XDR TB is becoming an ever more dangerous public health threat because it is relatively easy to transmit through the air and is nearly completely untreatable - it is resistant to almost all of the standard drugs used to treat TB. These maps below highlight the fundamental problem in public health: inequitably distributed resources. The first shows the earth's land area distorted by a mathematical model reflecting the distribution of TB. The second uses a similar model to distort the earth's area, reflecting public health spending.

A new report suggests that the number of cases of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) in the U.S. has declined in the past fifteen years, but new cases continue to be reported, according to the study published in the November 12 issue of JAMA. The researchers note the decrease in the number of XDR-TB cases coincides with improved TB and HIV/AIDS control.
