 120’s. After that day I stared doing research on how to get bigger deer.

The following season I started putting in new ideas and concepts into my property. My first rule was if you shot it you had to mount it. This took care of the people that just want to shoot anything. I placed 20 acres in a safe zone. We also started to shoot does. After a few years we started seeing alot more 2 1/2 & 3 1/2 years old and were killing nice bucks every year. I then went to neighbors and tried to get them on board.

During the next time period I started to add food plot and create better habitat. I made sure that I had food available for deer all year. I had clover, alfa, wheat, chicory, rye, corn, beans, brassicas, and many others. I clearcut 10 acres and did some logging, added a pond and started to plant pines around my open fields.

I also put in about 25 apple trees, my property was now the whitetails favorite property around, I started to draw deer from my neighbors that had the best bedding ground. While his land was getting more open I was creating thicker cover. I also added a few mineral licks.

My future plans include to add cover for travel routes though my open fields to the neighbors. Put in a pine stand in the middle of an open field and then plant cover around that, this will be a safe zone plus winter protection. I also plan on planting about 10 acres of switch grass.

During this time we have shot 25 bucks that have scored 120 or better, the best being a 165 9 pointer. I believe that I’m getting closer to have a Boone & Crockett running on my property. During this time I enjoy creating wildlife habitat and food plots just as much as hunting.

Spotting Buck Rubs

Buck rubs are not the effect of velvet shedding, nor are they made because bucks are purposely trying to polish their antlers. It's true that during the process of removing velvet, bucks do some rubbing on trees and saplings, but they typically complete this whole process within twenty-four hours. Increasing testosterone levels cause bucks to become more aggressive, which drives them to promote themselves through scent marking. Essentially, this is the purpose of rubbing. In a strict sense, white-tailed deer are not territorial yet rubs do serve to inform deer of the social hierarchy within a certain area.

Buck rubs are part of the communication system of deer. We detect rubs-the white scars of the deer forest-by sight. More likely deer detect them by smell. When a buck rubs a sapling, he deposits odor from glands in the forehead, and he will also pause to actually lick the rubbed tree or sapling. Other bucks visit that rub to detect these pheromones, or chemical messages. Bucks do not make rubs with their antler tines, but instead with the ridges on the base and burr of the antlers. Like using a vegetable shredder, the buck grates the bark from the tree into long strings, which he often eats.

When locating buck rubs while scouting, an important clue remains the diameter of the tree. It's true that large bucks will rub small trees, but rarely do small bucks rub large trees. So when you find a rub that stands out in terms of tree size, you can be pretty certain it was made by a big buck. Also keep in mind that the scrapes of a buck will generally be found within 100 to 200 yards of his rubs.

Generally small bucks do not make many rubs. Large bucks prohibit small bucks from breeding, so small bucks have little motivation to advertise their presence. The more dominant a buck, the more active his forehead scent glands, therefore the more rubs he makes. The rubs of a dominant buck serve as sign-posts to inform other bucks of who is the master deer in a certain area. The companions of the dominant buck will freely travel the same range' however, they mind the warnings the lead male posts and act submissively whenever he's in the immediate vicinity.

Research shows that an individual buck may make 500 or more rubs in a single season. The 100 to 300 figure, however, is probably more common. Nonetheless, this amounts to at least one or more rubs per day over a four-month period for the average buck. It is not strange to see forty young, even-aged timber such as aspen.

Regardless of where you find the white-tailed deer, bucks seem to prefer saplings with a strong resinous sap above all others. Pine remains a favorite softwood species for rubbing as well as cedar, tamarack and balsam. In hardwoods, black cherry and apple are common targets for rubs. Bucks also rub wooden fence posts and power line poles. Bucks often return to the same tree for rubbing, and the same tree may be rubbed several times over a period of years. Some of the smaller saplings die after the first rubbing, but many trees survive the first and subsequent wounds.

Breeding rubs differ entirely in their appearance from rubs made in early fall. These savage rubs, the white scars of the deer forest, frequently damage or kill bushed. Branches and roots in and around the main target. Search an area with a high density of breeding rubs, for being in an area with big rubs results in seeing big bucks. Check particularly for areas that exhibit vigorous rubbing activity over a period of many years in the same small spots.

Encourage Young Hunters with Camo Bedding
September's almost here, and with it, shorter days, cooler temperatures and a new season. No, it's not just fall. It's hunting season. Time to break out the camo, clean the guns, get up at the crack of dawn, and leave civilization in search of that ever-elusive twelve-point buck. If you're an enthusiastic hunter, chances are you've been encouraging your children in the hobby as well. And if they enjoy it half as much as you do, then they're probably eager to display their love anywhere they can: with their clothes, books, toys and even their bedroom decorations. You may not be able to get away with pulling your kids out of school early for "Thanksgiving vacation," but you can encourage your beginner hunter by turning their bedroom into a true hunter's den. Creating the hunter's den The bed is the biggest piece of any room, which by default makes it the focal point. If you're going with a theme, the bed is the best place to anchor the room and tie it together. Camouflage bedding is a fun way to spruce up your kid's bedroom with a hunting motif, and there are a number of different camo bedding sets out there. Brands like Mossy Oak, Realtree and Advantage offer bedding in a number of their more popular camouflage patterns. Not only does camouflage bedding keep hunting on the mind even when you're at home, but it will also give your little hunters a chance to pick out the decorations for their own bedrooms. Their room reflects their interests, and it's something that they were able to do on their own, which adds a nice little thrill of independence to their hunter’s den. It’s also something you can do together while still encouraging them to find their own style. Trophy bedrooms Need some extra light in the room? A lamp with a deer engraved in the metal base may be perfect, or a forest scene shade. Instead of a regular old night light, why not get one with bucks painted on the faceplate? If you've thought about painting the room, why not look into a camouflage wallpaper for one wall, or a camouflage border to go along with the paint? If you're feeling really artistic, you could even do a wildlife mural on one wall. If you've got antlers or turkey feathers from previous hunts, they might make good wall decorations in your child's room. You could even make shadow boxes with hunting pictures and smaller hunting trophies, like feathers, arrows or spent shells. See what your kids like, and let them make the final decision. Let your home reflect your hobbies Millions of people enjoy hunting as a pastime every year, and everybody should have a place at home that reflects their spirit.
