Karma of the Week (07/27/2008)

posted by Karmic_Boomerang
Hello everyone, good to be back with a good old fashioned karma blog after missing last week. The camping trip was awesome and just what I needed to clear my head and get back to it last week.

Let's get this party started.

Bad Karma

Honorable Mention- Xavier Nady is dead to me

It's not really his fault, but Xavier Nady was traded to the Axis of Evil this week.

Actually, he was called up from the Yankees Triple-A team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I had the fortune of being able to watch Nady when he was really in Triple-A, in Portland. He was SO good, it was ridiculous. By the time the Padres called him up, he was so bored with Triple-A pitching, he was hitting a homer every other night or less.

Nady now joins the juggernaut that is the Yanks and I no longer wish to root for him.

Runner-up- Mariners are back

The Seattle Mariners make their way back to the list as they have lost seven straight and are once again, the worst team in baseball.

Every thing that can go wrong for the Mariners this year, has.

Sexson may be gone, but the sentiment is still the same.

They are 26 games back of the Los Angeles Angels of Disneyland and given the recent state of the sports landscape in Seattle, you'd think that the organization would try to fix this team before things get worse.

Winner- The Army flip-flops again

Caleb Campbell, an Army 2nd Lt. who had been taken by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the NFL draft, received permission to pursue his dream of becoming a professional football player. Now, the Army has taken back their permission and has stated that Campbell must report for active duty.

The Army had initially said Campbell could fulfill his military obligation by serving two years as a recruiter in his spare time. Academy graduates are usually required to serve five years and many serve their whole career.

The flip-flop was enough to bring Campbell to tears.

What ever happened with David Robinson? He was in the Navy and played basketball for YEARS! What happened to positive public image?

In a time of war and uncertainty, when the military is losing recruits left and right, don't you think that they would want some positive story being spun about the Army?

Wouldn't it be great for the Army to have an NFL player, living in Detroit, recruiting people from the area and reinforcing a positive image about the military?

I guess the Army doesn't think so. I have total respect for our Men and Women in uniform. This is not a bash against our troops, so please don't view it that way. I am simply saying that at a time where our military could use some good karma, they throw a bad karma Doomerang instead.

Good Karma

Honorable Mention- Here come the Yanks

The Yankees have won eight straight, upgraded their lineup and bullpen with Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte and are looking like the team that everyone thought they would be.

Now, they are targeting Seattle's Jarrod Washburn to boost the starting rotation.

The Red Sox and Rays should be afraid....very afraid.

Runner-up- Sastre wins the Tour de France

Carlos Sastre won the Tour de France today, becoming the third consecutive Spaniard to capture cycling's Super Bowl. (Alberto Contador won last year, and Oscar Pereiro inherited the 2006 title that was lost by Floyd Landis in a doping scandal.)

Sastre held a narrow lead over Cadel Evans of Australia, finishing seven seconds behind for an overall 58-second victory. Bernhard Kohl of Austria was 1:13 back for third place, the second tightest top-3 finish in the 105-year-old race.

Winner- Reader's Choice

What is your favorite sports moment of the week? Who's on a roll? Who's playing abover their heads? Let me know here. Thanks.

--------------------------------

Finally today, Week 17 in my "If the season ended today....." In an attempt to find trends and when they occur, I will give you the playoff matchups if the season were to end today. (Standings as of the end of play Saturday night)

Week 17

ALDS

Chicago vs. Tampa Bay
Boston vs. Los Angeles

NLDS

Milwaukee vs. New York
Arizona vs. Chicago

Here we go....the Brewers and D-Backs are back in...but for how long? The Brewers and Cubs are tied for the NL Central and Wild-Card.

Number of weeks in playoff contention (Latest week of Contention)

Los Angeles (AL)- 16
Arizona- 15
St. Louis- 15 (Week 16)
Chicago (AL)- 15
Chicago (NL)- 15
Boston- 12
Tampa Bay- 12
Florida- 7 (Week 9)
Philadelphia- 7 (Week 15)
Baltimore- 4 (Week 4)
Milwaukee- 4
Oakland- 4 (Week 6)
New York (NL)- 3
Kansas City- 1 (Week 1)
Minnesota- 1 (Week 5)
Los Angeles (NL)- 1 (Week 16)
San Diego- 1
Toronto- 1

That's all for this week. Again, if you have some stories to share, I am open to suggestions. Have a great week filled with good karma. See you Wednesday with Get to Know the 50 States (Missouri)

Best wishes for good karma to all!

Will Xavier Nady be a Mets Outfield Backup?

posted by Mojob
The former Mets Xavier Nady, is in the trading block for the Pirates this year. The Mets might have the best need to get Nady from the Pirates. Due to, so many injuries in their roster like Moises Alou who will miss 4-6 weeks because of an hernia.

Xavier whom they traded to the Pirates, for reliever Roberto Hernandez and left-hander Oliver Perez in July 2006. May be a great option for the Mets to play outfield this season, he gives the Mets a defensively and offensively player. Who can almost, play every game of the season because he stays healthy.

He last year with the Pirates had, a .278 AVG, 20 home runs, and 72 RBIs. Which is why, it puts the Mets in a better position to get him this year. Because they do not have so many players healthy to play on that position. That is why I think Xavier will be a great pickup by the Mets, if they do actually try and get him.

But you could always count on youngsters, they may get more playing time this season. Don't you think? There are a lot of young players who have shown talent to play in outfield. But two of them which I really think will get more playing time do to outfield injuries are, Angel Pagan and Fernando Martinez. I think that this two young players have really showed themselves in Spring Training.

Angel Pagan who was reacquired from the Cubs, has really been a very great outfield that you could count on. Pagan is hitting .429 AVG in Spring Training, which is why the Mets should really look on to play an outfield position this year. Because he may get better and better every time he plays more games.

Another great and very young talent outfield is Fernando Martinez, Martinez who is just 19 is proven to Willie Randolph. That he is ready and want to start playing this season in the big leagues. He on Spring Training has a .300 AVG, but the most incredible things that I see from him. Is that, every time he steps up on the mound to get an at-bat, he seems to hit the ball hard every time. Which is something so great to see, from a player that is really anxious to get to the big leagues in such a young age. I also look from him his aggressiveness and determination that he has has on the field. Martinez is a really good defender outfielder, since I seen him play with the Mets the past few games.

If Alex Rodriguez made it to the big leagues when he was just 19, then is in it possible that Fernando might go through the same way, as Alex did? Well I hope he does because I really appreciate how he really tries so hard to be great in a game.

Xavier was a deadline steal

posted by DisabledMess

Xavier Nady

Xavier Nady wasn’t just a player the Yankee management wanted, the players wanted him on the team as well.
“Oh yeah, there was a lot of talk in here the last few weeks about who was out there and who we might get,” Damon said. “We knew a guy like Nady would be perfect. We knew what our weaknesses were. Lefties were having an easy time with us. And he’s a right-handed hitter who can play a couple of different positions — really a perfect fit for what we needed.”

Xavier Nady Goes Deep For First Time As Yankee

posted by bronxstop
It doesn't really matter much in a blowout like tonight, but Xavier Nady just cracked his first home run (14 this year) and hit as a Yankee in the 7th inning off of Jeremey Guthrie to avoid the shut out against the O's.

As I am writing this Johnny Damon just laced a 3-run shot down the right field line to make it 11-4...a little bit more presentable but we need 8 more runs to make it a good night.

The Ray's lost tonight 3-1 to the Blue Jay's and it is 7-3 Angel's against the Red Sux in the 7th so it would be nice to not lose any ground on a loss tonight.
