A Hamilton, New Jersey man is facing six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of distributing the performance enhancing drugs human growth hormone and anabolic steroids.

They found HGH and steroids in powder, liquid and pill form out in the open on the kitchen counter, in the microwave and in the refrigerator.
The bust came as the prosecutor's office was also investigating the alleged illegal use and procurement of HGH by a group of Trenton police officers, though officials would not say if there was any connection between the two investigations.

Prosecutor spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said at the time that other arrests were likely to follow in the wake of Suarez's apprehension, though no related busts have been announced.

Meanwhile, the investigation into Trenton police and HGH has been handed over to the state attorney general, and it was recently reported that a number of officers have received "target" letters compelling their cooperation in the case.

Source: The Trentonian

The Argument Against Steroids in Sports

posted by bbucy
The Mitchell report today nuked about 80 baseball players for using steroids, human growth hormones and all that other nastiness, save for amphetamines, the "greenies" Mitchell and the MLB know virtually every player takes or took.

Flaws and all, the report makes one salient point: the use of drugs like steroids and human growth hormones gives athletes an unfair advantage over competitors who worry about testicular shrinkage or whether they might fly into a rage and murder their families.

So what's to do?

Random blood tests for an ever-expanding list of performance-enhancing substances conducted by an independent agency. If, as so often said, the majority of players don't use them, the players' union could easily vote to change its position. And if the penalties are severe enough, at least some measure of compliance with reasonable rules would result.

Absent that, how can anyone ever bet a game?

Former Mets GM Steve Phillips on Mets players and amphetamines

posted by JmMetsBlog

...Extremely interesting article regarding a recent edition of ESPN's outside the lines. The show focused on a bunch of stories, interviewing former trainer Larry Starr, ex-star Dale Murphy, and current players and managers such as Tom Glavine, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa.

The article had editors notes that read:
In November 2005, Congress released the results of its investigation into steroid use by Rafael Palmiero. The report described reckless and illegal use of prescription drugs in the Baltimore Orioles' locker room. In 1999, a similar scene was unfolding in the New York Mets' locker room, as Tom Farrey reports in this bonus coverage from ESPN The Magazine's examination of steroid abuse.

The most interesting part of the show however became the comments by former New York Mets general manager and current ESPN analyst; Steve Phillips. He admitted knowing that executives knew who was and who wasn't on steroids and used that info in their player evaluations. He even mentioned an example from his time with the Mets, of course leaving the name out.

"Those conversations were standard,'' "In fact, if a player was using steroids prior to us signing him, I will tell you with a certain amount of shame, I certainly didn't want him to stop when he joined my team.' 'I had a player who hit a lot of home runs for another team prior to us signing him. With us, he was struggling. By June, I wanted to know what was going on with this guy. I found out he had chosen that year to give up amphetamines. He thought it was affecting his level of play. In my mind, I was thinking 'Dear God, would somebody please get him back on them?' I say that with shame, but that was the nature [of the game].''
