If 2002's sun-drenched "Come On, Come On" found a nail-biting Sheryl Crow unsure of her position as pop tunesmith or serious singer/songwriter, 2005's "Wildflower" - her "art" record as she dubbed it - certified she could straddle the line without compromise.

She continues that progression with the aptly-titled "Detours," sifting through a myriad of topics like her breast cancer battle, broken engagement to Lance Armstrong and adoption of a baby boy. She may have been sidetracked, but she embraces the rhythm of life, an artist true to form.

Crow reunites with Bill Bottrell, producer of her 1993 debut "Tuesday Night Music Club," and the results are compelling and thoroughly listenable. Lo-fi opener "God Bless This Mess" is wall-to-wall Crow, reiterating the song's title line despite hazy post 9/11 life, while the jaunty radio-ready rock of the futuristic blue-collar anthem "Gasoline" and bouncy single "Love Is Free" keep the pace.

She bares her soul on "Make It Go Away (Radiation Song)" and delivers a high-octane rocker in the politically conscious "Shine Over Babylon," but the revelatory title track and cheery, swashbuckling "Out of Our Heads" keep the colors from running too dark.

In spite of life's hardships she finds comfort in "Peace Be Upon Us" and the gorgeous "Love Is All There Is" without a trace of sap left on her fingers, while perfect closer "Lullaby For Wyatt" finds Crow fully aware of the trials of motherhood as she tenderly croons "you're mine...for a time."

Crow is a rare flower of a talent in an entertainment industry full of weeds and flash-in-the-pans, but she is not fragile. Transforming the personal into the universal, she has the rare power to make listeners consider not just themselves but the ambiguous world they live in and keep things entertaining and fresh all the while.

Sheryl Crow's statment - I am a big believer in doing what you can, even if it's something as small as reducing the amount of plastic we each use daily that ends up in landfills, whether it is plastic bags, water bottles or product packaging. In an exclusive interview with Page Six Magazine, Sheryl Crow, 44, opened up about her health, son Wyatt, 15 months, and her new boyfriend. Here’s a few snippets from the interview:

On the true guy in her life - Wyatt Steven: “He is all boy,” she says. “He is very game. He has done everything early. He started walking at 10 months and I think that is due to the fact that he’s a very curious kid.” She remembers the day he started walking. “I was over at my girlfriend’s house in Kansas City, and she’s got three teenage boys and I could tell he wanted to be with them, so it’s like, ‘I’ve got to start walking!’

On a sibling for Wyatt: “I don’t know,” she says. “Right now he is coming into his own personality, so it’s all about him.”

On Sheryl’s decision to adopt after tumultuous time in her life: “There was a shift in my life when I got diagnosed, [with breast cancer] because it demanded I look at everything and redefine my life,” she says. “I always felt I would be a mom. I have strong maternal instincts.”

Sheryl Crow Wants To Help Her Son Go Green

Sheryl Crow doesn’t make it a secret that she wants to go green. And now she wants to teach her son, Wyatt, that he should go green too.

“When my son was 3 months old, I took him to the zoo. At the polar bear exhibit, Wyatt’s face lit up when he saw the baby polar bear. It was amazing for me to watch them connect — these living beings who share a planet. But I also felt panic and overwhelming sadness knowing the impact our environment is having on polar bears and on us.

“Yet I see something very hopeful in kids — the birth of new activists. Kids don’t just feel helplessness and panic but a sense of injustice, too. I sometimes think the thing that keeps adults from acting is cynicism, a belief that we can’t really change things. Kids aren’t like that. They’re awake to what’s around them, so they can actually do something about it. We teach our kids all these ideals: Let’s leave the Earth a better place than we found it. Kids are motivated not just by what’s in their heads but by what they actually see, like a baby polar bear. They can be the ones to motivate us, their parents, to change.”

I think it’s never too late to teach your family about ways to save the Earth. Because if we don’t start to do something soon who knows what kind of Earth they will have when they grow up.
